Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Sanpasithiprasong at a glance

Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Sanpasithiprasong is Ubon Ratchathani's public nursing school, founded in May 1955 and sitting at 224 Phonphaen Road in the city centre, next to the provincial hospital whose royal name it shares (the hospital is usually romanised Sappasitthiprasong on English-language maps -- same name, different transliteration).

It received the royal name Boromarajonani from HRH the Princess Mother in 1994, but that was a name grant, not a change of legal status. The legal change came with the Praboromarajchanok Institute Act, published in the Royal Gazette on 5 April 2019, which made the institute the first higher-education body under the Ministry of Public Health, a juristic person awarding degrees in nursing, public health and allied health. Anything written about this college before April 2019 describes a different legal animal.

In practice that means the Bachelor of Nursing Science taught here is conferred by the Faculty of Nursing of the Praboromarajchanok Institute, not by the college under its own name -- which is exactly why the college is invisible in most lists of Ubon Ratchathani universities. The college also runs specialist post-registration nursing training, including a five-month family nurse practitioner course.

Notable facts

• Founded May 1955; Ubon Ratchathani's public nursing college, in the city centre rather than out on the ring road.
• Royally granted the name Boromarajonani by HRH the Princess Mother in 1994 -- a name grant, distinct from any change of legal status.
• The Praboromarajchanok Institute Act was published in the Royal Gazette on 5 April 2019, making the institute the first higher-education institution under the Ministry of Public Health.
• The Bachelor of Nursing Science is conferred by the institute's Faculty of Nursing, which is why the college rarely appears in university directories.
