Nakhon Lampang Buddhist College is one of the constituent Buddhist colleges of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University (MCU), Thailand's national Buddhist university. Teaching in Lampang began on 27 March 2002 as an extension classroom of MCU's Phrae Campus, held at Wat Bunyawat Wihan on Bunyawat Road in Mueang Lampang. The classroom was elevated to a full Buddhist college on 26 November 2012, published in the Royal Gazette (Vol. 130, Special Part 15 Ngor, p. 59) on 1 February 2013. In the 2017 academic year the college moved out of the city to a purpose-built site at 662 Moo 2, Phahonyothin Road, Sala Subdistrict, Ko Kha District.
It is worth knowing for lay residents that MCU colleges are not monastic-only: Nakhon Lampang opened its Buddhist Studies degree to lay students in 2007 and its Political Science degree to lay students in 2009. It now awards the Bachelor of Arts in Buddhist Studies and the Bachelor of Political Science, with master's degrees in both, plus certificates in Lanna language, Sangha administration and insight meditation.
