Thailand has 84 World Athletics certified road courses — a serious running country, not a novelty one. The big city marathon is Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok, 28–29 November 2026, from 1,500 baht. Races start between 02:00 and 04:30 because of the heat, and Bangkok’s parks open at 04:30 for the same reason. The thing most guides miss: the PM2.5 season runs December to April and overlaps almost exactly with the months that are otherwise best for running. That overlap is the single most useful thing on this page.
The races, and where each date actually comes from
Race dates and fees are the highest-risk facts in any running guide, because they change every year and stale ones circulate for a long time. So this table is explicit about its sourcing: rows marked “own site” were read on 7 September 2026 from the race’s own website. Rows marked “AIMS record only” come from the governing body’s register because the race itself publishes nothing readable — treat those as indicative, not as announced.
| Race | Where | Date and source | Distances (km) | Start times |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok | Bangkok | 28–29 Nov 2026 (own site) | 42.195 / 21.1 / 10K / 4.5K | Marathon 02:00 · Half 04:00 · 10K 06:00 |
| Chiang Mai Marathon | Chiang Mai | 20 Dec 2026 (own site) | 42.195 / 21.1 / 10K / 3K | Marathon 03:00 · Half 04:00 · 10K 05:00 |
| Chombueng Marathon (39th) | Ratchaburi | 17–18 Jan 2026 (organiser) | 42.195 / 21.1 / 10K / 3K | Not published on the page read |
| Bangkok Marathon (BDMS) | Bangkok | 10 Jan 2027 (AIMS record only) | Not readable on own site | Not readable on own site |
| Buriram Marathon | Buriram | 23 Jan 2027 (AIMS record only) | Not published on own site | Not published on own site |
| Laguna Phuket Marathon | Phuket | 11–13 Jun 2027 (own site) | 42.195 / 21.1 / 10K / 5K / 2K | Marathon 03:00 · Half 04:30 |
Two rows deserve a warning. The Bangkok Marathon’s November 2026 edition was postponed, with AIMS now recording 10 January 2027 — and its own site publishes nothing machine-readable at all, no distances, no fees, no start times. A race that has moved once can move again. Buriram publishes a countdown with no date on it. If either is your target race, watch the race’s own channels rather than trusting a date you read anywhere, this page included.
Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok was open for registration when we checked on 7 September 2026, in its Last Minute tier running to 31 October. Entry closes well before the race, as it does everywhere.
What entry actually costs
Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok publishes a clean tier ladder, which makes it the best illustration of how Thai race pricing works — register early and you pay meaningfully less. Thai baht, from the race’s own site, excluding a 50-baht system fee.
| Registration window | 42K | 21K | 10K | 4.5K |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Early Bird (3–7 Jul) | 1,500 | 1,300 | 800 | 650 |
| Regular (8 Jul – 31 Aug) | 1,600 | 1,400 | 900 | 700 |
| Last Minute (1 Sep – 31 Oct) | 1,800 | 1,600 | 1,000 | 700 |
Chiang Mai Marathon publishes its fees under a heading that says, explicitly, that they are for overseas and foreign entrants — 1,500 baht for the marathon at the regular rate, 2,000 in the delay window and 2,500 for the charity window; the half is 1,200 regular, and the 10K is 700. We are flagging the heading because it matters: these are the foreigner rates, not the general price, and the Thai-national table was not published on the page we read.
Against European or North American city marathons, all of this is inexpensive. A 42K entry at 1,500 to 1,800 baht is a fraction of what the equivalent costs in London or Chicago, which is a genuine part of why Thailand has built a road-racing calendar this deep.
Certified is not the same as labelled
This is the distinction that gets blurred in almost every article on Thai running, and it is worth getting right because it changes what a race actually is.
World Athletics publishes its own list of certified standard-distance and world-rankings road races, updated 16 March 2026. Thailand has 84 certified courses on it — Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok, Bangkok Marathon, Buriram, Laguna Phuket, Chom Bueng, ChiangMai21, Bangsaen, Pattaya, Khao Yai, Korat, Songkhla, Yala, Hat Yai, Krabi, Nong Khai, the River Kwai race at Kanchanaburi and many more. That is a substantial road-racing infrastructure by any standard.
