Ubon Ratchathani University at a glance
Ubon Ratchathani University was established in September 1987 as a regional campus of Khon Kaen University, then conferred independent university status by royal charter on 29 July 1990 -- the 19th public university under Thailand's then Ministry of University Affairs. It was created to bring higher education to the lower northeastern region and the Mekong border area around Ubon Ratchathani.
The main campus sits on Sathonlamark Road (also written the Warin-Det Udom Road) in Mueang Si Khai subdistrict, Warin Chamrap, roughly 15 km south of Ubon Ratchathani city on a rural site of about 5,228 rai. UBU has grown into a comprehensive research university spanning science, engineering, agriculture, liberal arts, medicine, pharmacy, law, business and nursing, and it anchors the student rental market BAANLYY covers as the University District.
UBU is not the only degree-awarding campus in Mueang Si Khai. The Sirindhorn College of Public Health sits on the same subdistrict at km 11 of the Ubon-Det Udom road, and in 1998 the two institutions jointly ran a Bachelor of Science in Public Health -- worth knowing if you are comparing student housing on this side of the Mun River.
