Schools & universities in Roi Et.

An authorised IB World School inside the provincial town — which neither neighbouring province has — plus two state secondaries running an English Programme, a World-Class Standard School out at Selaphum, and a degree-awarding layer that runs through a Rajabhat, a technology campus, both national Buddhist universities, a Ministry of Culture dramatic-arts college and a vocational institute.

Share

The headline, and it is a correction: Roi Et's degree-awarding layer sits under four different national authorities, and this page was only counting one of them. The schools picture was sound — Silver Fern International School on Airport Road is an authorised IB World School, and two state secondaries run an English Programme. The higher-education picture was not. Asking "which universities are here" produced a list of three; asking "what awards a bachelor's degree here" produces a longer one, because a Ministry of Culture institute confers degrees at the College of Dramatic Arts inside the town, a vocational institute administered from Maha Sarakham confers them at three Roi Et colleges, and both of Thailand's national Buddhist universities hold sites in this province rather than the one this page named. Degree study happens in three Roi Et districts, not two. Separately, and less comfortably: we have withdrawn a set of international-school fee figures that three surfaces on this hub carried with two different stories about where they came from.

Education is a large part of why Roi Et ranks tenth of seventy-seven on the 2022 Human Achievement Index, a composite covering health, education, employment and income. In August 2026 we filled in the state secondary tier this guide used to leave blank, naming Roi Et Wittayalai, Strisuksa and Selaphum Phittayakhom from their own websites; two of the three run an English Programme, which an earlier version of this page said it could not confirm. In September 2026 we went back to the higher-education half and found the same failure one tier up. The page listed the institutions a Thai university directory would list, and a Thai university directory only lists institutions under the higher-education ministry. Roi Et's degree-awarding layer also runs through the Ministry of Culture, through the Office of the Vocational Education Commission, and through the ecclesiastical universities — three routes a directory search does not return. The cards below are organised around what actually confers a degree in this province rather than around what calls itself a university, and where an institution sits outside Roi Et while awarding degrees earned inside it, that is said in as many words.

The institutions

What's actually here

Silver Fern International School

16 Moo 21, Airport Road, Nuea Mueang · an authorised IB World School

This is the fact that separates Roi Et from every province around it. Silver Fern International School is an authorised IB World School running the Primary Years Programme, and — in its own current wording — a candidate school for the Middle Years Programme, pursuing authorisation. Its address on its own site is 16 Moo 21, Airport Road, Tambon Nuea Mueang, Amphoe Mueang, Roi Et 45000, and the contact number it publishes is (+66) 099 467 1222. It teaches in English with Thai and Chinese as additional languages, and draws on Cambridge IGCSE frameworks and the Thai Ministry curriculum alongside the IB; its published Middle Years subject list runs language and literature, mathematics, sciences, language acquisition, Thai language, Chinese language, Thai history and culture, individuals and societies, music, art, physical and health education, design and ICT, with a Personal Project and community service built in. It is co-educational, takes children from early years, and offers day and boarding places — boarding from PYP 4 onward, in small family-style houses close to the school. One practical warning, because it cost us time and will cost you some: there are two Silver Fern domains, and the short one is a fossil. The live school site is silverferninternationalschool.com, carrying a 2024 copyright and the address above; silverfern.school is an abandoned earlier site whose most recent calendar entry is a parent evening in March 2018. Do not read the dead one as evidence the school has closed. On fees, this page has withdrawn a set of figures it used to print, and the reason is worth stating plainly because the fault was ours. Silver Fern does not publish a fee schedule on its own site; the numbers we carried for 2025/26 came from a third-party international-schools directory. That was disclosed in this card — but the FAQ further down this same page, and the cost-of-living page on this hub, both attributed the identical figures to the school itself. Three surfaces, one set of numbers, two different stories about where they came from, and nobody had checked. BAANLYY's standing rule is that we do not publish per-school fee figures that change annually, precisely because a stale number quoted with false authority is worse than no number: a family budgets on it. So the schedule is gone and what replaces it is the shape of the decision rather than its price. Expect an authorised IB programme in a small Isaan municipality to cost a multiple of a Thai state English Programme and a fraction of a Bangkok or Phuket international school, expect application, registration and deposit charges on top of tuition, expect a sibling discount, and expect boarding to be quoted on enquiry rather than listed. Ask the school for its current schedule in writing before you commit to anything.

