How to choose where to live in Surat Thani.

Not a list of neighborhoods — a decision guide. Who you are (retiree, remote worker, family, ferry commuter, budget renter) and whether you're basing yourself on the mainland at all, matters more than any single area's amenities. Here's how to think it through.

Two questions before you pick an area

Surat Thani doesn't organise itself around beaches or a rail-transit network like a resort city — it's the mainland gateway to the Samui archipelago, and most people who end up here are passing through, working, or deliberately choosing mainland prices over island life. Before picking a neighborhood, answer two questions: are you staying on the mainland, or is Surat Thani just a stop before Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao? And what matters more, walkability or budget? The answers point you to a cluster fast. For full profiles, rent ranges and photos of each area, see the complete Surat Thani areas guide — this page is the decision layer that sits above it.

01

Pick your area by who you are

Five common profiles cover most people who settle in Surat Thani. Find yours below — each links straight to the relevant area's full profile.

Retirees & long-stay visa holders

Ban Don & the Riverside, or Central Plaza & Talat Kaset

Retirees generally do better with walkable errands and nearby healthcare than with the cheapest possible rent. Ban Don keeps markets, riverside restaurants and daily life within a stroll; Central Plaza & Talat Kaset trades a little walkability for mall-level convenience and newer buildings. Both put you within a reasonable drive of Surat Thani's main hospitals.

Remote workers & digital nomads

Central Plaza & Talat Kaset

Surat Thani has no dedicated coworking scene to speak of, so proximity to reliable fibre internet, cafes and groceries matters more than a scenic address. The newer condo stock near Central Plaza tends to have the most consistent internet infrastructure, and many nomads treat the city as a low-cost, quiet mainland base between longer stints on Koh Samui or Koh Phangan.

Families

Central Plaza & Talat Kaset, or near Phun Phin for more space

Families weighing school runs and everyday groceries usually settle near Central Plaza for the convenience, or push out toward Phun Phin/the suburbs for a house with more room at a lower cost per square metre. Surat Thani's international-school options are limited compared to Bangkok, Phuket or Chiang Mai — most expat families here are on the mainland for work or transit reasons rather than for schooling, so confirm school logistics before committing to an area.

Ferry & logistics commuters

Don Sak & the Ferry Corridor, or the eastern edge of the city

If your work or routine runs through the Don Sak car-ferry piers — logistics, tourism operations, or simply frequent trips to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao — basing yourself toward Don Sak district itself cuts a roughly hour-long each-way drive out of your week. Expect houses and simple rentals rather than condo towers out here.

Budget-first renters

Near Phun Phin

Phun Phin district carries the lowest rents in the city, runs on the airport-road and railway-junction side of town, and suits anyone prioritising cost over walkable downtown amenities. It's also a practical base if you fly in and out of Surat Thani Airport (URT) or use the Southern Line railway regularly.

02

Mainland Surat Thani or one of the islands?

The choice most relocators actually wrestle with isn't Ban Don versus Central Plaza — it's whether to base themselves in Surat Thani at all, versus continuing to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. Surat Thani city runs meaningfully cheaper than any of the three islands, with a working provincial-town pace rather than a resort scene, and it's the practical choice for logistics, transport and mainland-business work, or for anyone drawn to Khao Sok National Park or the Suan Mokkh monastery rather than beach life. The islands offer beach living, larger international communities and (on Koh Samui) international schools, at a real cost premium. If you're not sure yet, Ban Don or Central Plaza & Talat Kaset make a sensible short-term landing base — both have easy access to the Don Sak ferry piers — while you decide.

FAQ

Choosing-your-area questions

Is it better to live in Surat Thani city or on Koh Samui?

It depends on why you're in the area. Surat Thani city offers mainland pricing — typically 30–50% cheaper rent than Koh Samui — a working provincial-town pace, and fast ferry access to the islands. Koh Samui offers beach living, a larger international community, and international schools, at a materially higher cost. Many long-stayers who work in logistics, transport or mainland business choose Surat Thani; those prioritising beach lifestyle or an established expat community choose Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao directly. See the Koh Samui hub for the island-side comparison.

How do retirees choose an area in Surat Thani?

Most retirees weigh walkability and proximity to healthcare above rent savings. Ban Don & the Riverside and Central Plaza & Talat Kaset both put groceries, restaurants and Surat Thani's main hospitals within a short drive or walk, which is why they're the two most common landing spots for retirees rather than the cheaper but more car-dependent Phun Phin or Don Sak areas.

Where do digital nomads and remote workers live in Surat Thani?

Most cluster near Central Plaza & Talat Kaset for the newer condo stock and more reliable home internet, using Surat Thani as a quiet, low-cost mainland base rather than a nomad hub in its own right — the larger remote-work communities in the region are on Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.

What's the cheapest way to live in Surat Thani?

Near Phun Phin consistently offers the lowest one-bedroom rents in the city, roughly THB 4,000–7,000, thanks to its distance from the riverside and mall cores. It trades some walkability and dining options for the lowest cost per month — see the full areas guide for the breakdown by district.

Do I need to decide between Surat Thani and the islands before I arrive?

No — many relocators use Surat Thani city as a short-term landing base (a few weeks to a month) to handle paperwork, banking and logistics, then decide between staying on the mainland or moving on to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao once they've seen both. Short leases are easy to find near Ban Don or Central Plaza for exactly this reason.
