American Prep International School opened in Hat Yai in August 2015 and is the city's only American-curriculum school, teaching to California Department of Education standards. What its directory listings usually miss is how the school describes itself: the strapline on its own site is 'trend-setting e-learning and blended education school in Thailand', and that is a statement about method, not marketing garnish. Middle-school students each work from a laptop carrying the prescribed e-books for their grade, and the school treats blended delivery as its defining characteristic rather than an add-on. Character development is structured around five named traits — collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, compassion and communication — taught across the curriculum rather than in a separate lesson. Students sit NWEA MAP tests through the year, which gives parents an externally normed measure of progress that neither of the city's British schools publishes an equivalent of.
The campus
A central Hat Yai campus. The school has described a library, a computer lab, a science lab with basic equipment, a play area for the younger grades, a cafeteria cooking lunches on site, and air-conditioned classrooms each with a computer, a printer and a large classroom monitor. Those descriptions come from a school FAQ the school itself dates to October 2016, so treat the facilities list as a starting point for a tour rather than a current inventory.
The academic pathway
- Early Years: Pre-K and Kindergarten.
- Elementary: Grades 1 to 6, on California Department of Education standards, covering English, mathematics, science, IT, social studies, art, music and PE.
- Blended and e-learning delivery throughout, with middle-school students working from individual laptops loaded with the prescribed e-books for their grade.
- NWEA MAP testing runs on a quarterly cycle through the school year.
- The 5 C's — collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, compassion, communication — run cross-curricular rather than as a standalone subject.
Accreditation, exam boards & membership
- Curriculum standards are those of the California Department of Education. The school publishes a memberships and awards page; we have not restated items from it that we could not verify independently.
- We could not verify a whole-school international accreditation — the kind CIS or WASC awards — from a primary source. That is not a criticism; it is a gap, and a family for whom accreditation matters should ask directly rather than infer.

Scale of the school
The figures that circulate for APIS — around eighty students, roughly ten to a class — trace back to a FAQ page on the school's own site that the school explicitly dates to 20 October 2016. That is a decade old. We report them as what they are, a dated snapshot, rather than dressing them up as current, and we would encourage you to ask admissions for today's roll and today's class sizes. The school has grown since.
Who it tends to suit
Families with primary-age children who want an American curriculum and are comfortable with a genuinely blended, technology-led model — and who have a plan for what happens after Grade 6. It is also the natural fit for families who expect to move on to a US or US-curriculum school, since MAP data and California standards travel cleanly into that system in a way an IGCSE half-course does not.

Confirm these with the school before you commit
- Whether there is a middle school, and how far it runs. This is the single question that matters most at APIS and we cannot answer it for you honestly. The school's own vision statement describes it as an 'elementary institution'; its Grade 6 graduation is the terminal ceremony it celebrates each May; and its 2016 FAQ answered 'do you offer education up to the age of 18?' with 'No' while saying high-school grades would be added as numbers grew. Its site does carry a Middle School page in the Academics menu, but that page currently returns the site's home page rather than any middle-school content. Ask admissions plainly which grades are running this year before you enrol a child who will reach Grade 7 while you are still in Hat Yai.
- The current roll and class sizes, for the reason set out above.
- Whether the school holds any whole-school accreditation beyond its California standards alignment.
- Do not confuse this school with American Pacific International School in Chiang Mai, which also goes by 'APIS', which does board, and which does run to eighteen. Searching 'APIS Thailand' will not reliably return the Hat Yai school.
- The school's governance, if that matters to you: California Prep International School in Saraburi names Dr. Adelino T. Libato as its co-founder and co-board chair while also listing him as board chair, co-founder and academic consultant to American Prep International School in Hat Yai. The two schools are separately located and separately run, but that link is published on California Prep's own site and is worth knowing.
- The current fee schedule — tuition, application and enrolment or admission fees, any refundable deposit, uniforms, lunches, the bus and trips. We link each school's own fees page rather than reprint a number that goes stale every August.
- Whether the year group you need has a place, or a waitlist, for your intended start date. With three schools in the city, a single full cohort can decide where you live.
- How far the school actually takes your child. This is the Hat Yai question. One of the three does not run a secondary programme at all, so a family with a seven-year-old is making a decision that expires.
- Which examination board each subject is entered with. Hat Yai's two through-schools both use a mix of Cambridge International and Oxford AQA, and the mix is set subject by subject, not school-wide.
- The school bus route, catchment and pick-up time for the exact neighbourhood you are considering — then ask what time the bus gets back. Hat Yai is compact, but the Kuanlung airport corridor and the city centre are opposite ends of a real drive at 07:30.
- Entry requirements: assessment or placement testing, interviews, English-language support, and the reports or transcripts you must supply.
- For boarding: the age it starts, the flexible and full options actually running this year, and the weekend and exeat arrangements.