Roi Et Rajabhat University

Ko Kaeo, Selaphum district · established 2001

Roi Et Rajabhat University is the province's main public higher-education institution, established in 2001 and recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation. It sits out at Ko Kaeo in Selaphum district rather than in the provincial town, which matters practically: the student rental market around the campus is a distinct cluster from the one in Mueang Roi Et, and it is the cheapest formal housing in the province, with blocks quoting from around 1,500 baht a month in our August 2026 portal check. It is a coeducational institution offering undergraduate and graduate programmes with the usual Rajabhat spread across education, sciences, humanities and management.

Roi Et College of Dramatic Arts

25 Kong Phon Sip Road, Nai Mueang · Bunditpatanasilpa Institute, Ministry of Culture

The degree awarder this page missed — and it is the one inside the provincial town. วิทยาลัยนาฏศิลปร้อยเอ็ด, the Roi Et College of Dramatic Arts, is one of the regional dramatic-arts colleges that grew out of the Fine Arts Department's art-education division and now sit under the Bunditpatanasilpa Institute: a degree-conferring institution of the Ministry of Culture rather than of the higher-education ministry. That is exactly why it is absent from the usual Thai university lists, and it is why an earlier version of this page could describe the province's higher education as a Rajabhat, a Buddhist campus and a technology campus and believe the list was complete. It teaches to bachelor's level — a four-year ศึกษาศาสตรบัณฑิต, a Bachelor of Education, in Dance Education (นาฏศิลปศึกษา) and in Music Education (ดนตรีศึกษา) — alongside secondary-level study in the same subjects. Its address is 25 Kong Phon Sip Road, Tambon Nai Mueang, Amphoe Mueang Roi Et: inside the municipality, not out at Ko Kaeo. Its published academic output is emphatically local rather than generic-conservatoire — khaen and pi technique, pong lang ensemble practice, mo lam repertoire and Isan folk notation — which makes it the province's main formal custodian of the music Roi Et is actually known for. Two honest limits: we did not establish its founding year to a standard we would publish, and for a relocating family this is not a schooling option. The reason it belongs here is narrower and more useful than that. It moves the answer to 'is there degree-level study in the town itself, as opposed to out in the districts' from no to yes.

Roi Et Buddhist College (Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University)

252 Moo 4, Tambon Niwet, Thawat Buri · the other national Buddhist university

The card below this one calls Mahamakut 'one of Thailand's two national Buddhist universities'. Both of them are here, and the phrasing hid the second as effectively as leaving it out would have. Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University — MCU — runs วิทยาลัยสงฆ์ร้อยเอ็ด, the Roi Et Buddhist College, at 252 Moo 4, Ban Tha Yiam, Tambon Niwet, Amphoe Thawat Buri 45170. Its own history page traces the route: teaching began in the town at Wat Burapha Phiram; the university approved a Roi Et classroom-expansion project there on 27 August 1999, which the college still commemorates as its founding date; it moved in 2004 to Wat Sa Thong on Hai Sok Road — the same temple in whose grounds Roi Et Wittayalai School was founded in 1907, a connection this hub already carried on another card without anyone joining the two; and in 2010 it built its own site on public grazing land at Don Daeng in Thawat Buri. It was raised to a classroom of MCU's Khon Kaen campus in 2011 and approved from that year to admit lay students, not only monks and novices, at bachelor's level; it became a college in its own right in 2015 and added postgraduate work in 2017. It currently lists four bachelor's degrees — Buddhist Studies, Public Administration, Political Science and Education — and three master's. One internal conflict in the source, printed rather than smoothed over: the same history page that dates the founding to 1999 also dates first teaching to the 2008 academic year, with an intake of 49 monks and novices. The practical consequence for this hub is that Thawat Buri — the airport district — is a third Roi Et district with a degree site, which this page previously did not count.

