Mahamakut Buddhist University is one of Thailand's two national Buddhist universities and the Dhammayut order's own, and its national headquarters is in Nakhon Pathom -- at Salaya, on the Salaya-Nakhon Chai Si road in Phutthamonthon district. It is filed nationally rather than provincially in almost every list, which is exactly why a province that hosts a whole university's head office was being described as having three.
The institution was founded on 1 October 1893, when King Chulalongkorn granted permission and royal funds to establish a college at Wat Bowonniwet Vihara named after his father, King Mongkut. It was raised to a higher-education council in 1945-46, had its Sasanasat Bandit degree recognised as a bachelor's qualification by statute in 1984, and became a full autonomous state university under its own Act with effect from 1 October 1997. It runs seven campuses and a number of religious-studies colleges across the country from this site.
