Where you can take a degree in Chiang Rai.

Most guides to Chiang Rai name two universities. The better question is which bodies actually award degrees here, and the answer is longer: Mae Fah Luang's 800-hectare hillside campus, Chiang Rai Rajabhat at Ban Du, a weekend-only postgraduate campus of the University of Phayao at Rim Kok, and private Chiang Rai College at Pa O Don Chai — with two of the province's state vocational colleges awarding bachelor's degrees on top of that.

The four degree-granting universities and colleges

These are the four institutions in Chiang Rai province that award their own degrees under their own name. They are not interchangeable, and the difference that matters most is the last column of each card: one of them teaches no undergraduates at all.

The distinction people miss

“Is there a university here” and “can I study here” are different questions

Chiang Rai is usually described as a two-university province, and on a narrow reading that is true: Mae Fah Luang and Chiang Rai Rajabhat are the two universities headquartered here. But a family choosing where to live cares about what is taught within driving distance, and on that measure the province is better supplied than its reputation.

The University of Phayao — a university seated in the next province south — runs a full campus at the Chiang Rai provincial government centre in Tambon Rim Kok. It is easy to miss because its name says Phayao, and because it teaches only at master's and doctoral level, and only at weekends. That combination makes it unusually relevant to an adult who has already moved here for work and wants to study without giving up the job. It is equally important to say the other half plainly: there is no undergraduate intake at the Rim Kok campus.

Chiang Rai College at Pa O Don Chai is a private college, not a university, and it is the province's only private degree-granting institution. It teaches from a Practical Nurse certificate up to a doctorate in Educational Administration, weighted heavily toward health sciences — nursing, Chinese medicine and public health.

Outside the university system

Two vocational colleges here award bachelor's degrees too

Thailand's vocational colleges are widely assumed to stop at the higher vocational certificate. That is not the whole picture in Chiang Rai. The province's state colleges belong to the Institute of Vocational Education, Northern Region 2, and it is the institute — not the individual college — that confers the degree. Its own programme pages record a Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Technology (continuing) taught at Chiang Rai Technical College, and a Bachelor of Technology in Tourism (continuing) taught at Chiang Rai Vocational College. “Continuing” means entry from a higher vocational certificate rather than from school.

One caveat we would rather state than hide: the institute's own programme pages at ivenr2.ac.th returned empty responses to us when we tried to read them in full, so these two programmes are recorded here from the institute's own page titles rather than from a rendered curriculum page. Treat them as real but unconfirmed in detail, and check the intake, the credit load and the timetable with the college directly before you plan a move around one.
