Thailand runs two holiday lists, not one. The Prime Minister’s Office publishes the government list that closes ministries, immigration and land offices. The Bank of Thailand publishes a separate notification that closes banks. They differ in both directions, and the gap is where people lose a day. Below: the 2026 calendar from our own dataset, the full 2027 bank list straight from the Bank of Thailand’s notification, and a plain account of what we could not confirm.

Every weekday above was re-computed against the 2027 calendar before publication and all eighteen agree with the notification. There is no additional special holiday on the 2027 list — 2026 had two.
The Islamic Bank of Thailand takes Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as extra holidays, per the Sheikhul Islam Office’s announcement, if the day does not already fall on a listed holiday or a weekend. Separately, branches of all financial institutions in Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, Satun and Songkhla get those two days and Chinese New Year on the same condition. The Chinese New Year clause sits in the same sentence as the two Islamic holidays, which is probably why it gets missed. Applying its own wording to 2027: Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 6 February 2027, so the five-province exception does not arise next year. That last line is our reading of the published rule, not a statement the Bank of Thailand has made about 2027.
This is the single most expensive misunderstanding about Thai holidays, and almost every calendar online flattens it. There are two separate instruments. The Prime Minister’s Office annual government holiday announcement — the version circulated by the Secretariat of the Cabinet after the Cabinet resolution of 21 May 2019 — governs ministries, provincial offices, immigration and land offices. A Bank of Thailand notification, issued fresh each year, governs banks. Four concrete divergences:

If you are going to an office rather than a bank — a visa extension or a 90-day report, a land office transfer, a school — the government list is the one that applies, and a deadline does not move because the counter is shut. The practical rule: phone the specific office. Observance varies between a provincial branch and a Bangkok head office, and private employers set their own calendar on top of both lists.
The next working day is given instead. That is why four of the eighteen 2027 bank holidays are substitutions, and it has a useful side effect: you can read the lunar dates backwards off them. A Monday substitution for Makha Bucha means Makha Bucha itself fell on the Sunday. That is how section 05 dates four of the five alcohol-free days without relying on a calendar site.
Asarnha Bucha falls on Sunday 18 July 2027. Khao Phansa is always the day after, so it falls on Monday 19 July. The Bank of Thailand puts the Asarnha Bucha substitution on that same Monday. For a bank, that is one holiday and the question ends there. For government offices it does not: Monday is already Khao Phansa on the government list, so the Sunday substitution has nowhere obvious to go, and whether the Cabinet adds Tuesday 20 July is unresolved. We located no 2027 Cabinet resolution on government holidays. Assume Monday 19 July is closed, and check closer to the date whether Tuesday was added.
Five, not four. The operative document is the Prime Minister’s Office Announcement re Designation of Days Prohibiting the Sale of Alcoholic Beverages (No. 3) B.E. 2558, published in the Royal Gazette on 18 February 2015 at volume 132, Special Part 39 Ngor, page 10. Its single operative clause names Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asarnha Bucha, Khao Phansa and Ok Phansa. The four-day list still circulating everywhere is the superseded 2009 announcement. A further announcement published on 9 May 2025, effective the next day, opened the prohibition for several categories of venue — including hotels under the Hotel Act, passenger areas of international airports, entertainment venues holding the relevant permit, and businesses in areas the Public Health Minister designates as tourism areas. Convenience stores, supermarkets and ordinary restaurants are unchanged. Which areas and which events qualify are published as ministerial acts rather than as a public list, so ask the venue.

Note the shape of 21 February 2027: Makha Bucha is the Sunday, the bank holiday is the Monday. Banks shut on a day you can buy wine and open on the day you cannot. More on the holy days themselves on Buddhist holy days in Thailand, and on the rules around service on nightlife and alcohol.
Friday 16 October 2026 is an additional special holiday for financial institutions and specialized financial institutions in the Bangkok area, for one day, under Bank of Thailand notification 26/2569, signed on 4 June 2026. It is a Bangkok measure, so a branch in Chiang Mai or Phuket is not covered by it. We are telling you here in prose because the dataset behind the calendar at the top of this page has no row for that day, and we would rather say so than leave you to find out at a locked door.
Two bank holidays that older guides still print are gone. The half-year holiday for financial institutions on 1 July was abolished from 2019 onwards. The extra annual-accounts holiday on 1 April for the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Co-operatives was abolished from 2022. The Bank of Thailand gives its reason on its own holiday page: closing systems are efficient enough now that service does not need to stop for them.
For banks, 18. The Bank of Thailand's notification 37/2569, signed on 17 August 2026, lists 18 days on which financial institutions and specialized financial institutions close in 2027. The government holiday list is a separate document with a different count, and the two are not interchangeable — Labor Day sits on the bank list, the Royal Ploughing Ceremony sits on the government list.
No, and assuming they are is how people waste a trip. Thailand publishes two lists: the Prime Minister's Office annual government holiday announcement, which governs ministries, immigration and land offices, and a Bank of Thailand notification, which governs banks. Khao Phansa is the clearest case — it closes government offices but does not appear on the Bank of Thailand's 2026 or 2027 list at all, so your bank is open.
In Bangkok, yes. Bank of Thailand notification 26/2569, signed on 4 June 2026, designates Friday 16 October 2026 as an additional special holiday for financial institutions and specialized financial institutions in Bangkok, for one day. It is a Bangkok-area measure, so a branch elsewhere in the country is not covered by it. The interactive calendar on this page does not yet show that day, because the dataset behind it has no row for it.
The following working day is normally given instead, which is why four of the 18 bank holidays in 2027 are substitution days. It also means you can read the lunar dates backwards off the substitution: the Bank of Thailand substitutes Monday 22 February 2027 for Makha Bucha, so Makha Bucha itself is Sunday 21 February.
Songkran runs Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 April 2027, and all three days are on the Bank of Thailand's 2027 list. In practice many private businesses stretch the break either side of it, and long-distance transport fills up well in advance. Treat the three gazetted days as the floor, not the whole shutdown.

The one exception is written into the Bank of Thailand's own notification: branches in Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, Satun and Songkhla get Chinese New Year as an extra holiday, but only if the day does not fall on another listed holiday or a Saturday or Sunday. Chinese New Year 2027 is Saturday 6 February, so on the face of that wording the exception does not arise next year.
Because the government list does not give one either. Against that entry the Prime Minister's Office announcement prints no date at all, only that the Bureau of the Royal Household fixes it year by year. Any site showing you a future Royal Ploughing date has invented it.
They follow the government holiday list rather than the bank list, so the two do not line up. Immigration counters also run their own queue limits and cut-off times around a long weekend, and a 90-day report or extension deadline does not move because an office is shut. Confirm the specific office before you travel to it.
No. The Bank of Thailand abolished the half-year holiday for financial institutions from 2019 onwards, and abolished the extra annual-accounts holiday on 1 April for the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Co-operatives from 2022. Its stated reason is that closing systems no longer need a shut day. Older guides still list both.

The 2026 rows are corroborated against the Bank of Thailand’s published financial-institutions holiday list, and the 2027 list in section 02 is transcribed from that bank’s own notification 37/2569. Dataset rows last reviewed 2026-07-24. That list is the bank list: it is not the government holiday list, and section 03 sets out where the two part company. Lunar holy days move every year, and the Cabinet can add special or substitution days at short notice. We do not publish a date we cannot verify — anything still pending official confirmation is marked, and section 07 names what is missing. Always confirm a critical appointment at an immigration office, bank, land office or school directly before a holiday.
