Overview

How Phuket's areas are organised

Phuket is an island, so where to live comes down to coast and pace rather than a single centre. BAANLYY groups the 15 areas it maps into three zones: West Coast Beaches — the tourist-famous run from Patong down through Karon, Kata, Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao and Nai Harn; North Phuket (Airport & Thalang) — Cherng Talay, Mai Khao and Nai Yang, the Laguna hinterland and quiet northern beaches nearest Phuket International Airport; and Phuket Town, South & East — Phuket Town's Old Town streets plus Rawai, Chalong, Cape Panwa and Koh Kaew, the island's boat-culture and inland family neighbourhoods. Every area links through to a full guide with rent ranges, transport, beaches, schools, hospitals and lifestyle.

FAQ

Phuket areas FAQ

Which area of Phuket is best for expats and digital nomads?

Patong suits short-stayers and anyone who wants nightlife and the widest rental stock within walking distance. Rawai, Chalong and Cape Panwa suit remote workers and long-stayers wanting calmer, boat-and-café living in the south. Bang Tao, Surin and Cherng Talay suit those wanting an upscale, resort-style base near the Laguna complex and international schools.

What's the cheapest area to rent in Phuket?

Phuket Town and Chalong have the island's lowest rents, typically 12,000–25,000 THB a month for a studio or one-bedroom, followed by Koh Kaew, Rawai and Nai Yang for anyone wanting to stay off the tourist beaches while still being close to them.

Which Phuket area is best for families?

Cherng Talay and Bang Tao are the top family picks — international schools, golf and the gated villages around Laguna. Chalong and Rawai add quieter, more local family living in the south, while Kamala offers a smaller, calmer beach community than Patong.

Do I need a car or scooter to get around Phuket?

Yes, in almost every area — there is no rail on the island, so Grab, taxis, songthaews and a scooter or car cover daily life. Only Patong is genuinely walkable for beach, dining and nightlife; everywhere else, from Bang Tao to Rawai, expects renters to have their own transport.
