Overview

The short version

Sukhothai Airport (THS) is privately owned and operated by Bangkok Airways, its only carrier, flying nonstop from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport in about 1 hour 15 minutes. From arrivals, pre-arranging a taxi or hotel shuttle is the safest bet since a metered taxi rank isn't guaranteed at this small airport -- third-party listings put a taxi around $45-60 and a shuttle around THB 180-300 depending on destination. Grab is listed as available at the airport, and Chic Car Rent runs the one confirmed on-site rental desk, useful for reaching both New Sukhothai City and the Historical Park 12km beyond it.

01

The airport, in brief

Sukhothai Airport (THS) is privately owned and operated by Bangkok Airways -- one of the airline's own "boutique airports" -- and sits in Sawankhalok district, roughly 27-30km north of New Sukhothai City and about 40km from Sukhothai Historical Park. Bangkok Airways is currently the only airline serving THS, flying the 406km, roughly 1-hour-15-minute route nonstop from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) around four times a day across two daily timeslots. There are no other domestic routes and no international flights, so almost everyone arriving by air is connecting through Suvarnabhumi.

02

Taxi

THS is a small regional airport and, unlike a major hub, a metered taxi is not guaranteed to be waiting at the curb -- arranging a pickup in advance (through your hotel or a transfer service) is the safer approach, especially for an early or late flight. Third-party fare estimators put an unmetered on-arrival taxi at roughly $45-60 for the ~30-minute run into town, though that figure comes from a single travel-fare aggregator rather than an official rate card, so treat it as a ballpark and agree the fare (or confirm the pre-booked price) before you get in.

03

Shuttle / minivan

Third-party shuttle-transfer listings quote roughly THB 180 to reach New Sukhothai City and about THB 300 to reach the Historical Park (Old City) area, typically arranged through your hotel or a transfer platform rather than a bundled Bangkok Airways service -- confirm directly with your accommodation whether they run or can book an airport pickup, since this is the most commonly used option for straightforward hotel-to-airport runs.

04

Grab

Grab operates across Thailand's Northern region, including Sukhothai province, and is listed as available at Sukhothai Airport itself. As with any small regional airport, driver density right at the terminal can be thinner than in town, so it's worth opening the app on arrival to check for a nearby car -- if none is available, the pre-arranged taxi or shuttle options above are the reliable fallback. Grab tends to be the easiest way to summon a ride for the return trip from a hotel in New Sukhothai City.

05

Renting a car at the airport

Chic Car Rent (Chic Network) operates a rental desk inside the Sukhothai Airport terminal, making it the one confirmed on-site option for arriving passengers. A rental car is genuinely useful here: New Sukhothai City, the Historical Park (12km further west along Route 12/Jarodvithi Road) and the more remote Si Satchanalai Historical Park have limited public transport connecting them, so a car opens up temple-hopping and day trips that a single airport transfer won't.

FAQ

Sukhothai Airport transfer FAQ

How far is Sukhothai Airport from the Historical Park and New Sukhothai City?

Sukhothai Airport (THS) is roughly 27-30km north of New Sukhothai City and about 40km from Sukhothai Historical Park (Old City), which sits a further 12km west of the new city along Route 12 (Jarodvithi Road).

How do I get from Sukhothai Airport to town or the Historical Park?

Arrange a taxi or hotel shuttle in advance rather than expecting a metered taxi rank -- THS is a small airport and on-the-spot taxis aren't guaranteed. Third-party shuttle listings quote roughly THB 180 to New Sukhothai City and THB 300 to the Historical Park area; Grab is also listed as available at the airport and is worth checking on arrival.

Does Grab work at Sukhothai Airport?

Grab operates across Sukhothai province and is listed as available at THS, but as a small regional airport, driver availability right at the terminal can be lower than in town. If no car is nearby on arrival, a pre-arranged taxi or shuttle is the reliable fallback.

Can I rent a car at Sukhothai Airport?

Yes -- Chic Car Rent (Chic Network) runs a rental desk inside the terminal. A car is genuinely useful for reaching both New Sukhothai City and the Historical Park, since public transport between the two is limited and Si Satchanalai Historical Park further afield has none.

What airlines fly to Sukhothai?

Bangkok Airways is currently the only airline serving Sukhothai Airport (THS), which the airline itself privately owns and operates. It flies the roughly 1-hour-15-minute nonstop route from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) around four times a day. There are no other domestic routes and no international flights to Sukhothai at present.