Certification means the course has been measured and verified to be the distance it claims. That is genuinely important — it is what makes a time comparable and a qualifying standard real. It says nothing about elite fields, prize money, or a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Elite label. The World Athletics list itself states it only displays races whose course is certified.
On labels, we are being careful. Several Thai races appear in World Athletics’ label road races calendar, but the pages we could read do not publish a tier. The only Thai label tier we could confirm from World Athletics itself is a Bronze Label for the Buriram Marathon of 9 February 2020. Where a race advertises a particular label on its own marketing, we have treated it as the race’s claim rather than a World Athletics fact — including one Bangkok race that advertises an Elite Label we could not find published on any World Athletics page.
For a runner chasing a qualifying time, certification is the thing that matters and Thailand has plenty of it. For a runner chasing a field, ask the race directly what its current status is.
Where you actually run in Bangkok
Bangkok running is park running, and the parks open at 04:30 — a fact that explains the entire local training culture. Hours below are from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s own parks portal, corroborated by its Environment Department’s announcement of the 04:30 to 22:00 schedule effective 1 June 2024.
| Park | District | Official hours and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lumphini Park | Pathum Wan (Rama 4 Rd) | 04:30–22:00 · cycling 10:00–15:00 |
| Benjakitti Park | Khlong Toei (Ratchadaphisek Rd) | 04:30–22:00 · 2.8 km run route · 1.6 km skywalk |
| Chatuchak Park | Chatuchak (Kamphaeng Phet 3 Rd) | 04:30–22:00 |
| Wachirabenchathat (Suan Rot Fai) | Chatuchak (Lat Yao) | 04:30–21:00 — closes an hour earlier |
| Benjasiri Park | Khlong Toei (Sukhumvit 22–24) | 04:30–22:00 · 29 rai |
Benjakitti is the best-built running venue in the city. The BMA’s own page gives it 450 rai, a 2.8 km running route and a 1.6 km elevated skywalk connecting the park zones and linking onward toward Lumphini via the green bridge. Two loops of the run route is most of a 10K without touching a road.
Watch Wachirabenchathat. The old Suan Rot Fai closes at 21:00, an hour earlier than the others, which is exactly the sort of detail that ends an evening long run early. And note that Lumphini restricts cycling to 10:00–15:00, so the early morning and the evening belong to runners.
Living within a walk of Benjakitti or Lumphini is a real quality-of-life difference for a runner in this city, and it is priced accordingly — the Neighborhood Finder will show you what Khlong Toei and Pathum Wan cost against districts further out, and our Bangkok guide covers the trade-offs.
The heat, and the 2am start
The Thai Meteorological Department’s own climate page sets the frame: the hot season runs mid-February to mid-May, the rainy season mid-May to mid-October, and the cool season mid-October to mid-February. For the Central region, which includes Bangkok, its 1981–2010 averages give mean maximum temperatures of 32.3 to 36.2 degrees Celsius. The national record is 44.6 degrees, recorded on 28 April 2016 at Mae Hong Son.
That is why the races run in the dark. Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok starts its marathon at 02:00 with a 09:30 cut-off; Chiang Mai starts at 03:00 with a 10:00 cut-off; Laguna Phuket has moved to 03:00 for the marathon and 04:30 for the half. These are not quirky start times, they are the whole design of the race.
- Your last real meal is the previous afternoon, not a pre-race breakfast. Plan it deliberately.
- A 02:00 start means being awake by midnight and at the start well before then. Sleep is the day before, not the night before.
- Sunrise arrives mid-race. The last two hours are run in rising heat and full sun, which is where most people come apart.
- Hydration strategy has to assume the finish is hotter than the start — the opposite of a European race.
Our weather and seasons guide has the month-by-month picture if you are planning a training block rather than a single race.
PM2.5: the season that overlaps the good running months
Here is the tension no training plan for Thailand should ignore. The cool, dry months are the best months to run. They are also the worst months for air quality.
