What this is & why you'd need it

Some foreigners living in or retiring to Thailand want to give back, through donations, volunteering or a gift in a will. Charities and foundations run community, education, animal and elder-support projects, and a few publish reports on their work. BAANLYY lists these organisations: it does not collect donations, has not audited any organisation listed here, and is not a party to any gift or volunteering arrangement. What a listing says is the organisation's own description, so check it directly before you give.

What to look for

Questions to ask before you commit

Q. What is your registered name and how are you registered in Thailand?
Q. How are donations used, and can I see a recent report?
Q. Will I get a receipt, and is a gift deductible in my country or in Thailand?
Q. If I want to volunteer, what does the role involve and what does it cost me?

Red flags

Walk away if you see…
  • A request to pay into a personal account
  • Pressure to give straight away, or emotional urgency with no detail
  • No registered name or address, or details that change between pages
  • Promises about tax savings from a gift. Ask your own adviser

What it typically costs

Giving is voluntary and there is no standard amount. Volunteering schemes can charge fees for food, lodging or placement, so ask what is covered before you commit.
