MCU is one of Thailand's two national Buddhist universities -- a legal entity and an autonomous state university under the Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University Act, published in the Royal Gazette on 1 October 1997. Its Nakhon Si Thammarat campus traces back to the Southern Sangha College founded by the southern monastic community in 1970, and was authorised to teach at bachelor's level on 7 May 1985, when a first cohort of 35 monks enrolled in Buddhist Studies.
The campus began at Wat Chaeng Worawihan on Ratchadamnoen Road in Tha Wang, moved to a donated site at Ban Bang Saphan in Bang Chak Subdistrict in 2007, and since 1 October 2009 has taught at 3/3 Moo 5, Mamuang Song Ton Subdistrict, Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat -- the former Sri Sophon College buildings, donated to the university. Its published teaching staff cover Buddhist Studies, Education (Social Studies and English Language Teaching), Political Science and Law.
It is also building again: the campus's 2026 procurement notices award construction of a multipurpose building group and a boundary sign at Ban Sakhu Nuea, Chang Sai Subdistrict, Phra Phrom District -- a new site south of the city that is worth knowing about if you are taking a long lease near it.
