Healthcare in Phatthalung.

A provincial general hospital with its own cardiac cath lab and a 17-bed CCU, a registered private hospital in the same subdistrict, the standard district network — and a university teaching hospital under two hours south in Hat Yai.

Phatthalung's healthcare picture is best read as two layers, one inside the province and one just outside it. Inside: Phatthalung Hospital in the provincial town carries the serious work, backed by the Ministry of Public Health's community hospitals in the districts and its health-promoting hospitals in the subdistricts. That covers ordinary life and most emergencies competently, and it does not include a resident specialist bench or a large private international-standard facility. Outside: Hat Yai is roughly a hundred kilometres south and under two hours away by road or rail, with a university teaching hospital and several major private hospitals. For a rural province, that second layer changes the calculation entirely.

Hospitals

The main facilities

Phatthalung Hospital

Public · provincial general hospital · 421 Ramet Road, Khuha Sawan

The province's main hospital, at 421 Ramet Road in Khuha Sawan subdistrict on 074 609 500, and the facility that carries every serious case in Phatthalung — emergency, surgical and inpatient work for eleven districts and a registered population of 519,440. A 298-bed rehabilitation building was completed there in February 2020 after a three-year construction programme. BAANLYY still has not verified a current total bed count, and this revision says exactly why rather than leaving the gap unexplained: the hospital's own pages at ptlhosp.moph.go.th and the third-party facility directories that carry Thai bed counts both returned nothing readable to our tooling on this pass, and a figure that only exists inside a search-engine summary is not a figure we will print. Two different totals are circulating for this hospital and we are publishing neither until one can be read at source. Confirm capacity and international-patient support with the hospital directly. What matters more than the bed count, and what this page previously missed entirely, is what the hospital can actually do — see the cardiovascular centre below. Being within reach of it is the strongest healthcare argument for living in the town or at Lam Pam.

The Cardiovascular Centre at Phatthalung Hospital

Public · cardiac catheterisation · read this if you have a heart condition

This is the single most consequential fact about healthcare in Phatthalung and it was absent from this page. The hospital operates a cardiovascular centre — a joint undertaking between Phatthalung Hospital and Thonburi Sermrath Co., Ltd., which contracts in the specialist staffing and quality control — with a 17-bed coronary care unit and one cardiac catheterisation laboratory, reached on 074-609-500 extension 1501-2 or 062-792-6677 at the same 421 Ramet Road address. It opened on 17 April 2018 and was approved by the National Health Security Office on 1 October 2018 to treat patients under universal coverage, which means it is not a private annexe bolted onto a public hospital but part of the state entitlement. The practical consequence is large: a cardiac event is the most common emergency in which the two-hour run to Hat Yai would be the difference, and for that specific category the province no longer requires it. Confirm current on-call cover and your own insurance position with the centre — a cath lab is a service, not a guarantee of a 24-hour interventional rota, and we have not verified the rota.

The district community hospitals

Public · community

Below the provincial hospital, the Ministry of Public Health's standard structure places a community hospital in each district — Khuan Khanun, Khao Chaison, Pak Phayun, Tamot, Pa Bon, Bang Kaeo, Kong Ra, Si Banphot, Pa Phayom and Srinagarindra. These handle primary care, routine outpatient work, maternity and stabilisation, and refer upward to Phatthalung Hospital for anything complex. BAANLYY has not verified individual bed counts for these facilities and will not publish estimates. What matters practically is measured drive time from wherever you are considering living, and that is worth checking yourself rather than assuming.

Subdistrict health-promoting hospitals

Public · primary care

Beneath the district hospitals sits the tambon health-promoting hospital network, spread across the province's 65 subdistricts. These are the everyday layer: vaccinations, chronic-disease follow-up, minor treatment and referral. They are the reason rural Thailand is better covered for routine care than a hospital count alone suggests, and they are not a substitute for a hospital in an emergency.