The Pollution Control Department states on its own site that PM2.5 accumulates in Bangkok, its vicinity and the main cities during December to April. Set that against the running calendar — the big city marathons run late November to January, and the comfortable training months are exactly December through February — and the overlap is close to total.
Thailand tightened its own standard from 1 June 2023: the 24-hour PM2.5 standard moved from 50 to 37.5 micrograms per cubic metre and the red alert threshold from 91 to 75.1, on a five-colour scale, drawing on WHO guidelines and interim targets. A day that would have been within standard before 2023 may not be now, which is worth knowing if you are comparing older figures.
Practically: check the reading before a hard session between December and April rather than judging by how the sky looks, treat the north in the burning months with more caution than Bangkok, and be willing to move an interval session indoors. This is not a reason to avoid running in Thailand — it is a reason to have a plan for the fifteen or twenty days a season when the number is bad.
Our air quality score by city compares Thailand’s cities on PM2.5 and the burning season, which is the single most useful input if you are choosing where to live as a runner.
Running clubs in Bangkok
Bangkok has an active and welcoming club scene, most of it meeting at the same parks. From a weekly calendar published by Run Club Bangkok: Lumpini Running Club meets Tuesday and Thursday at 18:00 by the King Rama VI statue at Gate 4 of Lumphini; 6am Run Club BKK Saturday and Sunday at 05:45 at Gate 1; Sabai Run Club Friday and Sunday at 20:00 at Gate 3 of Benjakitti; Anti Run Club Sunday at 17:30 at Benjakitti; Mikkeller Running Club Wednesday and Saturday at 17:30 from Ekkamai Soi 10; and Theory of Momentum Sunday at 07:00 from the Rot Fai Park car park.
One caveat we are stating rather than hiding: that is an aggregator’s calendar, not each club’s own page. Meeting points and times drift. Check the club’s own channel before turning up at 05:45 on the strength of a table.
Coaching, and what counts as work
Running is not an occupation and entering a race needs no permit. Being paid to coach is different, and the Thai definition of work is broader than most people expect.
The Emergency Decree on Managing the Work of Foreigners B.E. 2560 (2017) defines work at section 5 as the use of physical strength or knowledge for engaging in an occupation or a job, with or without an intention to obtain wages or any other benefit, except work prescribed in a ministerial notification. Section 8 prohibits a foreigner from carrying out work without a permit. The phrase “with or without an intention to obtain wages” is the part worth reading twice.
We are deliberately not quoting penalty figures. The 2017 decree’s original penalties were reduced by an amending decree in force from 28 March 2018, and we could not read the current figures from a Thai government source. Any guide quoting the 2017 numbers as current is quoting a superseded provision.

What we could not confirm
- Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok 2027. Date, fees and distances do not yet exist on any official source. Only the 2026 edition is published.
- Any Thai race’s current World Athletics label tier. Races appear in the label calendar without a published tier. Bronze for Buriram in 2020 is the only tier we could confirm from World Athletics itself. Where a race advertises a label, we have said so as a claim.
- Bangkok Marathon (BDMS) details. Its own site returns no readable distances, fees or start times. The 10 January 2027 date and the note that the November 2026 edition was postponed come from AIMS, not from the race.
- Buriram Marathon 2027. Its own site shows a countdown with no date; its fee page is published as images. The 23 January 2027 date is an AIMS record.
- Chombueng Marathon 2027 (40th edition). The dedicated race domain serves an empty directory listing. The confirmed detail on this page is the January 2026 edition, from the organising university.
- “Thailand’s oldest marathon”. Chombueng is often given this title. The organising university claims 39 editions and more than 39 years but makes no oldest-in-Thailand claim, and we could not verify one. We have dropped the superlative rather than repeat it.
- Chiang Mai’s Thai-national entry fees. Only the table headed for overseas and foreign entrants was published on the page we read. Note also that two similarly named Chiang Mai races exist on different domains; do not assume they are the same event.
- Lumphini running etiquette — the direction of travel and the national anthem at 08:00 and 18:00. Widely described in travel writing, but we found no official or authoritative source, and the BMA park pages say nothing about it. We have left it out rather than present custom as rule.
- The full Thai AQI band table. We have the two threshold changes from the government portal but not every band’s range; the Air4Thai site was unreachable.
