The headline, stated plainly: we could not verify a single international-curriculum school anywhere in Samut Songkhram, and — having gone back and checked the narrower question separately — we could not verify an English Program or Mini English Program track at the provincial secondary school either. Those are two different claims and both now point the same way. It remains an absence of evidence rather than proof of absence, but it is a searched-for absence, checked against the school's own published intake rather than against a directory. If an English-medium curriculum is a requirement for your household, settle the schooling question before anything else about this province.

Higher education

Two degree-granting institutions, not one

The best-known is a campus of Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University, whose main site is in Dusit in Bangkok. Its address, published on the university's own campus directory, is 111/1-3 Moo 7, tambon Bang Kaeo, Mueang Samut Songkhram. Two things follow from that page. First, it settles the district: the capital district, stated rather than inferred. Second, it settles the naming — SSRU lists two campuses, Nakhon Pathom and Samut Songkhram, and two education centres, Ranong and Udon Thani. This one is a campus, which is why older material calling it the Samut Songkhram Education Centre reads as a contradiction: it is a former name, not an ambiguity. The campus has its own director, website, steering committee and administrative divisions, and its navigation names two academic units — the College of Allied Health Sciences and the College of Nursing and Health — alongside a Suan Sunandha Thai Herbal Medicine Learning and Conservation Centre. Its published contact number is 034-773902.

The second one is the fact most guides to this province miss, and we missed it too until we stopped reading portals and opened the institution's own site. The Institute of Vocational Education Central Region 5 — the degree-awarding body that grants the Bachelor of Technology across Samut Songkhram, Samut Sakhon, Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan — is headquartered in Samut Songkhram, at 89 Moo 12, tambon Lat Yai, on 0 3471 1811. Two of its bachelor's programmes are taught in the province, at the technical college on the same site: Mould Technology and Digital Business Technology. For a province of 192,052 people that is a real and underadvertised asset, and it means the honest count of degree routes here is two institutions, not one.

Vocational

Samut Songkhram Technical College, from its own records

We previously named this college on the authority of a rental portal's education index, which is a weak source for an institution. Its own site is better and considerably more interesting. Samut Songkhram Technical College sits at 89 Moo 12, Ekkachai Road, tambon Lat Yai, Mueang Samut Songkhram, on 0-3471-1440, under the Office of the Vocational Education Commission. It opened on 18 April 1941 as the Samut Songkhram Carpentry School, teaching a two-year woodworking course out of two wooden buildings belonging to Satthasamut School inside Wat Ban Laem — the temple now known as Wat Phet Samut Worawihan. It bought its present site at Lat Yai — 42 rai and a bit — in 1958, laid the foundation stone that November, moved its students across in 1960, and took its current name on 1 April 1980. It has run dual-vocational (thawiphakhi) programmes since 1995.

It is also, on its own published record, unusually good at what it does. Its robotics teams have taken the national vocational robotics championship and its royal trophy four times, competing as the Hoi Lot — razor clam — team, named for the shellfish the province is known for. In 2015 two of its dual-vocational machine-shop students went to the WorldSkills competition in São Paulo and came back with a gold medal in CNC turning and an outstanding medal in automated manufacturing. The college was a royal-award school in 2013, and produced royal-award students again in 2023. If you are moving here with a teenager who is more interested in a workshop than a lecture theatre, this is the strongest single educational argument the province has.

The second is the Amphawa Industrial and Community Education College, also under the Office of the Vocational Education Commission, at 1/1 Moo 6, Rama II Road, tambon Phraek Nam Daeng, Amphawa 75110, on 0-3471-7375 or 0-3474-9140. That places it on the trunk road rather than in Amphawa's canal district, which matters if you are judging a commute from a rental.

We previously said there were two. There are three, and the one we had missed is the one most likely to be useful to somebody who has just moved here. Samutsongkhram Polytechnic College — วิทยาลัยสารพัดช่างสมุทรสงคราม, abbreviated วช.สส., and that is the college's own English rendering of its name — sits at 122 Moo 12, tambon Lat Yai, Mueang Samut Songkhram 75000, on 034-716343 (fax the same number, extension 123), at saraban@ssptc.ac.th. Its own institutional page gives its estate as 11 rai 1 ngan 12 square wa, its tree as the banyan and its colour as light purple. Note the address: the technical college is at 89 Moo 12 and the vocational institute's headquarters is at 89 Moo 12 as well — all three sit in the same moo of the same tambon, which makes Lat Yai, and not the town centre, the province's actual education quarter. We found the college by reading a sister college's own sidebar rather than any directory: SSPTC's site links out to the Technical College and to Amphawa, and those three links are the provincial vocational family stated by one of its own members.

What makes it worth a paragraph rather than a line is what a sarapat chang college is for. Its published identity statement is not a mission-statement flourish but an accurate job description: “an institution for vocational training”, whose stated character is “train a trade, serve the community”. Alongside the usual ปวช. departments it names — Marketing, Automotive, Business Computing and Electronics — it runs a standing programme of short vocational courses (หลักสูตรระยะสั้น) open to the general public, with its own online application form and named subject pages for cookery, singing and computing. It also publishes ปวส. application and credit-transfer paperwork. For an arriving foreign resident in a province with no international school and no English-medium state track, a state college running short, cheap, publicly-open practical courses a few minutes from the town is a genuinely useful thing to know exists — and it was in none of our files until now. One thing we could not settle: the college publishes its founding order as a downloadable PDF rather than as text, so we have its address, estate and programmes but not its establishment date, and we are not going to infer one.