Piyarak Hospital & the private layer

Private · Mueang Phatthalung

This page previously said BAANLYY had not verified a private hospital anywhere in Phatthalung and that private inpatient care meant leaving the province. The first half was a gap in our research, not a fact about the province. Piyarak Hospital is a registered private hospital at 74 Aphaiborirak Road, Khuha Sawan, Mueang Phatthalung 93000, operated by Piyarak Hospital Co., Ltd. and listed as open around the clock; published contact numbers include 074-627146 and 074-615406. Be precise about what that does and does not mean, because the difference matters when you are choosing where to live. We have not verified its bed count, its inpatient or surgical scope, or any international-patient service, and we are not claiming it is an international-standard facility — no facility in Phatthalung is. That card stayed open on this revision too, and again the reason is worth stating: the Ministry of Public Health facility register that would settle it, and the Thai hospital directories that mirror it, would not open for us here. What did resolve is the corporate identity behind the hospital — it is operated by Piyarak Hospital Co., Ltd., Thai juristic person number 0935537000158, which is a Phatthalung-registered company rather than a branch of a national chain. What we can now say honestly is that the province has a private hospital rather than only clinics, that it is in the same subdistrict as the provincial hospital, and that for anything genuinely complex the referral is still Hat Yai. Alongside it the town carries the usual private clinics and pharmacies for routine outpatient work and shorter waits.

Hat Yai — the referral destination

Out of province · roughly 100km

This is the part of the picture that makes Phatthalung more comfortable than its own hospital list suggests. Roughly a hundred kilometres south, and under two hours by road or rail, Hat Yai holds Songklanagarind Hospital — Prince of Songkla University's teaching hospital and one of the major tertiary medical centres in southern Thailand — alongside a cluster of large private hospitals. Hat Yai also has an international airport for anything requiring Bangkok. Living two hours from a university medical centre is a materially better position than most rural Thai provinces are in, and anyone with a specialist condition should treat that journey as a planned part of living here rather than an emergency backstop.

FAQ

Healthcare questions

Is healthcare good in Phatthalung?

Stronger than a province this size has any right to be, and stronger than this page used to say. Phatthalung Hospital at 421 Ramet Road handles the province's emergency, surgical and inpatient load, and the Ministry of Public Health's district and subdistrict network covers routine care across the eleven districts. Crucially, the hospital also runs a cardiovascular centre with a 17-bed coronary care unit and a cardiac catheterisation laboratory, open since April 2018 and approved for universal-coverage patients since that October — so the claim that the province has no resident specialist capability at all is wrong, and we have removed it. The province does still lack an international-standard private hospital; it has a registered private one, Piyarak Hospital, whose scope we have not verified. And Hat Yai remains roughly a hundred kilometres south, with a university teaching hospital and several major private hospitals, under two hours by road or rail. For a rural province, that is a strong position.

Which hospital should foreigners use in Phatthalung?

Phatthalung Hospital at 421 Ramet Road for anything serious in the province, and specifically its cardiovascular centre for cardiac work — that is the one specialism you do not need to leave the province for. Piyarak Hospital on Aphaiborirak Road is the private option in town, though we have not verified its inpatient scope. Private clinics handle routine outpatient care with shorter waits, and the district community hospitals and subdistrict health-promoting hospitals are fine for primary care if you live outside the capital. For other specialisms, plan on Hat Yai. English is limited across the board in the province; bring a Thai-speaking friend or a translation app to any appointment, and carry your insurance details in Thai as well as English.

Do I need health insurance in Phatthalung?

Strongly recommended, as everywhere in Thailand. Public hospital care is affordable but busy, and the realistic path for serious treatment runs out of the province to Hat Yai, where a referral to a private facility raises the out-of-pocket cost quickly. Some long-stay visas also require proof of health insurance. Check specifically what your policy covers for treatment outside your home province, and for medical transport, before you need it.

How far is specialist care from Phatthalung?

Roughly a hundred kilometres and under two hours, which is the single best thing about healthcare here. Hat Yai holds Songklanagarind Hospital, Prince of Songkla University's teaching hospital, and a cluster of large private hospitals, and it is reachable by road or by train from the station in the middle of Phatthalung town. Bangkok is a further step, either by sleeper from the same station or by air from Hat Yai International. Neither is a short trip, but neither is a day-long expedition either.

What should I check before choosing a district to live in?

Measured drive time to Phatthalung Hospital, not estimated. The province is eleven districts across 3,861 square kilometres and the geography runs long north to south between the mountains and the lake, so a house that looks close on a map can be forty minutes from the provincial hospital in practice — and longer in the October-to-March wet season, when the low ground and the rice plain flood. If anyone in the household has a condition that could need urgent care, drive the route once, in the rain, before signing anything.
