Mahamakut Buddhist University, Isan Campus at a glance

The Mahamakut Buddhist University council approved the founding of its first campus in Northeast Thailand on 18 December 1990, at Wat Si Chan (a royal monastery) in Mueang Khon Kaen, under the name Mahamakut Buddhist Council of Education, Isan Campus. After the 1997 royal decree that made Mahamakut a state university, the campus took its present name and moved on 27 June 1999 to Ban Non Chai on Ratkhanueng Road, behind Sri Patcharin Camp and near the Bueng Thung Sang lake, where it remains at 9/37 Moo 12, Tambon Nai Mueang.

Its academic arm is the Isan College of Religious Studies, sitting alongside a campus office and an academic service centre. Despite the Buddhist framing, most of what it teaches is secular and open to lay students: nine bachelor's programmes including English, Political Science, Public Administration, Social Work and Early Childhood Education; six master's programmes; and three doctoral programmes, in Educational Administration, Buddhist Research and Philosophy, and Teaching Thai. It also runs a demonstration school on the campus.
