Cost of living in Pattani.

Pattani is cheap, and the two numbers that explain it are the statutory minimum wage of ฿337 a day — the lowest band in Thailand, shared only with Yala and Narathiwat — and a poverty rate of 25.39 per cent, third-highest of the 77 provinces. Here are the numbers we could verify, the ones we deliberately left blank, and why both matter.

Rent: ฿2,300–4,900 for an advertised apartment

RentHub's Pattani province index displayed sixteen advertised long-stay buildings in August 2026 at ฿600 to ฿5,500 a month. The bottom of that range is a single dormitory-style room and should not be treated as a market floor; strip it out and the working band is roughly ฿2,300 to ฿4,900. Two important qualifications. These are advertised asking prices on one portal, not transacted rents. And they describe one district of twelve — the portal's own district facet read Muang Pattani (15) with no other district appearing at all, and every listing in the province is tagged to Prince of Songkla University's Pattani campus. Outside the capital district there is no published price series to budget against, and what exists is houses and rooms let directly by owners. Ajarn.com's resident-written guide, updated February 2026, gives no figures but confirms the shape: rent for a basic apartment or small house is reasonable, and a teacher's salary goes a long way if you live simply.

Wages

฿337 a day — the floor of the whole country, and it is here

Until this revision no BAANLYY page about Pattani carried a wage figure, which was an odd hole in a guide whose central claim is that the province is cheap. Here it is. The Wage Committee's Announcement No. 14, signed 17 June 2025 and in force from 1 July 2025, sets seventeen bands across Thailand, from ฿400 a day at the top to ฿337 a day at the bottom — and the bottom band has exactly three provinces in it: Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. There is no province in Thailand where the statutory minimum is lower, because there is no band below this one.

Two comparisons make it concrete. Against the ฿400 top band — Bangkok, Phuket, Chonburi, Rayong, Chachoengsao and Ko Samui — a full-time Pattani minimum is ฿63 a day lower, which is to say the top rate is about 18.7 per cent above the rate here. And against the neighbour: cross the boundary into Songkhla and the floor is ฿352, but in Hat Yai district specifically it is ฿380, a step of ฿43 or roughly 12.8 per cent. That is not an abstract border. Hat Yai is the same 108 kilometres this guide already sends you for a specialist hospital, an international school and an airport — the town that supplies everything Pattani does not also pays its workers a seventh more, and both facts describe the same gradient.

Set against housing, ฿337 a day worked six days a week is roughly ฿8,800 a month before anything else, so the ฿2,300–4,900 advertised rent band above is somewhere between a quarter and well over half of a full-time minimum-wage month. That is the arithmetic behind the poverty rate in the next section, and it is why a foreign salary stretches so far here. One qualification that cuts the other way: the same announcement sets ฿400 nationwide for licensed class 2, 3 and 4 hotels and for licensed entertainment venues, regardless of province — so those two categories of employer owe ฿400 in Pattani too. In a province with no large hotel sector and a conservative public culture, that provision touches very few people, but it is the law and it is worth knowing if you are hiring.

Incomes

The poverty rate is the number that explains everything else

NESDC's 2024 poverty report puts Pattani at 25.39 per cent, the third-highest rate of Thailand's 77 provinces — behind Mae Hong Son at 25.69 and Yala at 25.41, ahead of Narathiwat at 21.07 — measured against a national poverty line of ฿3,078 per person per month. Reporting on that release noted the province has been among the country's poorest five for at least fifteen consecutive years, which makes it a structural position rather than a bad year. The 2022 Human Achievement Index gives Pattani 0.6149, ranked 70th of 77, in the low band. If you arrive on a foreign salary or pension, that combination is what makes the province inexpensive — and it is also a description of real hardship for most of the people around you. A cost-of-living page that gave you the first half without the second would be selling something.

Why the gross-provincial-product line is blank. Most BAANLYY province pages carry a GPP figure and a per-head number. This one does not, on purpose. The only per-capita economic claim we surfaced for Pattani came from an AI-generated wiki with no primary source behind it, and we could not open an NESDC provincial-accounts page giving a baht figure and a rank. We would rather show you a hole than a number we cannot stand behind — and if you find yourself reading a Pattani GPP figure elsewhere, check what is actually behind it.

The economy

Fish, rubber, halal food and the public sector

The concrete sectoral fact we could source is fisheries: the number of fisheries workers in Pattani exceeded 80,000 as of 2019, along 170 kilometres of Gulf coast, and Pattani is the only province in Thailand where the Ministry of Agriculture prohibits trawlers and destructive fishing nets within four nautical miles of the shore — a protection that exists because so many households here fish from small boats rather than from company vessels. The provincial motto calls Pattani an excellent halal centre, and halal food processing is the industry most associated with it. Inland, Yarang, Mayo and Thung Yang Daeng are rubber, orchard and paddy country. Above all that sits the public sector: the provincial administration, the hospital, the university and a substantial security presence. On the investment side, the Triangle of Stability, Prosperity and Sustainability project named Nong Chik district as one of three pilot model cities, alongside Betong in Yala and the Chana–Sabayoi area of Songkhla; the page we could open for it dates from 2017 and its 2026 status is unconfirmed.

FAQ

Pattani cost of living FAQ

How much do you need to live in Pattani?

