Schools & universities in Nakhon Phanom.

One state university that absorbed the province’s colleges in 2005 and kept all of their functions — eight faculties, six colleges and a demonstration school on its own register, a trade school dating to 1937, a flight school currently grounded and being re-certified, and a Faculty of Medicine now constituted for a 2028 intake. Plus the thing we had previously left open: yes, there are English-medium classrooms here.

What Nakhon Phanom University actually contains — from its own register, not an encyclopaedia

Nakhon Phanom University was established in 2005 by combining the province's existing tertiary institutions: Nakhon Phanom Rajabhat University, Nakhon Phanom Technical College, Nakhon Phanom College of Agriculture and Technology — absorbed on 2 September 2005 — That Phanom and Na Wa vocational colleges, and the Boromarajonani College of Nursing. Unusually among Thailand's newer universities, it CONTINUED the functions of the merged institutions rather than replacing them, so it still teaches at vocational, undergraduate and graduate level inside one organisation. This guide previously reproduced a faculty list taken from an encyclopaedia entry. We have now replaced it with the list the university publishes on its own organisation page, and the two do not match. The university's own register shows eight faculties — Agriculture and Technology, Education, Industrial Technology, MEDICINE, Management Sciences and Information Technology, SCIENCE, ENGINEERING, and Liberal Arts and Sciences — six colleges — Tourism and Service Industry; Aviation, Education and International Research; Srisongkhram Industrial Technology College; That Phanom College; Na Wa College; and the Boromarajonani College of Nursing — plus one demonstration school. The faculties of Education, Science and Engineering are entirely absent from the older list, and so is the school. One more correction to what this page used to say: the university's registered address is 103 Moo 3, Chayangkun Road, tambon Kham Thao, Mueang Nakhon Phanom 48000 — not Nai Mueang, which is the tambon of the town centre and of the provincial hospital.

The trade school is older than the university by 68 years

The Faculty of Industrial Technology is not a 2005 creation with an older name attached. It opened in 1937 as Nakhon Phanom Carpentry School, was renamed Nakhon Phanom Trade School in 1960, was raised to Nakhon Phanom Vocational College on 1 October 1976, took the name Nakhon Phanom Technical College on 31 January 1979, and was folded into the new university in 2005. That is 89 years of continuous trade training in this town, which matters more to a resident than it sounds: it means the local supply of electricians, welders, machinists and builders is trained here rather than imported, and it is the reason a province this size has an industrial-technology faculty at all. The agricultural faculty has a similar depth — it began in 1974 as Nakhon Phanom Agricultural School under the old Department of Vocational Education before its 2005 absorption.

The vocational system did not disappear into the university

It would be easy to read the 2005 merger as the province handing all of its post-secondary training to one university. It did not. Nakhon Phanom province today holds two member colleges of the Institute of Vocational Education, Northeastern Region 2 — Nakhon Phanom Technical College and BAN PHAENG Technical College — alongside Sakon Nakhon Technical College and Nawamintarachinee Mukdahan Technical College. The institute itself is not in this province: it is seated inside Sakon Nakhon Technical College at 219 Nittayo Road, Tambon That Choeng Chum, Mueang Sakon Nakhon, and it was constituted on 27 June 2012 under the Vocational Education Act B.E. 2551. That matters for anyone weighing a technology degree rather than a university one, because the institute — not the individual college — is the body that confers. At its founding it opened five bachelor's programmes, and one of them, Business Computer, was taught at BAN PHAENG Technical College here in Nakhon Phanom. Its current published list of member colleges and their degree subjects, however, shows degree fields only under Sakon Nakhon Technical College and Nawamintarachinee Mukdahan Technical College — so on today's listing, the province's two member colleges are not among those running degrees. One caution worth printing rather than smoothing over: the institute's own history page describes its Nakhon Phanom member as the former Nakhon Phanom College of Technology and Management, 'Nakhon Phanom Technical College today' — a name the pre-2005 college that became the university's Faculty of Industrial Technology also carried. Two different bodies, one name, so check which one you are dealing with before you apply.

