Getting around Trang.

Trang town is compact and walkable, but its best-known assets — the Emerald Cave, Pak Meng beach and the outlying islands — sit well outside it. Here is how songthaews, motorbike taxis, Grab, a rental car or motorbike, Trang Airport, the railway station and the island boat piers actually fit together.

Overview

The short version

Trang has no rail transit or metro — songthaews and motorbike taxis cover the compact, walkable town centre cheaply, and Grab works there too, though its coverage thins fast once you leave town. Because Trang's biggest draws — the Emerald Cave, Pak Meng beach and the Trang islands — sit 30–40 minutes outside the centre, most residents end up renting or buying a motorbike or car. Trang Airport (TST) connects to Bangkok's Don Mueang in about an hour twenty, the Trang Railway Station runs two slower overnight trains a day, and boats to Koh Mook, Koh Kradan, Koh Ngai and Koh Libong leave from Pak Meng Pier, with Kuan Tung Ku and Kantang Pier adding further river and coastal links.

01

Songthaews & shared trucks

Songthaews — shared pickup trucks with bench seating — run loops around Trang town centre, linking the night market, clock tower roundabout, Wisetkul Road and the bus and railway stations, for a flat fare of roughly THB 10–20. They're the cheapest way to cover a short in-town hop, but coverage is limited to fixed routes within the town itself and thins out after dark.

02

Motorbike taxis

Riders in numbered vests wait at stands around the night market, the bus terminal and busy junctions in town, and are the fastest way to cover a short hop or the last kilometre to a soi address — typically THB 20–40 in town. There's no meter, so agree the fare before you get on.

03

Grab (ride-hailing)

Grab lists Trang within its Southern Thailand coverage area alongside Phuket, Krabi, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Hat Yai, but driver density is noticeably thinner than in the bigger tourist hubs. Expect workable coverage in Trang town itself and slower or unavailable pickups further out toward Pak Meng or Kantang. Bolt's presence in Trang is inconsistent; treat Grab as the more reliable app but not a guaranteed option at every hour.

04

Renting or buying a motorbike or car

Because Trang's best-known assets — the Emerald Cave, Pak Meng beach, the outlying islands and Kantang's riverside — sit well outside the town centre, most residents and long-stayers end up renting or buying their own transport. A motorbike rents for roughly THB 150–250 a day or THB 2,500–3,500 a month; a small car runs roughly THB 800–1,200 a day or THB 9,000–15,000 a month with insurance. Thailand drives on the left, and Trang's roads are generally well-paved with light traffic outside the town centre.

05

Trang Railway Station

Trang's Class 1 railway station sits a short ride from the town centre and is the southern terminus of a State Railway of Thailand line from Bangkok's Hua Lamphong. Two direct trains run each way daily — the fastest overnight service takes roughly 13 hours 40 minutes, with a second, slower train around 14–14.5 hours. It's a budget and sleeper-berth option rather than a fast one; flying is far quicker for a short trip to Bangkok.

06

Trang Airport (TST)

Trang Airport (TST) is about 7km from the town centre and serves a single domestic route — Trang to Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport — flown by Nok Air, Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air. A new domestic terminal opened in September 2025, adding capacity for the route. There are no direct international flights from Trang; overseas arrivals connect via Bangkok. A taxi or pre-arranged transfer from the airport to town takes roughly 10–15 minutes.

07

Intercity buses & minivans

Trang's bus terminal runs frequent minivan and coach services around the South: Hat Yai roughly hourly for about THB 110, Nakhon Si Thammarat hourly for about THB 120, Phuket roughly hourly for about THB 230, and Krabi every two hours. Overnight VIP coaches connect to Bangkok's southern bus terminals for travelers who prefer the road over the twice-daily train.

08

Boat piers to the Trang islands

Longtail and speedboats to Koh Mook, Koh Kradan, Koh Ngai and Koh Libong run year-round from Pak Meng Pier, roughly 40 minutes from Trang town, with joined speedboat services concentrated in the November–April high season and a thinner, wait-for-enough-passengers longtail schedule the rest of the year. Kuan Tung Ku and Kantang Pier, at the mouth of the Trang River, add further boat and ferry links, including some longer-haul connections toward Koh Lanta and Koh Libong's fishing communities.

09

Getting around Trang town itself

Trang town's core — the night market, clock tower roundabout and Wisetkul Road shophouse strip — is compact and walkable on foot once you're there. It's everything outside the town centre (the airport, the railway station, Kantang and especially Pak Meng and the islands) that calls for a songthaew, motorbike taxi, rental vehicle or pre-booked transfer.

FAQ

Trang transport FAQ

Does Trang have Grab or other ride-hailing apps?

Yes — Grab operates in Trang as part of its Southern Thailand coverage, but driver density is noticeably lower than in Phuket or Krabi. Expect reasonable availability in Trang town itself and slower or unavailable pickups further out, such as toward Pak Meng Pier.

How do I get from Trang Airport (TST) to town?

Trang Airport is about 7km from the town centre, roughly a 10–15 minute drive. A taxi or pre-arranged transfer is the simplest option, since ride-hailing pickups directly from the airport can be inconsistent.

How do I reach the Trang islands — Koh Mook, Koh Kradan and Koh Ngai?

Boats depart from Pak Meng Pier, about 40 minutes from Trang town, with a fuller speedboat schedule in the November–April high season and a thinner, demand-based longtail service the rest of the year. Kantang Pier and Kuan Tung Ku offer additional, less frequent connections.

Do I need my own transport to live in Trang?

For the town centre itself, songthaews, motorbike taxis and walking cover daily errands. But since Trang's beaches, the Emerald Cave and the outlying islands all sit well outside town, most residents rent or buy a motorbike or car for regular access to them.
