Schools in Khon Kaen.

Four schools serve Khon Kaen city. Three of them carry the word “International”. Exactly one teaches a child past the age of twelve — and it is the Thai bilingual school. That is the sentence this guide exists to say.

Overview

The short version

Khon Kaen is Isaan’s education capital — a university city with a teaching hospital, an airport and a growing professional expat base. Its school field does not match that billing. Four schools teach in English here, and three of them stop at or before the age of twelve. The one that carries a child to eighteen is Khon Kaen Vithes Suksa Bilingual School, a Thai bilingual school running the Ministry of Education core curriculum with Cambridge layered onto English, maths and science. It follows that only one of the four leads to any leaving qualification at all, and that the only one available in this city is the Thai Mathayom 6 certificate plus Cambridge IGCSEs. There is no A Level, no IB Diploma and no US high-school diploma taught in Khon Kaen.

None of that makes Khon Kaen a bad place to raise a young family — for a child under ten it is a comfortable, affordable and genuinely well-served city. It makes it a place where you plan the second school at the same time as the first. Pair this with the cost-of-living guide and the Khon Kaen hub.

Every school that teaches in English here

All four, including one — American Prime International School in Ban Ped — that appears in no school census we could find and on no other guide to this city. This is a starting point, not a ranking.

Where each school stops — and what a leaver holds

This is the table to read first, and the one no other guide to Khon Kaen publishes. Each figure comes from the school’s own admissions criteria or published subject line-up — the operative document — rather than from its prospectus copy or a directory record.

SchoolAges taughtWhat a leaver holds
ASIS2-12None.
KKIS2 upwards -- entry ages published to Grade 1; the taught programme ends at elementaryNone.
KKVSKindergarten to Secondary 6 (Mathayom 6)The Thai Ministry of Education upper-secondary certificate (Mathayom 6), plus individual Cambridge IGCSE subject certificates -- most commonly in English, Mathematics and the Sciences.
APISPre-Kindergarten to Grade 5 (Pre-K to Grade 3 in the opening year)None.

A note on how the ASIS row was established, because it contradicts what most sources say and what this page itself used to say. ASIS’s School Brief describes a full ladder — the Singapore iPSLE and Cambridge Primary at Grade 6, Cambridge IGCSE at Grade 10, Cambridge A Level at Grade 12. Every verb in that passage is in the future tense. Its FAQ, asked directly what age groups the school caters to, answers: “We cater to children aged 2 to 12 years old”, itemised as Pre-Nursery and Nursery, Kindergarten 1 and 2, and Primary 1–6. Its Academics menu offers Early Years, Primary School and a Senior School (Sixth Form) page — and no secondary school. Where a prospectus and an admissions criterion disagree, we follow the admissions criterion and say why.

Accreditation, and religious character

Two columns families most often forget to ask about, and the two with the longest consequences. Note that a whole-school accreditation (WASC, CIS, Cognia, ONESQA) assesses the school itself, while an examination-board authorisation (Cambridge, IB, College Board) only means it may enter pupils for those exams. “None named” is a third state, and it is not the same as “not accredited” — it means we could not find a claim to check.

When the route runs out, look north

Every guide to a city with a gap sends families to the nearest metropolis. For Khon Kaen that reflex means Bangkok, 450 km south. It is the wrong answer. Udon Thani sits about 120 km north on Highway 2 — comfortably under two hours — and has two schools that both teach their post-16 years on their own campus, which is more than can be said for several better-known schools on the coasts. Udon Thani International School runs the full IB continuum, is accredited with the Council of International Schools, was authorised for the IB Diploma in March 2024 and is secular. International Community School Udon Thani runs an American curriculum from K4 through Grade 12 to a US high-school diploma with Advanced Placement, and is explicitly Christian.

That second one matters more than it looks. Both of Khon Kaen’s American-curriculum primaries — KKIS and APIS — build on California Department of Education standards, and ICSUD continues the same curriculum family to a diploma. It is the closest thing this region has to an unbroken American pathway, and it involves a move. If boarding is the answer instead, American Pacific International School in Chiang Mai boards from its Hang Dong campus and runs to eighteen. See the full Udon Thani schools guide before you decide.

Two schools whose names will send you to the wrong place

Half of Khon Kaen’s schools share an acronym with a different Thai school, and in one case the collision is actively misleading.

KKIS. Khon Kaen International School publishes on a free Wix subdomain and has no .ac.th address of its own. The clean domain kkis.ac.th belongs to KKIS Kasalong International School in Mae Sot, Tak province — roughly 700 km away, running the National Curriculum of England. At least one teaching-jobs directory files that Mae Sot school under the heading “International Schools in Khon Kaen”. If you have been reading about a KKIS that teaches the English national curriculum, you have been reading about a different school in a different province.

APIS. American Prime International School (Khon Kaen) shares its acronym with American Pacific International School in Chiang Mai and with American Prep International School. Only the Chiang Mai one boards and only the Chiang Mai one runs to eighteen. APIS Khon Kaen is also mid-rebrand from Baramee Khon Kaen School and its Facebook page still uses the old handle, so a campus with two names in circulation is exactly what you should expect to find.

The general test, which has caught invented schools in three other Thai cities: does it have its own domain? A findable street address? A telephone that answers? And does its own homepage carry a closure or rebranding notice? A school that fails the first three probably does not exist. A school that carries the fourth is not the school the directories are describing.