The aviation college — renamed, grounded, and being re-certified

This page used to record the International Aviation College as present but uncharacterised. Checked properly, the story is more interesting and considerably more useful. The unit was renamed: on the university's own organisation page it is now the COLLEGE OF AVIATION, EDUCATION AND INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH, formerly the International Aviation College. It was certified as an Approved Training Organization by the then Department of Civil Aviation on 15 October 2007. What it currently teaches, on its own listing, is one degree — a Bachelor of Business Administration in AVIATION MANAGEMENT — and one short course, a Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplane). Commercial pilot training is not currently among them: it stopped during COVID-19, and as of 18 February 2026 the college's dean, Air Chief Marshal Worachat Thareechat, said the college was at phase four of a five-phase re-certification with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand, had submitted its documentation, and expected to sign the licence on the university's founding day, 2 April 2026, and reopen pilot intake in April. Its parked aircraft were being restored to a Certificate of Airworthiness and a Certificate of Registration, with insurance to follow. Lao Airlines and IndiGo were reported to have enquired about training quota, and the indicative full commercial-pilot programme cost quoted was 2.2 million baht including accommodation, food and equipment. WE COULD NOT CONFIRM, at the time of writing, that the licence was signed in April as planned or that pilot intake has resumed, so treat the flight-training side as a plan reported in February 2026 rather than a service you can currently book. UPDATE, five months on: the university's own TCAS69 Round 2 quota admissions for the 2569 academic year — application window 20 March to 15 April 2026, the same window the dean's signing target fell inside — listed the college recruiting 20 seats for exactly one programme, the same Aviation Management BBA (สาขาวิชา การจัดการการบิน), with no separate flight-training or commercial-pilot track added to that round. We found no further public report, in either direction, of the 2 April CAAT signing actually happening. Aviation management itself is running, unaffected by any of this: the university's TCAS 2569 listing shows the programme recruiting for the round listed.

The Faculty of Medicine

On 28 April 2026 the Cabinet approved the establishment of a Faculty of Medicine at Nakhon Phanom University, with a budget of 2,502 million baht over ten years from fiscal 2027 to 2036. The faculty is no longer only a funding decision: it now appears as a faculty in its own right on the university's organisation register, with its own site, alongside the seven older faculties. The university delivers preclinical years one to three; clinical years four to six are taught at the Clinical Medical Education Centre at Nakhon Phanom Hospital, the Ministry of Public Health provincial hospital in tambon Nai Mueang. The same programme upgrades Loei and Yasothon hospitals to clinical medical education centres, so this university becomes the medical school for a three-province group rather than one. The faculty is required to meet Medical Council of Thailand and Institute for Medical Education Accreditation standards, and the curriculum is a Bachelor of Medicine. First intake is the 2028 academic year; the stated target is at least 71 doctors produced for the region by 2036. Nobody is being taught medicine here yet, and the practical effect on the ground begins when the first cohort reaches the clinical years in the early 2030s — but the institution exists now, which is a different thing from an announcement.

English-medium classrooms — what we found on re-checking

This page previously said we could not verify whether any school here teaches in English, and left it as a question to answer locally. That was our gap, not the province's, and it has now closed. PIYAMAHARAJALAI SCHOOL, the provincial secondary school on Piyamaharajalai Road in tambon Nai Mueang, runs roughly 2,400 pupils across M.1 to M.6 and operates several special-classroom streams alongside its ordinary programme: a MINI ENGLISH PROGRAMME teaching maths and science in English at both lower and upper secondary, an EDUCATION HUB stream at lower secondary, a science-maths-technology-and-environment stream, a science and technology excellence stream, and a language stream at upper secondary. It runs its own online admissions system. Published indicative termly fees, from a schools guide rather than the school's own fee notice, put the ordinary classroom near 2,300 baht, the Mini English Programme near 17,800 baht at lower secondary and 20,300 at upper, the Education Hub stream near 18,800, and the science streams between roughly 6,300 and 8,300 — confirm every figure with the school, because fee schedules change annually and these are not first-party numbers. Separately, the university runs its own basic-education school: PHANOM PHITTAYAPHAT, the Demonstration School of Nakhon Phanom University, at 167 Moo 8, tambon Na Ratchakhwai in Mueang district, which lists teaching from kindergarten through secondary. Between the two, a foreign family here has a Thai-medium mainstream, an English-medium stream inside the mainstream, and a university-run school — which is not an international curriculum, but is not nothing either.

