Cost of living in Chanthaburi

An inexpensive eastern gem-and-fruit province — with honest, indicative budgets for food, housing and transport, and a clear flag wherever the underlying data is thin.

Share

Read this first: Chanthaburi is a real, distinctive province, but community-contributed price data for it is thin, with relatively few recent contributors. Rather than publish false-precision figures, the tables below give indicative ranges typical of an inexpensive eastern agricultural-and-trading province, clearly labelled as guide estimates. What we can name precisely — the city's real supermarkets, its wholesale option and its new Central Chanthaburi mall and residential tower — we now do, address by address, below. Confirm current asking prices — especially rent — directly for the specific area and building you choose.

Local draft beer (small)฿60–100Cheaper at local spots, more at riverside and coastal venues

Housing & utilities (indicative)

Housing is the biggest swing in any Chanthaburi budget. The Rambhai Barni university area is the cheapest for a modern apartment; the city centre costs a little more for walkability and character — and now includes the 247-unit tower at Central Chanthaburi and the smaller Grand River Suite condo; sea-view coastal housing costs more again; orchard-district houses sit in between. See the rental market guide for lease terms.

ItemIndicative rangeNote
Student apartment / studio, Rambhai Barni university area฿3,500–6,000/moThe deepest, cheapest supply in the city
1-bed apartment or small condo, city centre฿4,000–12,000/moMore for a modern building near the river and gem district

Where people actually shop

Real, address-verified grocery and retail options in Mueang Chanthaburi district — replacing any vague "supermarkets are available" line with names and addresses.

Transport, connectivity & everyday (indicative)

ItemIndicative priceNote
Petrol (1 litre)฿35–45A car or motorbike is a real budget line — there's no mass transit
Mobile plan (calls + data)฿300–500/moAIS, TrueMove H and dtac all cover the province
Home broadband (fibre, unlimited)฿450–800/moAIS Fibre, True and 3BB serve the city and university areas
Songthaew / short local trip฿10–40No mass transit — songthaews, tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis fill in

Chanthaburi has no passenger railway and no mass transit — a motorbike or car is the practical default for anyone outside the downtown core, consistent with the getting-around guide.

One hard number: the statutory wage floor

Almost nothing about Chanthaburi's cost of living is precisely measured — but one figure is. Under the Wage Committee's Announcement (No. 14), resolved on 17 June 2025 and in force from 1 July 2025 (it repealed Announcement No. 13 of 23 December 2024), Chanthaburi's minimum wage is ฿352 a day. That sits just under Bangkok's ฿372 and clearly below the ฿400 floor in neighbouring Rayong and Chonburi — and it is the honest evidence behind the word “inexpensive” on this page. Local wages, not tourist pricing, set what a bowl of noodles or a room can cost here.

Two caveats worth carrying. First, the same announcement sets ฿400 nationwide — Chanthaburi included — for work in licensed hotels of types 2, 3 and 4 and in entertainment venues, so a hospitality job here has a higher floor than the province rate. Second, a minimum is a floor, not an average: skilled, professional and English-speaking roles pay well above it, and the figure tells you about the local price level far more than about what any individual earns.

06

Why we present ranges, not single figures

Chanthaburi draws farmers, gem traders and working residents rather than the tourist or nomad crowds that fund granular cost-of-living coverage in Phuket or Pattaya, so the public datasets for it are thin. Rather than inventing a precise number to complete the picture, this guide uses honest indicative ranges and flags them clearly. As verified, Chanthaburi-specific data becomes available, these tables will be updated to cite it directly.

Frequently asked

Is there reliable cost-of-living data for Chanthaburi?Only partly. Community-contributed price trackers carry some Chanthaburi data, but with relatively few recent contributors for a province this size, so exact figures should be treated as indicative rather than precise. This guide presents indicative ranges typical of an inexpensive eastern agricultural-and-trading province and is explicit that they are guide estimates, not a verified Chanthaburi-specific benchmark. We would rather flag the uncertainty than publish a false-precision number.
Where do people actually shop for groceries in Chanthaburi? The city centre has two full-format supermarkets — Big C Supercenter at 1012 Tha Chalaep Road and Lotus's (Tesco Lotus) at 25/4 Prayatrung Road, both in Wat Mai subdistrict — plus a Makro (East branch, 108/1 Saritidet Road) for bulk buying. Central Chanthaburi, a 46-rai Central Pattana mixed-use development at 22, 107 Moo 7 Maharaj Road that opened 26 May 2022, added a Robinson-anchored mall with a food court, specialty retail, a 158-room hotel and a 247-unit residential tower — the biggest single addition to the city's retail and housing stock in recent years. Outside the city, shopping thins out quickly and a car or motorbike becomes the practical way to reach any of these.
What does electricity cost in Chanthaburi?Chanthaburi is served by the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), which charges the same nationally set residential rate as the rest of provincial Thailand. For September–December 2026, the Energy Regulatory Commission has set the rate at a base of ฿3.78/unit plus an Ft (fuel-adjustment) charge of 16.23 satang/unit, averaging approximately ฿3.95/unit before VAT, tiered roughly ฿2.35–4.42/unit by consumption band. That's the sourced basis for the electricity figure in the housing table above — actual bills vary with air-conditioning use and unit size.
How much does it cost to live in Chanthaburi per month? For a single long-stayer, a realistic all-in budget is broadly in the ฿18,000–35,000/month range depending heavily on housing choice — a student apartment near Rambhai Barni University at the low end, a modern city-centre condo or a sea-view coastal unit at the higher end — plus whether you run a car. Chanthaburi runs well below Pattaya and far below Bangkok, largely because local produce and a student population keep everyday costs competitive.
Why is Chanthaburi relatively cheap? It's an agricultural and trading province — one of Thailand's biggest fruit producers — with abundant cheap local produce, a university student population, and a working provincial economy rather than a tourist or expat-premium market. The wage floor is the measurable version of that: ฿352 a day here against ฿400 in neighbouring Rayong and Chonburi. That combination keeps day-to-day costs low by national standards, though sea-view coastal housing carries a premium.
What is the minimum wage in Chanthaburi?฿352 a day, under the Wage Committee's Announcement (No. 14), which took effect on 1 July 2025 and repealed the previous announcement of December 2024. Two things qualify it: the same announcement sets ฿400 a day nationwide — Chanthaburi included — for licensed hotels of types 2, 3 and 4 and for entertainment venues, so hospitality work has a higher floor than the province rate; and a minimum is a floor rather than an average, so it tells you about the local price level rather than about typical pay. For context, Bangkok is ฿372 and neighbouring Rayong and Chonburi are ฿400.
What's the biggest cost driver in Chanthaburi?Housing and whether you need a car. Rents swing widely between a cheap student apartment, a modern city condo, a sea-view coastal unit and a suburban house, and with no mass transit, anyone living outside the walkable downtown core will spend real money on a motorbike or car and fuel.
How does Chanthaburi compare to Pattaya for cost of living?Directionally, Chanthaburi is cheaper than Pattaya across housing, food and daily costs — it has a smaller economy, far less tourism and expat-premium pricing, and an agricultural, student-influenced market. We present this as directional rather than a precise percentage, since verified side-by-side Chanthaburi data is thin.
