Things to do in Suphan Buri.

A UNESCO-recognised centenary market, the site of Thailand's most famous elephant duel, a Dvaravati ancient town, a lakeside aquarium — and the home of Thai country music.

Share

Suphan Buri is a domestic destination rather than an international one, which is precisely its appeal — it is a province Thai families drive to for a weekend, and the attractions are built around that. Between a preserved century-old market town, one of the most storied battlefields in Thai history, a Dvaravati archaeological site with its own national museum, and a lakeside aquarium, there is more here than a day trip from Bangkok can hold.

Highlights

The best of Suphan Buri

Sam Chuk Centenary Market

A riverside Chinese-Thai market community of century-old wooden shophouses on the Tha Chin in Sam Chuk district, whose conservation won an Award of Merit in the 2009 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation. It is now one of central Thailand's best-known domestic weekend destinations — old shopfronts, riverside walkways, traditional sweets and a genuinely preserved streetscape rather than a rebuilt one.

Don Chedi Monument

In Don Chedi district northwest of the town, the monument and chedi commemorate the elephant duel of 1593 at Nong Sarai, when King Naresuan killed the Toungoo crown prince in single combat on elephant-back and secured Ayutthaya's independence. The duel appears on the provincial seal, and the site hosts a major memorial fair each January — check current dates before travelling.

U Thong ancient town & U Thong National Museum

About 30km southwest, U Thong is a moated Dvaravati-period settlement associated with the old Suphannaphum polity and with the name Suvarnabhumi — one of the deepest archaeological layers in central Thailand. The U Thong National Museum interprets the site and its finds, and the surrounding district holds further ancient remains against a backdrop of limestone hills toward Kanchanaburi.

Bueng Chawak Chaloem Phra Kiat

In Doem Bang Nang Buat district in the north of the province, Bueng Chawak is the region's big family attraction: an aquarium with a walk-through underwater tunnel, a zoo and gardens set on the lakeshore. It is a domestic-tourism anchor and by far the most popular day out in the province with Thai families.

Banharn-Jamsai Tower & the town centre

The 123-metre observation tower in the middle of Suphan Buri town is the province's most recognisable landmark and the clearest symbol of the public-works era under the late Banharn Silpa-archa. Around it, the compact town centre holds the City Pillar Shrine complex, the Suphanburi National Museum, riverside markets and Wat Pa Lelai Worawihan with its revered seated Luang Pho To Buddha image, a short way west of the centre.

Luk thung country

Suphan Buri is the heartland of luk thung, Thai country music, and is sometimes called the Nashville of Thailand. The genre's greatest star, Pumpuang Duangjan, is buried in the province, and her memorial remains a place of pilgrimage for Thai visitors. If you want to understand the province's cultural weight in Thailand, this — as much as the temples — is why.

FAQ

Things-to-do questions

What is Suphan Buri famous for?

Rice, history and country music. It holds the U Thong Dvaravati ancient town associated with the name Suvarnabhumi and the Don Chedi monument marking King Naresuan's 1593 elephant duel; the Sam Chuk centenary market won a 2009 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award of Merit; and it is the heartland of luk thung, Thai country music. It is also strongly associated with the late prime minister Banharn Silpa-archa, whose public works reshaped the town.

Is Suphan Buri worth visiting?

Yes, particularly as a weekend from Bangkok — it is only about 101km away and it is a genuinely Thai destination rather than an international one. Sam Chuk market, the Don Chedi monument, U Thong's museum and archaeology, and Bueng Chawak's aquarium make a full two-day itinerary, and the food is excellent.

What day trips can you do from Suphan Buri?

Within the province: Sam Chuk and Bueng Chawak to the north, Don Chedi to the northwest, U Thong to the southwest. Beyond it, Kanchanaburi lies west past the U Thong hills, Ayutthaya east via Highway 329, and Nakhon Pathom south on Highway 321 — all comfortable day trips by car.

When is the Don Chedi memorial fair?

The Don Chedi memorial commemorating King Naresuan's elephant duel is traditionally held in January at the monument site in Don Chedi district, with historical re-enactments and a fair. Exact dates shift year to year — check with the Tourism Authority of Thailand or the provincial administration before planning a trip around it.