Mahamakut Buddhist University, Roi Et campus

Mueang Roi Et · monastic and lay higher education

Mahamakut Buddhist University maintains a campus in Roi Et. It is the second of Thailand's two national Buddhist universities to hold a site in this province — see the MCU card above, which an earlier version of this page did not carry. It is a visible enough presence in the local rental market to register on the portals as a demand anchor in its own right — the second-largest of the three education anchors we could identify around Mueang Roi Et, after the industrial and community education college. For most relocating families it is not a schooling option, but it is part of why the town has a student population and the apartment stock that goes with one.

RMUTI Roi Et campus

Thung Kula Ronghai · technology university, southern plain

Rajamangala University of Technology Isan operates a Roi Et campus at Thung Kula Ronghai, on the southern rice plain — a separate institution from the Rajabhat, and one worth distinguishing because the two are routinely confused in directory listings and in conversation. It gives the province an applied and technology layer at university level that does not depend on Roi Et Rajabhat.

The vocational degree layer — IVEC Northeastern Region 3

Three Roi Et colleges · the institute confers, the college teaches

This is the layer most likely to be undercounted anywhere in Thailand, because the degree is not awarded by the institution whose name is on the gate. Roi Et Technical College (วิทยาลัยเทคนิคร้อยเอ็ด), Roi Et Vocational College (วิทยาลัยอาชีวศึกษาร้อยเอ็ด) and Roi Et Industrial and Community Education College (วิทยาลัยการอาชีพร้อยเอ็ด) are all constituent colleges of the Institute of Vocational Education: Northeastern Region 3, and it is the institute — not the individual college — that confers the เทคโนโลยีบัณฑิต, the Bachelor of Technology. The institute covers the four-province Roi-Kaen-Sara-Sin cluster: Roi Et, Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham and Kalasin, the 'Roi' in that cluster name being this province. Its office, though, sits at Maha Sarakham Technical College, one province west — so the body that awards the degrees a Roi Et student earns is administered from outside Roi Et. Two addresses worth having, both in Mueang Roi Et: Roi Et Technical College is on Thewaphiban Road, the same road as Roi Et Wittayalai School at 275/14, which this page already names — the province's flagship state secondary and its technical college are neighbours, and no page on this hub had noticed. Roi Et Industrial and Community Education College is at 177 Ronnachai Chanyut Road, Tambon Nai Mueang, Roi Et 45000, telephone 0-4351-3862; on the portal data it is the single largest driver of student rental demand in the town. One honest limit, and it is the one this kind of card usually gets wrong: membership of a degree-conferring institute is a permission, not a programme. We have confirmed that Roi Et Technical College teaches to Bachelor of Technology level. We have not established which specific programmes the institute currently sites at each of the three colleges, and this page does not guess at them.

Ramkhamhaeng University

No regional campus here · but an examination centre

Ramkhamhaeng runs two different regional networks and they do not cover the same provinces, so it is worth being exact about which one Roi Et has — the distinction decides whether a distance student can stay put. Roi Et does not have a สาขาวิทยบริการเฉลิมพระเกียรติ, one of Ramkhamhaeng's regional campuses. Roi Et does appear in the university's regional examination-centre network, which Ramkhamhaeng describes as 41 centres across 39 provinces, and for a distance student that is the network that matters: it means you can register for a Ramkhamhaeng bachelor's degree and sit the examinations in this province rather than travelling to Bangkok or to a campus province for every sitting. We were not able to confirm, from Ramkhamhaeng's own current published list, which venue in Roi Et hosts the centre, and we are not willing to name a school on the strength of a third-party directory — check the university's own examination announcement for the term you register in.

