Overview

The short version

Krabi is southern Thailand's value play — a dramatic Andaman coast of limestone karsts, mangroves and islands that costs noticeably less than Phuket or Koh Samui to call home. Eat local, ride a scooter and rent in a value area and a single person lives well on THB 30,000–52,000 a month; a couple on THB 55,000–95,000; a family of four on THB 110,000–230,000 once a pool villa, a car and schooling enter the picture. Rent is the biggest lever, schooling the biggest swing — and limitation — for families, and the May–October Andaman monsoon the main seasonal factor. Everything below is a current guide range — for live rent by area and development, use the BAANLYY Krabi hub.

01

Rent & villas — monthly, by area tier

Krabi is above all a house-and-villa market, but furnished apartments cluster around Ao Nang and Krabi Town, with resort-grade rentals on the Klong Muang–Tubkaak strip and a relaxed long-stay scene on Koh Lanta. Krabi Town and inland Nong Thale go lower; beachfront villas go far higher. Prices are monthly rent in THB.

Food & groceries

Café latte / specialty coffeeTHB 60–130
Beer in a beach bar (large)THB 90–200
Monthly groceries, couple (local + imported)THB 8,000–15,000

Krabi's fresh markets and street food are excellent and cheap — a market meal costs less than a flat white in Ao Nang. The bill climbs with Western restaurants and imported groceries, but with fewer beach clubs than Phuket or Samui, everyday eating in Krabi stays among the most affordable on the coast.

Utilities, internet & lifestyle

ItemTypical cost / month

Pool & garden upkeep (villa), per monthTHB 3,000–7,000
Gym membershipTHB 900–2,500
Co-working hot desk, monthlyTHB 2,500–5,000

Villa renters should budget for pool and garden upkeep, which is often separate from rent. Electricity climbs fast with constant AC in the hot months, and fibre internet is reliable in Ao Nang, Krabi Town and on Koh Lanta — worth confirming speeds for remote work before you sign.

05

Healthcare, insurance & schools

A private GP visit runs about THB 500–1,100, and Krabi's care covers routine and many urgent needs through the public Krabi Hospital and the private Krabi Nakharin International Hospital, both with English-speaking staff. For complex or specialist treatment, residents often travel to Phuket's large international hospitals, two to three hours away, or to Bangkok. Comprehensive expat health insurance typically costs THB 35,000–110,000 a year depending on age and cover, and some long-stay visas require a minimum level of cover. The bigger gap for families is schooling: Krabi has far fewer international schools than Phuket or Bangkok, so many relocating families choose a Phuket-based school, a smaller local option or homeschooling — research and budget for this early. See the full Krabi healthcare guide.

06

Good to know: value, supply & seasons

Krabi's budget story is value with a couple of catches. Because its main towns are on the mainland rather than an island, everyday costs run below Phuket and Samui — but rental supply is thinner and more seasonal, so securing a long lease before the November–April high season pays off, and the best villas get snapped up early. The seasonal factor is the Andaman monsoon: roughly May to October brings the heaviest rain and quieter beaches (and lower rents), while the November–April dry season is peak demand and pricing. Note that Koh Lanta, being an island, carries a mild price premium of its own. Lean on local food, a scooter and a value area to keep Krabi as affordable as it can be.

FAQ

Krabi cost-of-living questions

How much does it cost to live in Krabi per month?

A solo digital nomad living comfortably in or around Ao Nang typically spends THB 30,000–52,000 (about USD 830–1,450) a month, a couple THB 55,000–95,000, and a family of four THB 110,000–230,000 once a pool villa, a car and schooling are included. Krabi is one of Thailand's better-value coastal bases — generally cheaper than Phuket or Koh Samui — with rent and, for families, schooling the biggest variables.

Is Krabi expensive to live in?

Krabi is on the lower side for Thailand's beach destinations. Long-term rent and everyday costs sit below Phuket and Koh Samui, and well below Bangkok, because Krabi's mainland towns (Ao Nang, Krabi Town) aren't an island and supply is more local. The trade-off is thinner rental stock, fewer condos and limited international schooling. Eat local, ride a scooter and rent in Krabi Town or inland Nong Thale and Krabi is very affordable.

How much is rent for an apartment or villa in Krabi?

A modern one-bedroom runs roughly THB 6,000–12,000 a month in value areas like Krabi Town, THB 12,000–22,000 in Ao Nang and on Koh Lanta, and THB 18,000–35,000 in premium sea-view or resort-strip locations around Klong Muang and Tubkaak. Krabi is largely a house-and-villa market: pool villas start around THB 25,000 and rise past THB 90,000 for larger or beachfront homes. Each BAANLYY Krabi area page lists current ranges.

Do I need a scooter or car in Krabi?

Krabi has no rail or metro and ride-hailing supply is thinner than in Phuket or Samui, so most residents rent a scooter (about THB 2,200–3,800 a month) for day-to-day freedom. Songthaew shared pick-ups loop Ao Nang and run to Krabi Town cheaply, and longtail boats are the only way in and out of Railay. Families and those near Klong Muang or Nong Thale usually need a car (roughly THB 11,000–18,000 a month to rent). Transport is a genuine budget line.

What about schools and healthcare for a family in Krabi?

Healthcare is solid for routine needs — Krabi Hospital (public) and Krabi Nakharin International Hospital (private) handle most cases with English-speaking staff — but complex or specialist care often means travelling to Phuket's large international hospitals, two to three hours away, or to Bangkok. International schooling is the bigger limitation: Krabi has far fewer options than Phuket or Bangkok, so relocating families should research schooling early and budget for a Phuket-based school, smaller local options or homeschooling. Build both into your plan before you move.
