Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, Khon Kaen Campus at a glance
The Khon Kaen sangha resolved to establish a Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya campus here in 1985; approval was given on 3 October 1985 and confirmed by university order 8/2529 dated 12 December 1985. Teaching began on 16 May 1986 at Wat That, the royal monastery in the town centre, with 21 monastic students in a single Faculty of Buddhism programme, and the campus sign was formally unveiled there on 25 June 1987. By 2007 the intake had outgrown Wat That, and the campus moved to land at Wat Pa Si Charoen Tham in Tambon Khok Si; Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn unveiled the sign at the new site on 17 December 2007.
It is now at 30 Moo 1, Ban Khok Si, and teaches to doctoral level. The bachelor's list runs well beyond Buddhist studies -- Political Science, Public Administration, English and a Bachelor of Laws are all taught here -- alongside master's and doctoral programmes in Buddhist Studies, Philosophy, Buddhist Educational Administration and teaching subjects. The Khon Kaen campus is also the parent that seeded MCU's presence across the wider region: its Loei extension opened in 1996, its Roi Et classroom in 1999 (raised to Roi Et Buddhist College on 26 November 2015) and its Maha Sarakham unit in 2006 (raised to a Buddhist college on 26 December 2018).