All three colleges sit under the provincial vocational education office for Samut Songkhram; between them and the degree-awarding institute headquartered at Lat Yai, the vocational route in this province is deeper than the academic one.

Schools

The state system, from a teacher's point of view

The most useful account we could open is Ajarn.com's Samut Songkhram region guide, written and edited by foreign teachers who live in the province and last updated 8 January 2026. Its summary: there are plenty of schools in Samut Songkhram, but only a small number employ foreign English teachers, and most of those positions are filled by Filipino teachers rather than native speakers. Several language centres operate in the province, many run by Thai teachers who also work in local schools, and it is not unusual for students to travel into Bangkok for extra English classes. One detail is worth flagging for anyone considering a teaching post here: some schools provide free accommodation for foreign teachers, which in a province with only ten advertised long-stay buildings is a genuinely material benefit. Education across the province employs 3,775 people, 3.6 per cent of the workforce, on 3.6 per cent of provincial output.

That account is about who teaches. The question a relocating parent actually asks is narrower — can my child be taught in English anywhere in this province? — so we went to the provincial secondary school and read its published intake rather than a directory. Satthasamut School, at 122 Ekkachai Road, tambon Mae Klong, on 0-3471-1221, runs its admissions through its own microsite. The special-classroom tracks it advertises are: at M.1, SMTE, Advanced Program (AP) and the IPST programme; at M.4, SMTE. A Thai tutoring guide — not the school, and we flag the difference — puts term fees at roughly ฿4,500–฿5,700 for a special classroom against ฿3,100 for a mainstream lower-secondary place, and about ฿5,600 against ฿3,800 at upper-secondary. Treat those as indicative orders of magnitude and confirm them with the school.

What that list does not contain is an English Program or a Mini English Program — the two labels the Ministry uses for state provision actually delivered in English. All three named tracks are science, mathematics and academic-enrichment streams. We are deliberately not going further than that: “Advanced Program” is a name that invites an assumption about language of instruction, the school's published material does not state one, and we would rather leave the question open than answer it for you. Ask the academic office directly. What we can say with the evidence in hand is that the province has neither a verifiable international school nor a verifiable EP/MEP state track, and that those are two separate checks that happen to have come back the same way.

Is there an international school in Samut Songkhram?

Not that we could find, and we searched specifically for one. But "no international school" and "no English-medium classroom" are two different claims, so we went and checked the second one at the province's flagship school. Satthasamut School, the provincial secondary school, publishes its special-classroom intake on its own admissions channel: at M.1 the tracks are SMTE, Advanced Program (AP) and the IPST programme, and at M.4 the track is SMTE. None of those three is an English Program (EP) or Mini English Program (MEP) — the two labels the Ministry uses for genuinely English-medium state provision. So the honest statement is stronger and narrower than the usual one: the province appears to have neither an international school nor an EP/MEP state track. What language AP is actually delivered in is a question the school's own published material does not answer, and we are not going to guess at it — ask the academic office on 0-3471-1221 before you plan around it. If an English-medium curriculum is a requirement for your family, treat this province as a place you commute from rather than a place you school in: Bangkok is 63 kilometres up Rama II Road, and Samut Sakhon and Nakhon Pathom are closer still.

More than we previously credited the province with, and we have had to correct our own count twice — once upward on universities, once upward on colleges. Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University runs a Samut Songkhram campus whose address, published on the university's own campus directory, is 111/1-3 Moo 7, tambon Bang Kaeo, Mueang Samut Songkhram — so the capital district, confirmed rather than inferred. It is a full campus (witthayakhet), not an education centre: SSRU operates two campuses, Nakhon Pathom and Samut Songkhram, and two education centres, in Ranong and Udon Thani, which is why older material calls this one the Samut Songkhram Education Centre. What are the state schools like?

Ordinary Thai provincial schools, with the usual pattern for a small province and one useful quirk. The expat teachers' guide records that there are plenty of schools in Samut Songkhram but only a small number employ foreign English teachers, and that most of those positions are held by Filipino teachers. How does the province support a nursing and allied-health campus?

The same way a lot of Thai provinces do: a Rajabhat campus placed to serve a regional need rather than a local student market. Samut Songkhram's own health system employs 2,308 people and runs three hospitals with 405 beds between them, which is not enough to absorb a nursing school's output on its own — but the campus sits an hour from Bangkok and adjacent to Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi and Samut Sakhon, all of which have larger hospital systems. For a resident, the practical effect is that the province has a young student population and the services that follow one, concentrated near the campus, in a province whose overall population has been falling since 1990.

Where do expat families actually send their children?

We do not have a verified answer, and rather than invent one we will set out the choices honestly. Inside the province: Thai state schools and a small number of private Thai schools, plus language centres for supplementary English. Outside: Bangkok, 63 kilometres up Rama II Road, which has the largest concentration of international schools in Thailand, and the western Bangkok metropolitan fringe — Samut Sakhon and Nakhon Pathom — which is closer. The teachers' guide records that local students travel into Bangkok for extra English, so the commute is a normal part of life here rather than an exotic option. Anyone weighing this province with school-age children should treat the schooling question as the decisive one and settle it before anything else.
