Overview

Plai Laem is a small, affluent cape on Koh Samui's north-east corner, wrapped around the striking Wat Plai Laem temple with its white Guanyin statue and reflecting lake. It sits between Choeng Mon and Bang Rak, a five to ten minute drive from Samui International Airport, and is best known for hillside villas and low-density residences with sea and island views rather than a busy beach strip.

This is a place people choose for calm and privacy while staying close to the airport and to Bophut's dining. There is little nightlife and few shops in the immediate area, so residents rely on a scooter or car to reach Chaweng, Bophut and Fisherman's Village. Rental stock skews toward pool villas and a smaller number of boutique sea-view condos.

FAQ

Plai Laem — frequently asked questions

Is Plai Laem a good place to live in Koh Samui?

Yes, if you want quiet, scenery and quick airport access rather than nightlife. Plai Laem is an upmarket, low-density cape built around Wat Plai Laem, with sea-view villas and calm coves. You will need a scooter or car, and most dining and shopping is a short drive away in Bophut or Chaweng.

How much is rent in Plai Laem?

Indicatively, studios run about THB 10,000-17,000 a month, one-bedrooms THB 15,000-30,000 and two-bedrooms THB 30,000-60,000, with sea-view pool villas well above that. Supply is villa-heavy, so smaller budget units are limited.

How far is Plai Laem from the airport?

Very close - roughly five to ten minutes by car to Samui International Airport, which makes it one of the most convenient areas on the island for frequent travellers while still being far quieter than Chaweng or Bophut.