- The current penalty for working without a permit. Confirmed only that the 2018 decree reduced it. See section 08.
- Running club meeting points. From an aggregator, not each club’s own page. Verify before you turn up.
Frequently asked questions
It depends on when you are here. Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok is the biggest, on 28 and 29 November 2026 — the half on the Saturday, the marathon, 10K and family run on the Sunday — with entry from 1,500 to 1,800 baht depending on when you register. Chiang Mai Marathon on 20 December 2026 starts and finishes at Tha Phae Gate and publishes 1,500 baht for the marathon at the regular foreigner rate. Laguna Phuket is the June option, 11 to 13 June 2027. Chombueng in Ratchaburi is the long-running one — its 39th edition ran in January 2026 — and is a university-organised race with a very different character to the city marathons. All these dates come from the races' own sites; the Bangkok Marathon and Buriram dates circulating for 2027 come from AIMS rather than the races, and one of them has already been postponed once.
Heat. The Thai Meteorological Department's own climate data puts the hot season from mid-February to mid-May and gives mean maximum temperatures for the Central region, which includes Bangkok, of 32.3 to 36.2 degrees Celsius across the 1981 to 2010 averages, with a national record of 44.6 degrees. Even in the cool season a Bangkok morning warms fast. So the races run in the dark: Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok starts its marathon at 02:00 with a 09:30 cut-off, Chiang Mai at 03:00, and Laguna Phuket moved its marathon start to 03:00 and its half to 04:30. If you have never raced overnight, that changes everything about how you eat, sleep and pace the day before — plan for it rather than discovering it at the start line.
84 Thai courses appear on World Athletics' own certified road races list, updated 16 March 2026 — including Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok, Bangkok Marathon, Buriram, Laguna Phuket, Chom Bueng, ChiangMai21, Bangsaen, Pattaya, Khao Yai, Korat, Songkhla, Hat Yai, Krabi and the River Kwai race at Kanchanaburi. One distinction matters and is constantly blurred: that list certifies course measurement, nothing else. It is not a label. The only Thai label tier we could confirm from World Athletics itself is a Bronze Label for the Buriram Marathon of February 2020. Races do appear in World Athletics' label calendar, but without a published tier, so where a race advertises a specific label we have reported it as the race's claim rather than as a World Athletics fact.
The city parks, almost all of which open at 04:30 — which is the real reason Bangkok running happens before dawn. From the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's own parks portal: Lumphini in Pathum Wan is 04:30 to 22:00 with cycling restricted to 10:00 to 15:00, so early mornings are on foot. Benjakitti in Khlong Toei is the best-built running venue in the city, with a 2.8 km running route and a 1.6 km elevated skywalk that connects the park zones and links toward Lumphini. Chatuchak Park and Benjasiri also run 04:30 to 22:00. Watch Wachirabenchathat, the old Suan Rot Fai — it closes at 21:00, an hour earlier than the others, which catches people out on evening long runs.
Seasonally, yes, and it is worth planning around. The Pollution Control Department states on its own site that PM2.5 accumulates in Bangkok, its vicinity and the main cities from December to April. That overlaps almost exactly with the cool, dry months that are otherwise the best running season, which is the genuine tension for anyone training here. Thailand tightened its own standard from 1 June 2023: the 24-hour PM2.5 standard moved from 50 to 37.5 micrograms per cubic metre and the red alert level from 91 to 75.1, on a five-colour scale. Practically, check the reading before a hard session between December and April rather than assuming a clear-looking morning is a clean one, and treat the north in the burning months with more caution than Bangkok.
Running itself is not an occupation and needs no permit. Coaching for pay is a different matter. The Emergency Decree on Managing the Work of Foreigners of 2017 defines work very broadly — the use of physical strength or knowledge for engaging in an occupation, with or without an intention to obtain wages — and prohibits a foreigner from working without a permit. Note that we are deliberately not quoting penalty figures: the original 2017 penalties were reduced by an amending decree in force from 28 March 2018, and we could not read the current figures from a Thai government source. If someone offers you paid coaching work, ask how they intend to employ you before you accept.
