Overview

Chaweng is Koh Samui's main beach and commercial centre - a long arc of white sand on the east coast backed by the island's densest concentration of hotels, condos, restaurants, bars and shopping, with the Central Festival mall and the airport both close by. It is the default base for first-time arrivals and anyone who wants everything walkable rather than a quiet retreat.

The beach road and the parallel main road carry most of Samui's nightlife and dining, while the quieter Chaweng Noi cove to the south and the hillsides inland hold sea-view condos and villas. Stock here is the most liquid on the island, running from affordable studios aimed at long-stay renters and remote workers to high-end beachfront residences.

FAQ

Chaweng — frequently asked questions

Is Chaweng a good place to live in Koh Samui?

It is the best base if you value convenience and social life over quiet. Chaweng has the island's main beach, its biggest mall, the widest choice of restaurants and nightlife, the deepest condo supply and the shortest hop to the airport. Those wanting calm usually prefer Maenam, Bophut or the west coast.

How much is rent in Chaweng?

Indicatively, studios run about THB 9,000-16,000 a month, one-bedrooms THB 14,000-28,000 and two-bedrooms THB 28,000-55,000, with beachfront and pool villas climbing well above that. Older inland blocks are cheapest; new sea-view residences the most expensive.

Do you need a scooter in Chaweng?

Chaweng is the most walkable part of Samui, but the island has no public transport beyond songthaews, so most residents still use a scooter or ride-hailing (Grab, Bolt) to reach other beaches. Within Chaweng itself you can largely get by on foot.
