Ask what universities are in Khon Kaen and the answer is two. Ask the question that decides where a family lives -- what awards a bachelor's degree here -- and the answer is 9. Alongside Khon Kaen University and Rajamangala University of Technology Isan there is a private university named for the region, two Buddhist university campuses that teach law and political science as well as scripture, two Ministry of Public Health colleges, a Rajabhat centre named for Loei, and a technical college whose degrees are signed by a regional institute. 3 of the 9 do not have the word “university” in their name at all.
Three institutions a reader would reasonably expect to find in Khon Kaen city are missing from the directory above for good reasons. Saying where each one really is beats leaving the gap unexplained.
Khon Kaen province does have a Ramkhamhaeng regional campus, and it teaches bachelor's degrees in law, political science, business administration and mass communication as well as master's programmes. It is not in the city. It sits on a large site in Ban Phai district on the road to Maha Sarakham, so a student in Mueang Khon Kaen is looking at a drive, not a bus ride across town. Official site →
There is no Khon Kaen Rajabhat University, and no amount of searching will produce one. What exists instead is Loei Rajabhat University's Khon Kaen Education Centre in Tambon Mueang Kao, which is profiled above and teaches six weekend bachelor's programmes here.
CATC's second flight training centre is at Khon Kaen Airport (the first is at Hua Hin), and a large share of Thailand's commercial pilots train through it. It is a state enterprise under the Ministry of Transport rather than an institution under the higher-education ministry, which is why it never appears in lists of Thai universities; its degrees are awarded at CATC's Bangkok headquarters, not here. The consequence for a resident is practical rather than academic: light training aircraft work the Khon Kaen circuit through the day. Official site →
