Schools & universities in Sakon Nakhon.

The province's flagship state secondary school and the one genuinely English-medium route in Sakon Nakhon. Its own history records the school being approved in 2012 (B.E. 2555) to run the Ministry of Education curriculum in English — an English Program — starting with a single Mathayom 1 class, and approved again in 2014 (B.E. 2557) for a Mini English Program at Mathayom 4, which opened in the 2015 academic year. The school traces its foundation to 23 January 1912, joined the World-Class Standard School programme in 2010, and holds OBEC's ScQA and OBECQA quality awards. This is a Thai state school with English-medium streams, not an international school — but for a family that wants English-taught subjects without leaving the province, it is the real answer.

The city's other large state secondary school, at 606 Highway 22 in That Choeng Chum sub-district on roughly 30 rai, under the Sakon Nakhon Secondary Educational Service Area Office. Thai-medium, and the practical alternative catchment for families living along the Highway 22 corridor east of the centre.

SNRU's own demonstration school in Mueang Sakon Nakhon — the university-attached (satit) route that Thai families in the city aim for, taught in Thai with the university's education faculty behind it.

The province's largest higher-education institution, on the western side of the city, strong in education, humanities, science and applied fields — including Business English, Academic English and English Education degree tracks. SNRU anchors the local student population and drives much of the city's rental market and café culture.

Established 15 August 1996 out on the northern lakeshore at Chiang Khruea, this regional Kasetsart campus covers agriculture, science, engineering and public health — the Faculty of Public Health at Chalermphrakiat Sakon Nakhon Province Campus is based here. Kasetsart's medical school is in Bangkok, but since 2024 it teaches its students at Sakon Nakhon Hospital, which gives the province an unusual clinical profile for its size.

Worth being exact about, because it decides where you would live. This campus is not in Sakon Nakhon city: it sits at 199 Moo 3 on the Phang Khon–Waritchaphum road in Tambon Phang Khon, Phang Khon district, postcode 47160 — roughly 55km northwest of Mueang Sakon Nakhon by road, out along the Udon Thani side of the province. RMUTI's own published institution list gives the Sakon Nakhon campus three faculties: Industry and Technology, Natural Resources, and Nursing. That last one matters — the province does award a nursing degree, and it is taught 55km from the provincial hospital rather than beside it. The same campus also runs the Sakon Nakhon Thai Traditional Medicine Hospital Luang Pu Faep Suphattho, which is in a third district again, at 163 Moo 13, Tambon Pla Lo, Waritchaphum. Anyone studying or working at RMUTI should be house-hunting in Phang Khon town, not on the lakeshore.

A degree-awarding body headquartered inside Sakon Nakhon city that most guides to the province miss entirely. Its offices are inside Sakon Nakhon Technical College at 219 Nittayo Road, Tambon That Choeng Chum, Mueang Sakon Nakhon 47000. It is worth naming because it corrects the usual assumption about Thai technical colleges — that they stop at the ปวช. and ปวส. certificates. This institute's own published programme list gives Sakon Nakhon Technical College five Bachelor of Technology (ทล.บ.) subjects: Mechanical Technology, Electrical Technology, Civil Technology, Accounting, and Modern Management. Its only other listed degree site is Nawaminthrachinee Mukdahan Industrial and Community Education College, over in Mukdahan province. For a working adult already holding a ปวส., that is a four-year-equivalent degree route available without leaving Sakon Nakhon.

There is no IB, British or American international school in Sakon Nakhon — no full international-curriculum school runs here, and we are not going to dress the EP and MEP streams up as one.