International schools — still none found, and here is exactly what that means

We have not found an international-curriculum school in Nakhon Phanom province, and we are still going to be careful about how that is stated. Our searches this run again surfaced none, and the province does not appear in the national province-by-province listings of international schools that we checked. That is stronger than the 'unverified' we recorded before, but it is not the same as a first-party register saying so, and we will not upgrade it further than the evidence goes. What has changed is that we can now bound the alternative rather than leaving you to guess. The nearest school we have verified anywhere in this series is UDON THANI INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, several hours' drive west, which our earlier research recorded as running to Year 11 rather than to Year 13 — meaning that even the nearest option does not carry a child through to a school-leaving qualification on site. We have not re-fetched that school's own page this run, so treat the bound as reported rather than freshly checked, and verify directly if it matters. If an international curriculum through to Year 13 is a requirement for your family, Nakhon Phanom is not the province for it, and that is a decision to make before you sign a lease rather than after.

Thai schooling, the register to use, and the language your child will actually hear

Beyond the university and the two schools named above we have not audited individual Thai state or private schools here, and rather than list names we have not checked, we will point you at the register instead: the Secondary Educational Service Area Office Nakhon Phanom publishes the announcements and school listings for the province's state secondary schools, and it is the correct first stop for anyone comparing English Programme or bilingual streams beyond Piyamaharajalai. The administrative frame is 12 districts, 97 subdistricts and 1,040 villages, with one town municipality and 21 subdistrict municipalities. The second question is linguistic and nobody warns foreign parents about it. This province was settled by Lao people and belonged to the Lan Xang kingdom; after it came under Ayutthaya's control the population remained predominantly Lao-speaking, and substantially still is. Central Thai is the language of the classroom; Isan, closely related to Lao, is the language of the playground and the street. For a child that is an advantage rather than a complication — they end up functionally bilingual in a way a child in a Bangkok international school will not — but it does mean that 'learning Thai' here means learning two registers, and that the Lao town of Thakhek across the bridge will feel like a neighbouring district rather than a foreign country.

FAQ

Nakhon Phanom schools FAQ

Is there a university in Nakhon Phanom?

Yes, and it is an unusual one. Nakhon Phanom University was established in 2005 by combining the province's existing tertiary institutions — the Rajabhat university, the technical college, the college of agriculture and technology (absorbed on 2 September 2005), the That Phanom and Na Wa vocational colleges and the Boromarajonani College of Nursing — and unlike most new Thai universities it continued their existing functions rather than replacing them, so it still teaches at vocational, undergraduate and graduate level. Its own organisation register lists eight faculties (Agriculture and Technology, Education, Industrial Technology, Medicine, Management Sciences and Information Technology, Science, Engineering, Liberal Arts and Sciences), six colleges (Tourism and Service Industry; Aviation, Education and International Research; Srisongkhram Industrial Technology; That Phanom; Na Wa; and the nursing college) and one demonstration school. Its registered address is 103 Moo 3, Chayangkun Road, tambon Kham Thao, Mueang Nakhon Phanom 48000. Student numbers are not published on the sources we read, so we publish none.

Is there an English-medium school in Nakhon Phanom?

