Udon Thani's oldest continuously-operating post-school institution is not a university at all. Udon Thani Vocational College opened on 7 July 1938 in the grounds of the old Udon viceroy's residence, as the Udon Thani Weaving School -- a single trade, taught to women. Dressmaking was added in 1940, the two merged in 1948 and the school became Udon Thani Women's Trade School, then Udon Thani Vocational School in 1972. It merged with Udon Thani Technical School in October 1976 and separated again as its own college in 1979.
