Private · Affiliated Buddhist college (Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University) · founded 2002 · Hat Yai district
Mahapanya Vidayalai was founded at the initiative of the head of the Anam Nikaya -- Thailand's Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist order -- who took the proposal to the rector of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University (MCU); the college's name was bestowed by Somdet Phra Phutthachan (Kiao Upaseno). MCU's rector and academic board reviewed its Bachelor of Arts curriculum in Mahayana Studies against the national undergraduate structure, and teaching began on 10 June 2002 with twenty-five students -- monks and nuns from Taiwan and Singapore alongside Thai monks -- taught by Indian, Singaporean, Sri Lankan and Filipino teachers as well as Thai monastic and lay staff.
The college sits at 635/1 Thamnoonvithi Road, in the middle of Hat Yai rather than on the city's edge, and its stated purpose is to teach monks and novices of every school and nationality along with interested laymen. Its degree programme in Mahayana Studies is an international programme taught in English -- the only English-medium degree teaching BAANLYY has verified inside Hat Yai district.
