Overview

Chalong is southern Phuket's everyday hub — the place the rest of the south passes through. It is built around Chalong Pier (the launch point for island-hopping and dive boats), the Chalong Circle road junction, and a dense cluster of supermarkets, hardware and home stores, gyms, fitness and Muay Thai camps, clinics and the landmark Wat Chalong temple. It is more functional than scenic: Chalong Bay itself is a working anchorage rather than a swimming beach.

That practicality is exactly why long-stay residents like it. Rents and villa prices are among the best value on the island, the road network puts Rawai, Nai Harn, Kata and Phuket Town all within fifteen to twenty-five minutes, and the wellness and fitness scene is the strongest in the south. Stock is a mix of affordable low-rise condos, townhouses and pool villas in the surrounding hills and moo-baan estates.

Getting around

Connections

Phuket International Airport (HKT) (~45-55 min by road) · Phuket Town (~20 min) · Rawai / Nai Harn (~10-15 min south) · Chalong Pier (island-hop & dive boats)

Chalong sits at the centre of the southern road network, about 45-55 minutes from the airport and roughly 20 minutes from Phuket Town, with Rawai, Nai Harn and Kata all 10-25 minutes away. There is no rail on the island, so residents run a scooter or car; the Chalong Circle is the main junction and a known traffic pinch-point at peak times.

FAQ

Chalong — frequently asked questions

Why do expats choose Chalong?

Chalong offers the south's best value rents and villas, the strongest fitness and Muay Thai scene on the island, and a central location with beaches, Phuket Town and the piers all close. It's practical rather than scenic — a place to live and train, not a postcard beach.

Does Chalong have a swimming beach?

Not really — Chalong Bay is a working anchorage for dive and island-hopping boats. For swimming, residents head 10-15 minutes south to Rawai's nearby beaches, Nai Harn or Friendship Beach.

How much is rent in Chalong?

Indicative long-term rents are about THB 8,000-15,000 for a studio, THB 12,000-25,000 for a one-bedroom and THB 20,000-42,000 for a two-bedroom, while two-to-three-bed pool villas commonly run THB 35,000-80,000 — among the best value on Phuket.

Is Chalong good for fitness and wellness?

Yes — Chalong has the densest concentration of gyms, CrossFit boxes, Muay Thai camps and wellness studios in southern Phuket, which is a big draw for long-stay fitness and digital-nomad residents.