Roi Et Wittayalai School

275/14 Thewaphiban Road, Nai Mueang · English Programme since 2010

The province's flagship state secondary, founded in 1907 in the grounds of what is now Wat Sa Thong and given its present name in 1914. It is classified an extra-large secondary school, and it has taken the national Royal Award in that category four times — 1980, 1986, 1996 and 2010. Its own history page is what settles the question this guide previously left open: it opened a Gifted Program at lower and upper secondary in 2004, a Chinese-language classroom in 2009, an English Programme in 2010, entered the Ministry's World-Class Standard School track in 2012, and added a linguistics gifted stream at upper secondary in 2013. Address 275/14 Thewaphiban Road, Tambon Nai Mueang, Mueang Roi Et 45000; telephone 043-511-795; school@rw.ac.th. This is a Thai-medium school with an English-medium stream inside it, not an international school — the distinction matters for a family weighing it against Silver Fern — but it is a real English Programme, it is fifteen years old, and it is a ten-minute drive from most of the town municipality.

Strisuksa School

149 Suriyadet Bamrung Road, Nai Mueang · four special-classroom streams

The town's second large state secondary, and the second in the province running an English Programme. Strisuksa operates four special-classroom projects — EP (English Programme), GPS, GPLS and CP — each with its own dedicated page and its own admissions route, and it ran a combined online application system for M1 and M4 entry to all four for the 2569 (2026) academic year, announced on its own site in April 2026. Address 149 Suriyadet Bamrung Road, Tambon Nai Mueang, Mueang Roi Et 45000; public-relations line 043 511 410, secretariat and administration 043 511 202. Its academic office publishes the special-classroom timetable each year; entry to these streams is by examination and the intake is small, so a family arriving mid-year should expect to wait for the February round rather than transfer in.

Selaphum Phittayakhom School

99 Moo 1, Khwan Mueang, Selaphum · World-Class Standard School

If you are looking at the cheaper campus belt north of the capital rather than the town, this is the secondary school that serves it — and it is not a fallback. Selaphum Phittayakhom is a Ministry World-Class Standard School and a designated subdistrict quality school, runs the Science Power Ten (Withayasat Phalang Sip) programme, has held its Sepit Math Contest for twenty-three years, and puts its students through CEFR-framed English testing at M1 to M6 through its FLD SPK activity. Address 99 Moo 1, Tambon Khwan Mueang, Amphoe Selaphum, Roi Et 45120; telephone and fax 043-551-396; admissions run online at reg.sapit.ac.th. One trap worth naming: Selaphum district also contains a separate, differently governed school called simply Selaphum School, on its own domain. They are two institutions, not one, and directory listings conflate them.

The rest of the state system

20 districts, 193 subdistricts, 2,311 villages · honest scope

Below the four schools above, Roi Et runs the standard Thai government system across twenty districts, 193 subdistricts and 2,311 villages under the Office of the Basic Education Commission, plus the vocational track in the town. BAANLYY has verified the three state secondaries named on this page directly against each school's own website, and has not attempted a school-by-school survey of the primary tier or of the outer districts — that remains a limit of our coverage rather than a statement about the province. What we will no longer say, because it was wrong, is that no English Programme could be confirmed here: two of the three verified secondaries run one.

FAQ

Education questions

Is there an international school in Roi Et?

Yes — and this is genuinely unusual for an Isaan province outside the big four. Silver Fern International School on Airport Road in the provincial town is an authorised IB World School delivering the Primary Years Programme, and a candidate school for the Middle Years Programme. It teaches in English with Thai and Chinese alongside, uses Cambridge IGCSE frameworks and the Thai Ministry curriculum in the mix, and offers both day and boarding places, with boarding from PYP 4 in small family-style houses. For comparison: neither Surin nor Sisaket, both of which Roi Et borders, has an international-curriculum school anywhere inside the province. If you are relocating to central Isaan with school-age children, this is probably the most decisive single fact on the entire hub.

What does the international school in Roi Et cost?