Yes — which is not the same as an international school, and we had this wrong before. Piyamaharajalai School, the provincial secondary school in tambon Nai Mueang, runs a Mini English Programme teaching maths and science in English at both lower and upper secondary, and an Education Hub special-classroom stream at lower secondary, alongside science, technology and language streams and its ordinary programme. It has around 2,400 pupils across M.1 to M.6 and its own online admissions system. Indicative termly fees reported by a schools guide — not by the school — put the Mini English Programme near 17,800 baht at lower secondary and 20,300 at upper, and the Education Hub stream near 18,800, against roughly 2,300 for the ordinary classroom; treat all of those as approximate and confirm with the school. Nakhon Phanom University also runs its own basic-education school, Phanom Phittayaphat, at tambon Na Ratchakhwai in Mueang district, listing kindergarten through secondary.

Is there an international school in Nakhon Phanom?

We have not found one. Our searches this run surfaced none, and the province does not appear in the national province-by-province listings of international schools that we checked — which is stronger than the 'we did not look properly' we recorded before, but still short of a first-party register stating an absence, so we will not claim more than that. What we can now do is bound the alternative: the nearest school we have verified anywhere in this series is Udon Thani International School, several hours' drive west, which our earlier research recorded as running to Year 11 rather than Year 13 — so even the nearest option does not carry a child to a school-leaving qualification on site. We have not re-fetched that school's own page this run. If an international curriculum through to Year 13 is a requirement, this is not the province for it, and that is a decision to make before signing a lease.

Can I learn to fly at Nakhon Phanom University?

Not right now, on the evidence we could find. The unit is the College of Aviation, Education and International Research — renamed from the International Aviation College — and it was certified as an Approved Training Organization by the then Department of Civil Aviation on 15 October 2007. What its own listing currently shows is a Bachelor of Business Administration in Aviation Management and a short Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplane) course. Commercial pilot training stopped during COVID-19. On 18 February 2026 the dean, Air Chief Marshal Worachat Thareechat, said the college had reached phase four of a five-phase re-certification with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand, had submitted its documents, and expected to sign the licence on the university's founding day, 2 April 2026, with pilot intake reopening that month; its parked aircraft were being restored to airworthiness and registration, Lao Airlines and IndiGo had enquired about quota, and the indicative full commercial-pilot course cost quoted was 2.2 million baht. We could not confirm that the licence was signed or that intake resumed, so contact the college directly before making any plan that depends on it.

Did the 2005 merger leave the province with only one place to study?

No. Two colleges of the Institute of Vocational Education, Northeastern Region 2 sit in Nakhon Phanom province — Nakhon Phanom Technical College and Ban Phaeng Technical College — alongside Sakon Nakhon Technical College and Nawamintarachinee Mukdahan Technical College. The institute was constituted on 27 June 2012 and is seated inside Sakon Nakhon Technical College at 219 Nittayo Road in Mueang Sakon Nakhon, so the body that confers the technology degree is not in this province. At its founding the institute opened five bachelor's programmes, one of them Business Computer at Ban Phaeng Technical College here; its current listing of member colleges and degree subjects, however, shows degree fields only under the Sakon Nakhon and Mukdahan colleges. One name to be careful with: the institute describes its Nakhon Phanom member as the former Nakhon Phanom College of Technology and Management, now called Nakhon Phanom Technical College — the same name the pre-2005 college that became the university's Faculty of Industrial Technology carried. Two bodies, one name.

Will my child learn Thai or Lao here?

Central Thai in the classroom, Isan — which is closely related to Lao — in the playground and on the street. This province was settled by Lao people and belonged to the Lan Xang kingdom; after it came under the control of Ayutthaya the population remained predominantly Lao-speaking, and it substantially still is, which is why the cuisine is closer to Laos than to Bangkok and why the Lao town of Thakhek across the bridge feels less like a foreign country than a neighbouring district. For a child that is an advantage rather than a complication: they will end up functionally bilingual in a way a child in a Bangkok international school will not. The practical question for a foreign parent is not which language but which stream, and Piyamaharajalai's Mini English Programme and Education Hub classrooms are the realistic middle path between a fully Thai-medium state school and relocating for an international curriculum. For anything beyond that school, the Secondary Educational Service Area Office Nakhon Phanom is the register to work from.
