Samut Sakhon educates a large population densely and practically: 146 primary and secondary schools, a strong provincial secondary school in Mahachai, a post-secondary sector geared to manufacturing, logistics and seafood processing, and — contrary to what most relocation guides tell you — a British-curriculum international school inside the province, on the Rama II corridor. What it does not have is a large multi-faculty university or a choice of international campuses. Because Bangkok borders the province directly, the answer to both is usually to commute rather than to compromise. This guide names every institution it cites and is explicit about where the line falls, so families can plan properly.
Samut Sakhon does have a full international school, and it is inside the province rather than across the Bangkok line: Norwich International School, at 233/131 Nusasiri Villages, Rama II Road, Moo 1, Bang Nam Chuet, Mueang Samut Sakhon 74000. It opened in August 2014 with a nursery and primary school and has since added a dedicated early years centre, a sports centre and a secondary school on the same campus. Teaching follows the National Curriculum for England, with elements of the International Primary Curriculum used in primary literacy and maths, and the school describes its programme as running through IGCSE to AS and A Level. Mandarin is compulsory from Nursery to IGCSE, Thai is taught throughout primary, and German is an elective from Year 1. Fees listed by WhichSchoolAdvisor in July 2026 ran from roughly ฿454,000 to ฿641,200 a year, averaging about ฿569,000. The school operates its own buses and minivans with monitors on board. As of 2024 the province had 146 primary and secondary schools — 78 in Mueang district, 32 in Krathum Baen and 36 in Ban Phaeo. Samutsakhonburana School in Mahachai is the long-established provincial flagship secondary school. This is the main schooling route for local and Thai-speaking families, and provision is dense because the population is dense.
The province's oldest technical institution opened on 17 May 1938 as the Samut Sakhon Carpentry School, teaching construction carpentry, and was renamed in stages — Samut Sakhon Trade School, then Samut Sakhon Technical School — before being raised to college status. It now sits under the Office of the Vocational Education Commission within the Institute of Vocational Education, Central Region 5. Nearly ninety years of trade training in a province built on trades.
At 1/2 Moo 1, Tha Sao Phatthana Road, Don Kai Di, Krathum Baen 74110 (034-471239). It teaches the Vocational Certificate in six fields — aquaculture, aquatic-product processing, agricultural mechanics, agro-industry, accounting and business computing — and the High Vocational Diploma in four: navigation and seamanship, agricultural machinery, aquaculture and aquatic-product processing. It began by borrowing classrooms at Samut Sakhon Technical College; the land was donated by Khun Yai Thiap Wiyaphon and offered through the office of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, who in 2004 directed that it be founded as a fisheries college under the Office of the Vocational Education Commission. A marine-navigation qualification taught in Thailand's largest fishing port is not a coincidence.
The province does have a university campus — it is simply a specialist one. The National Sports University's Samut Sakhon campus, formerly the Samut Sakhon Physical Education College, sits in Bang Ya Phraek subdistrict in Mueang district and runs three faculties: Sport Science and Health, Liberal Arts, and Education. It awards three bachelor's degrees — a BSc in Sports Science, a BA in Sport Communication, and a five-year BEd in Physical Education.
At 120/15 Moo 1, Tha Chin–Ekkawat Road, Tha Chin subdistrict, Mueang Samut Sakhon 74000 (034-450-001). A state higher-education institution in the community-college group under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, offering associate degrees in Management, International Logistics Management, Industrial Management, Local Government, Information Technology and Early Childhood Development — a course list aimed squarely at the province's own industrial and logistics economy, and the most affordable route into it.
Samut Sakhon has no large multi-faculty public university of the kind Khon Kaen or Chiang Mai anchor, so students wanting a broad academic degree commute — into Bangkok, which borders the province directly, or north into Nakhon Pathom, where Mahidol University's Salaya campus is within a reasonable drive. And with Norwich, the province has one international school rather than a market: families who want to compare several campuses, or who need an IB or American track specifically, will still be looking across the line at Bang Khun Thian and Thonburi. Both are commutes rather than relocations, which is the practical point.
Yes — one. Norwich International School has been open since August 2014 at 233/131 Nusasiri Villages on Rama II Road in Bang Nam Chuet, Mueang Samut Sakhon, teaching the National Curriculum for England from Nursery through IGCSE and on to AS and A Level. What is limited here is choice, not provision: if you want to compare several campuses, or you specifically need an IB or American curriculum, you will be looking across the border at Bang Khun Thian and Thonburi. Confirm current curriculum, year groups and fees with any school directly before you commit.
Two public higher-education institutions, both in Mueang district. The National Sports University's Samut Sakhon campus in Bang Ya Phraek runs three faculties and three bachelor's degrees — sports science, sport communication and a five-year physical-education teaching degree. Samut Sakhon Community College in Tha Chin awards associate degrees including international logistics management and industrial management. What the province does not have is a large multi-faculty university; for that, students commute to Bangkok or to Mahidol's Salaya campus in Nakhon Pathom.
146 primary and secondary schools as of 2024, split 78 in Mueang district, 32 in Krathum Baen and 36 in Ban Phaeo. Samutsakhonburana School in Mahachai is the best-known provincial secondary school.
In the province, and cheaply. Samut Sakhon Technical College in Mueang has taught trades since 1938. Samut Sakhon Fisheries College at Don Kai Di in Krathum Baen teaches aquaculture, aquatic-product processing and a High Vocational Diploma in navigation and seamanship. Samut Sakhon Community College adds associate degrees in international logistics and industrial management. For a household whose work is in seafood, export, logistics or manufacturing, that pipeline matters more than any university ranking.
It depends on your language plan. For Thai-medium schooling, the province's government schools are dense and well established. For a British curriculum in English, Norwich International School is in-province on the Rama II corridor and runs its own bus service — which makes the Rama II side of Mueang district the obvious place to look for a home. For an IB or American track, plan around a Bangkok-side school and choose your area around that school run rather than the other way round.
