North Eastern University is the province's private university, and it is invisible to a search for the words "Khon Kaen" because it is named for the region rather than the city. The Ministry of University Affairs issued its licence as a private higher-education institution on 8 March 1988, under the name North Eastern College; it was granted full university status in 1999. Business Administration was the founding faculty in 1988, with engineering, communication arts and law following in later years.

For a relocating family the practical points are that it is a private institution with its own rectorate here -- not a branch of anything -- and that its Thai name, มหาวิทยาลัยภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ, is close enough to the way Khon Kaen University is sometimes described in Thai that the two get confused. They are unconnected institutions with separate governance, separate campuses and separate admissions.
