Thailand's national civil aviation training body keeps its flight training centre at Hua Hin Airport, in Hua Hin district. This is where the practical flying is done -- aircraft and helicopter hours, on the airfield -- while the classroom and degree side of CATC sits at the organisation's Bangkok premises on Phahonyothin Road in Chatuchak.
CATC is a state enterprise under the Ministry of Transport rather than a university under the higher-education ministry, which is why it rarely appears in lists of Thai universities despite training a large share of the country's commercial pilots. Hua Hin is its original flight training centre; a second was later opened in Khon Kaen.
For a resident, the practical consequence is the airspace and the noise profile rather than the enrolment: light training aircraft work the Hua Hin circuit through the day, which is worth knowing before signing a lease on the airport side of Phetkasem Road.