Less than almost anywhere else in Thailand, on the evidence we could verify — but we will give you the components rather than a single confident monthly figure we cannot stand behind. Housing: the advertised long-stay range on the one portal we could bound to the province was ฿600 to ฿5,500 a month across sixteen buildings, with the working band ฿2,300 to ฿4,900 and the ฿600–1,200 floor being a dormitory-style room rather than an apartment. Food: Ajarn.com's resident-written region guide, updated 7 February 2026, says local food is cheap and that if you live simply on a teacher's salary Pattani is relatively easy on the wallet. Transport: budget for a motorbike, because the same guide says the motorbike is king, taxis are rare and ride-hailing is unreliable in the evenings. Healthcare: the state general hospital plus a thirty-bed private hospital in the province, with anything specialist meaning a 108-kilometre drive to Hat Yai — which is a real travel cost, not a footnote.

What is the minimum wage in Pattani?

฿337 a day, and that is the lowest statutory rate in Thailand. The Wage Committee's Announcement No. 14, signed 17 June 2025 and effective from 1 July 2025, divides the country into seventeen bands running from ฿400 down to ฿337, and the ฿337 band contains only Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. Nothing sits below it. For scale: the ฿400 top band covers Bangkok, Phuket, Chonburi, Rayong, Chachoengsao and Ko Samui, so the national maximum is about 18.7 per cent above the rate here. The nearest step up is next door — Songkhla is ฿352, and Hat Yai district on its own is ฿380, a ฿43 or roughly 12.8 per cent jump across one provincial boundary, in the exact town this guide sends you to for a specialist hospital, an international school and a flight. Worked six days a week, ฿337 a day is about ฿8,800 a month, against an advertised rent band of ฿2,300–4,900. Two riders. First, the same announcement sets ฿400 nationwide for licensed class 2, 3 and 4 hotels and for licensed entertainment venues irrespective of province, so those employers owe ฿400 in Pattani as well. Second, a statutory floor is a floor, not an average, and it says nothing about the very large share of work here that is self-employed fishing, smallholder rubber and family agriculture rather than waged employment at all.

Why is Pattani so cheap?

Because incomes are low, and this is the part of a cost-of-living page that usually gets skipped. The statutory floor is the cleanest single indicator: ฿337 a day under Wage Committee Announcement No. 14, the bottom of Thailand's seventeen bands, shared only with Yala and Narathiwat. The National Economic and Social Development Council's 2024 poverty report put Pattani's poverty rate at 25.39 per cent — third-highest of Thailand's 77 provinces, behind Mae Hong Son at 25.69 and Yala at 25.41, and ahead of Narathiwat at 21.07 — measured against a national poverty line of ฿3,078 per person per month. Reporting on that release noted that Mae Hong Son and Pattani have ranked among the country's five poorest provinces for at least fifteen consecutive years, which makes this structural rather than cyclical. The 2022 Human Achievement Index scores the province 0.6149 and ranks it 70th of 77, in the 'low' band. A foreign salary or pension goes a very long way here; that is the flip side of a number that describes real hardship for most of the people around you, and a guide that presented the first without the second would be selling something.

Why is there no GPP figure on this page?

Because we could not verify one and we would rather leave a hole than fill it. The only per-capita economic claim we surfaced for Pattani came from an AI-generated wiki with no primary source behind it, and we could not open an NESDC provincial-accounts page giving a baht figure and a national rank. Most BAANLYY province pages carry a gross provincial product line; this one does not, deliberately. What we do publish for the province's economy is what we could source: the poverty rate and its national rank from NESDC via reporting we opened, the Human Achievement Index score and rank, and one concrete sectoral fact — that the number of fisheries workers in Pattani exceeded 80,000 as of 2019, and that Pattani is the only province in Thailand where the Ministry of Agriculture prohibits trawlers and destructive nets within four nautical miles of the shore.

What does the economy actually run on?

Fishing, agriculture and halal food, plus the public sector. The fisheries figure is the concrete one: over 80,000 people working in the sector as of 2019, on 170 kilometres of Gulf coast, with a four-nautical-mile trawler ban unique in Thailand that exists precisely because so many households fish from small boats. The provincial motto names the province an 'excellent halal centre', and halal food processing is the industry most often associated with it. Inland, the districts around Yarang, Mayo and Thung Yang Daeng are rubber, orchard and paddy. On top of that sits the public sector: the provincial administration, the general hospital, the university campus and — a Deep South reality — a substantial security presence. The Triangle of Stability, Prosperity and Sustainability project named Nong Chik district as one of three pilot model cities alongside Betong in Yala and the Chana–Sabayoi area of Songkhla, intended to draw private investment in; the source we could open for it dates from 2017 and we could not verify its 2026 status.

Are utilities, internet and everyday costs different in the Deep South?

Not materially on the tariffs, which are national — the Provincial Electricity Authority and Provincial Waterworks Authority set the same structures across the country, and mobile and fibre pricing is national too. Where the Deep South differs is in what you cannot buy locally rather than in what things cost. There is no large shopping mall of the kind Hat Yai has, no international-brand private hospital, no international school and no commercial airport, so a share of your budget quietly becomes travel: the 108-kilometre run to Hat Yai for specialist care, for airport departures and for anything the local market does not carry. Budget for that trip as a recurring line rather than an occasional one. On alcohol we make no claim beyond national law — we found no Pattani-specific rule — but fewer venues sell it and the public culture is more conservative in a province that is roughly 88 per cent Muslim, so it is a smaller part of most residents' spending here than elsewhere in Thailand.
