Overview

Hua Thanon is a traditional fishing village on the south-east coast, immediately south of Lamai, and is often called the most authentic town on Koh Samui. Brightly painted wooden fishing boats line the shore, a long-established Muslim community gives the town a distinct character, and its fresh market is one of the best places on the island to buy seafood straight off the boats.

This is a place to live like a local rather than a tourist - cheap Thai and halal food, everyday shops and genuine village life, with Lamai's beach, bars and amenities only a few minutes north. Rental stock is modest and inexpensive, mostly local houses, townhouses and small apartments, making it one of the lowest-cost bases on the island.

FAQ

Hua Thanon — frequently asked questions

Is Hua Thanon a good place to live in Koh Samui?

It is ideal if you want authentic, low-cost local living rather than a resort beach. Hua Thanon is a working fishing village with a famous seafood market and some of the lowest rents on the island, and Lamai's beach and amenities are only minutes away. It is not the place for nightlife or a swimming beach on the doorstep.

How much is rent in Hua Thanon?

Hua Thanon is one of the cheapest areas on Samui. Indicatively, studios run about THB 6,000-11,000 a month, one-bedrooms THB 9,000-17,000 and two-bedrooms THB 17,000-33,000. Most stock is local houses and small apartments, so modern condos are scarce.

What is Hua Thanon known for?

It is best known as Koh Samui's traditional fishing village and for its fresh market, where the day's catch is sold straight from the boats. It also has a long-standing Muslim community, giving it a different character and food scene from the island's tourist towns.