Where to live for Khon Kaen’s schools

Khon Kaen has no rail transit of any kind — no BTS, no MRT, no commuter line; the railway station serves intercity services only. Every school run here is a road journey, and the four campuses sit on three different sides of the city. Only ASIS is actually central.

AreaNearest schoolWhat living there is like
Mittraphap Road / city centre (Nai Mueang, near Central Plaza)Asia Singapore International SchoolKhon Kaen's main condo and rental corridor — the widest choice of modern apartments, and the only campus of the four where a central apartment and a short school run are compatible.
Ban Ped — western suburbsAmerican Prime International SchoolA genuine residential suburb west of the centre with its own markets and amenities, popular with Khon Kaen University staff. Lower rents, more houses than condos, and a drive to anywhere else.
Mueang Kao — south-eastKhon Kaen International SchoolQuiet residential sub-district on the south-eastern edge. Cheaper than the centre; you trade walkability for space, and you are on the opposite side of the city from Ban Ped.
Ban Wa — south-eastKhon Kaen Vithes Suksa Bilingual SchoolSuburban, near KKIS but not adjacent to it. Time the run at 07:30 from any street you are considering before signing a lease — none of our four Khon Kaen area guides covers Ban Wa specifically.

An honest limitation worth stating: BAANLYY’s Khon Kaen area guides cover Bueng Kaen Nakhon, the KKU and Srinagarind corridor, Central Plaza and the outer suburbs. Ban Ped, Mueang Kao and Ban Wa — where three of the four campuses actually are — are none of those. We link the outer suburbs guide as the nearest genuinely relevant one rather than invent an anchor, and we would rather say so than route you to a page describing somewhere else. See the Khon Kaen areas guide and where to live.

Beyond K–12

For families relocating on a university-linked posting, Khon Kaen University’s International College (KKUIC) is the region’s main English-medium higher-education option — university-age, not K–12. See our Khon Kaen universities guide and, for younger children, the childcare and nursery guide.

FAQ

Khon Kaen school questions

How many international schools are there in Khon Kaen?

three schools in Khon Kaen have the word "International" in their name, and a fourth — Khon Kaen Vithes Suksa Bilingual School — is a Thai bilingual school running the Cambridge curriculum. That is four English-medium options in total. The more useful number is a different one: of those four, exactly one teaches a child past the age of twelve, and it is the bilingual school, not any of the international ones.

Can my child finish secondary school in Khon Kaen?

Only at Khon Kaen Vithes Suksa Bilingual School. Asia Singapore International School's own admissions FAQ states it caters to children aged 2 to 12. Khon Kaen International School publishes a taught programme covering Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Elementary School only. American Prime International School opened in August 2025 with a published structure to Grade 5. KKVS runs to Secondary 6 with Cambridge IGCSEs sat over two years in upper secondary.

What qualification can a child actually leave Khon Kaen with?

The Thai Ministry of Education upper-secondary certificate (Mathayom 6) plus individual Cambridge IGCSE subject certificates, from KKVS. That is the only leaving qualification available in the city. There is no A Level, no IB Diploma and no US high-school diploma taught anywhere in Khon Kaen — a fact worth knowing before you sign a lease, not after.

Where do Khon Kaen families go when their child ages out?

Udon Thani, about 120 km north on Highway 2 — not Bangkok, 450 km south. Udon Thani International School runs the full IB continuum and was authorised for the IB Diploma in March 2024; International Community School Udon Thani runs an American curriculum from K4 to Grade 12 and a US high-school diploma with Advanced Placement. Both teach their post-16 years on their own campus, which is not true of several better-known schools elsewhere in Thailand. For a boarding answer, American Pacific International School in Chiang Mai boards from its Hang Dong campus.

Is there a secular school in Khon Kaen?

Yes. three of the four name no religious foundation. Khon Kaen International School is the exception and states it plainly: it is "establised on Christian Educational Principles", borrowed from both Catholic and Protestant systems, and Values Education is a taught subject in every year group from Pre-Kindergarten upward. That is a deliberate choice for families to make knowingly, in either direction.

Are Khon Kaen's schools accredited?

This is where the city is weakest and the honest answer is uncomfortable. three of the four name no accrediting body at all on their own websites. Only KKVS holds a dated, published external status — Cambridge Assessment International Education, as a Cambridge International School and Cambridge Primary School, since 2014 — and even that is an examination-board authorisation rather than a whole-school accreditation. "None named" is not the same as "not accredited", but it does mean there is nothing for a parent to check.

Why does BAANLYY not publish school fees for Khon Kaen?

Because fees change every year and a stale figure is worse than none — and because Khon Kaen shows exactly how badly the published numbers can go wrong. The doris directory lists an annual fee band of THB 7,600–14,000 for Asia Singapore International School, which is not an annual international-school fee by any reading. Our own earlier version of this page printed a six-row ASIS tuition table with rows for Grade 7–8 and Grade 9–10, for year groups the school's own admissions FAQ says it does not teach. Ask each school for its current schedule in writing.

This guide is general information for relocation planning, not admissions or financial advice. BAANLYY does not rank, endorse or accept payment from schools, and deliberately publishes no per-school fee figures — they change annually and a stale number is worse than none. School fees, curricula, year groups, campus locations and admissions rules change; confirm current details directly with each school.
