Overview

Kata is the easygoing alternative to Patong, a short drive south on the west coast. It pairs a pretty main beach with the smaller, calmer Kata Noi around the headland, a walkable low-rise village of cafés and dive shops, and enough restaurants and bars to stay lively without being raucous. It is a long-standing favourite of families, returning holidaymakers and surfers who come for the May-October swell.

For renters, Kata offers a mix of resort condos, low-rise apartments and hillside units with sea glimpses, at prices a notch above Karon and well below the northern luxury beaches. The area is quieter at night than Patong but still has a proper village centre, which makes it one of the more balanced west-coast bases for a longer stay.

Getting around

Connections

Phuket International Airport (HKT) (~50-60 min by road) · Patong (~20 min north) · Phuket Town (~30-40 min) · Grab / Bolt, taxis, songthaew

Kata is near the south-west tip of the island, so it is one of the farther beaches from the airport (50-60 minutes). Patong is about 20 minutes north over the coast road and Phuket Town 30-40 minutes east. With no rail on Phuket, a scooter or car makes daily life far easier here.

FAQ

Kata — frequently asked questions

Is Kata good for families?

Yes. Kata is one of Phuket's most family-friendly west-coast beaches, with a calmer atmosphere than Patong, the sheltered Kata Noi bay, a walkable village and easy access to surf lessons and day activities.

How much is rent in Kata?

Indicative long-term condo rents are about THB 14,000-25,000 for a studio, THB 20,000-40,000 for a one-bedroom and THB 35,000-70,000 for a two-bedroom, with sea-view units higher. Expect a premium in the November-March high season.

Is Kata good for surfing?

Kata is one of Phuket's main surf beaches during the southwest-monsoon season from roughly May to October, when the swell builds. Several surf schools and board-rental shops operate in the village.

How far is Kata from the airport?

About 50-60 minutes by road — Kata is near the island's south-west tip, so it is one of the longer airport transfers on Phuket.