Ask the school — and we have removed the figures this answer used to give you, because they were misattributed here. Silver Fern does not publish a fee schedule on its own website. The numbers this hub carried came from a third-party international-schools directory; the card above disclosed that, but this answer and the cost-of-living page both said 'the school published' them, which was not true. Rather than repair the attribution we have withdrawn the schedule, in line with BAANLYY's standing rule against publishing per-school fees that change every year — a stale number carrying false authority is worse than no number, because a family budgets on it. What we will say is the shape: an authorised IB programme in a small Isaan municipality will cost a substantial multiple of a Thai state English Programme and a clear fraction of an equivalent Bangkok or Phuket international school; expect application, registration and deposit charges on top of tuition; expect a sibling discount; and expect boarding to be quoted on enquiry rather than listed. Get the current schedule from the school in writing.

Which universities are in Roi Et?

More than this page used to say, and they sit under four different national authorities — which is exactly why an earlier version undercounted them. Roi Et Rajabhat University, established in 2001, is the main public university, out at Ko Kaeo in Selaphum district rather than in the provincial town. Rajamangala University of Technology Isan runs a Roi Et campus at Thung Kula Ronghai on the southern plain; RMUTI and the Rajabhat are separate institutions and are frequently confused. Both national Buddhist universities hold sites here, not one: Mahamakut in Mueang Roi Et, and Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya through the Roi Et Buddhist College at Tambon Niwet in Thawat Buri. The Roi Et College of Dramatic Arts, at 25 Kong Phon Sip Road in the town itself, awards a four-year Bachelor of Education in dance and music under the Bunditpatanasilpa Institute — a Ministry of Culture body, which is why it is missing from most Thai university lists. And three vocational colleges in the province are constituent members of the Institute of Vocational Education: Northeastern Region 3, which confers a Bachelor of Technology on their behalf from its office in Maha Sarakham. Ramkhamhaeng has no regional campus here but does run an examination centre in the province. The right question in a province like this is not 'which universities are here' but 'what awards a bachelor's degree here' — the two produce different lists, and the second one is longer.

Are there good Thai schools in Roi Et?

Yes, and we can now name them. Roi Et Wittayalai on Thewaphiban Road is the province's flagship state secondary — founded 1907, classified extra-large, and a four-time winner of the national Royal Award for its category. Strisuksa on Suriyadet Bamrung Road is the town's second large secondary and runs four special-classroom streams. Selaphum Phittayakhom, at 99 Moo 1 in Khwan Mueang, is a Ministry World-Class Standard School serving the campus belt north of the capital. All three publish their own websites, and everything on this page about them is taken from those sites rather than from a directory. Below that tier the province runs the standard system across twenty districts, 193 subdistricts and 2,311 villages, which we have not surveyed school by school — Roi Et's tenth-of-seventy-seven ranking on the 2022 Human Achievement Index, a composite covering education alongside health, employment and income, is the best general signal we have for the rest.

Is there an English Programme in a Thai state school in Roi Et?

Yes — in two of them, and an earlier version of this page wrongly said we could not confirm one. Roi Et Wittayalai opened an English Programme in 2010, recorded on the school's own history page alongside its Gifted Program from 2004 and its Chinese-language classroom from 2009. Strisuksa runs an EP stream as one of four special-classroom projects (EP, GPS, GPLS and CP), each with its own page and its own admissions route, and it ran a combined online application for M1 and M4 entry to all four for the 2569 academic year. Selaphum Phittayakhom does not advertise a full EP but does put M1 to M6 students through CEFR-framed English testing. An EP is a stream inside a Thai-medium school: fees are a fraction of an international school's, class sizes are larger, and the non-English subjects are still taught in Thai. For a child who will sit Thai national exams it is often the better fit; for a child who will move on to a foreign system, Silver Fern is the one to look at.

Would you move to Roi Et with children?

It is one of the more defensible choices in Isaan for a family, which is not something we say about most provinces at this tier. You get an authorised IB World School with published fees inside the municipality, an 879-bed regional hospital that trains doctors five minutes away, a daily jet to Bangkok from an airport just north of town, and a cost base among the lowest in the country. Against that: there is no railway anywhere in the province, no verified condominium stock, no organised foreign community, and the nearest city-scale amenity is Khon Kaen about 113 kilometres northwest. The realistic shape of family life here is a car, a house or townhouse in or near the municipality, and the school run on Airport Road.
