Every institution on the island
Ordered by what they award, not by prominence. The two SRU units confer bachelor's degrees; the two vocational colleges award the Vocational Certificate (ปวช.) and, at the state college, the High Vocational Certificate (ปวส.) — real, employable qualifications, but not degrees.
What the island does not have
- No university of its own. Every degree read on Samui is conferred by Suratthani Rajabhat University on the mainland. There is no institution headquartered on the island, and nothing resembling a general academic faculty — the teaching here is hospitality, culinary and tourism, built around the island economy.
- No Ramkhamhaeng campus anywhere in Surat Thani province. Thailand's open-admission university is the usual fallback for working adults, and it is worth being precise: Ramkhamhaeng's own register lists 23 regional campuses, of which the southern ones are Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phang Nga, Songkhla and Trang. Surat Thani appears only on its separate list of 41 regional examination centres. An exam centre is where you sit papers, not where you study — so an RU degree from Samui is a distance-learning arrangement, not a local campus.
- No medical, engineering or law faculty, and no international university branch. Families needing those are looking at the mainland or Bangkok.
Where Samui students go for other degrees
For anything outside hospitality and culinary arts, the realistic options are on the Surat Thani mainland — SRU's main campus at Khun Thale, and Prince of Songkla University's Surat Thani campus — reached by a short flight or the car ferry. That crossing is exactly the problem the island's state vocational college was created to solve: when the establishment agreement was signed in 2013, the municipality's case was that around a thousand Samui students finished secondary school each year and many had to leave the island to carry on.
