Public university · founded 1990 · Suranari, Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima
Suranaree University of Technology was established by royal charter on 27 July 1990 and became fully operational in 1993, taking its name from Thao Suranari, the celebrated local heroine of Nakhon Ratchasima. It was created as Thailand's first autonomous public university, outside the standard civil-service university system, with a founding focus on science and technology education and research for the northeastern region.
The main campus occupies a large site on Maha Witthayalai Road in Suranari sub-district, on the outskirts of Nakhon Ratchasima city. SUT has grown from its technology-focused roots into a comprehensive research university spanning engineering, science, agricultural technology, social technology and medicine, and hosts Thailand's Synchrotron Light Research Institute on its grounds.
