Higher education in Sukhothai -- an honest picture.

The three institutions, profiled

The university that shares the province's name does have a site here

Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University is headquartered in Pak Kret, Nonthaburi, roughly 400 km from here, and that fact is usually where the story stops -- including, until this review, on our own page. It is only half true. STOU has operated a permanent centre inside Mueang Sukhothai since 1 December 1997, on about 10 rai of public land at 4 Moo 7 on the Sukhothai--Kamphaeng Phet road in Ban Kluai, renamed in January 2021 from Regional Distance Education Centre to Regional Academic Services and Community Relations Centre. It is one of eleven such centres in the country, and it does registration, guidance, library and examination-support work for distance students living in the province. If you are studying with STOU from Sukhothai, this building is your university.

The reverse claim needs the same discipline. A stand-alone "Sukhothai Rajabhat University" is repeated by low-quality directory sites and does not exist: it is absent from Thailand's 38-member Rajabhat system and has no official site. We leave it off deliberately, and you should treat any listing that includes it as unreliable about everything else too.

Where a Sukhothai bachelor's degree is actually awarded

The largest post-school sector in this province is not any of the three above -- it is the state vocational system, and it is routinely described as certificate-only. That description is out of date nationally. Sukhothai has six colleges under the Office of the Vocational Education Commission: Sukhothai Technical College (2/4 Moo 5, Ban Kluai, Mueang, 055-611201), Sukhothai Vocational College (108 Singhawat Road, Thani, Mueang), Sukhothai Polytechnic College, Si Satchanalai Industrial and Community Education College, Si Samrong Industrial and Community Education College, and Sukhothai College of Agriculture and Technology.

Those colleges teach the certificate and diploma levels themselves, but the bachelor's degree above them belongs to a separate body: the Institute of Vocational Education, Northern Region 3, at 410 Moo 1, Phitsanulok--Bueng Phra Road, Bueng Phra, Mueang Phitsanulok (055-337611). The institute awards continuing Bachelor of Technology degrees taught inside its member colleges, and it publishes its own quota, general and supplementary admission rounds each year. In other words the teaching can be local while the awarding body is one province east -- the same shape as the nursing and health colleges elsewhere in the region.

What we did not confirm: which Sukhothai college currently runs which Bachelor of Technology subject. The institute publishes that table through its admissions portal and PDF announcements rather than as a page we could read and quote, and we would rather name the mechanism than invent the list. Ask the college directly, and ask in the round you intend to apply for -- the subject list changes between years.

What Sukhothai does not have

• No resident public research university. The nearest is Naresuan University in Phitsanulok, about an hour east, which is also where the region's international-programme and ED-visa infrastructure sits.
• No Rajabhat university. Not in the 38-member system, no official site, and the claim traces to directory listings rather than to any ministry register.
• No nursing college. We found no Praboromarajchanok Institute college filed in this province; the nearest is Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Buddhachinaraj, in Phitsanulok. That rests on the institute's national network listing rather than on a province-scoped register, so treat it as strong rather than certified.
• No private university campus that we could find. Basis: national campus and institution lists, again not a province-by-province register.
• A Buddhist college: not asserted either way. We could not reach a register scoped to Sukhothai for Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya or Mahamakut units, and a national summary is not a register -- so we publish no claim in either direction rather than dress our own gap as a finding.
