In Thailand, e-commerce is woven into daily life. Two apps — Lazada and Shopee — dominate, between them selling everything from phone chargers and air-fryers to full sets of condo furniture, often cheaper than the mall and delivered to your lobby in a couple of days. For a new arrival they are one of the fastest ways to get a home up and running.

01

The two giants: Lazada vs Shopee

Shopee is the more playful of the two — a feed of flash sales, collectible coins, spin-the-wheel coupons and free-shipping vouchers that reward people who enjoy hunting for the lowest price. Lazada feels a touch more streamlined and leans on LazMall, its section of official brand stores where authenticity is guaranteed — reassuring for electronics, cosmetics and anything counterfeitable. The honest answer to “which is better?” is both: the identical product is frequently a different price on each, so most residents keep the two installed and compare before buying anything substantial. Both run in English, both deliver nationwide, and both protect your payment until the parcel arrives.

02

Setting up an account

You sign up with a mobile number — a Thai SIM makes OTP codes and delivery calls far easier, though a foreign number can work to start. Switch the app language to English in settings, then add your delivery address carefully: include your tower/condo name, building and unit number, the road (soi), district and postcode, and drop an accurate map pin. The first time, it is worth having your condo staff or a Thai speaker check the address formatting — couriers navigate by it, and a clear pin plus your phone number prevents almost all failed deliveries.

03

Paying: card, COD, PromptPay & wallets

You have options. Cash on delivery (COD) lets you pay the courier in cash on arrival and is ideal before you have a local bank — keep the right amount ready and check the box where you can. You can also link a foreign or Thai card, pay via PromptPay, or top up the in-app wallets (ShopeePay and Lazada Wallet), which often unlock extra discounts and make refunds instant. Once you have opened a Thai bank account, most people move off COD because prepaid orders qualify for more vouchers and faster service.

04

Delivery, tracking & pickup points

Items shipped from inside Thailand typically arrive in 1–4 days in Bangkok and major cities, a little longer to islands and remote provinces; the listing usually shows an estimate before you buy. Both apps track the parcel in real time and notify you on dispatch and arrival. If you are often out, you can route deliveries to a pickup point or locker, or simply have parcels left with your condo’s reception or the 7-Eleven downstairs. Watch the dispatch location: cross-border items from China are cheaper but can take one to three weeks.

05

Returns & refunds

Both platforms run real buyer protection. If an item arrives wrong, damaged, fake or not as described, you open a return/refund request in the app within the stated window (commonly 7–15 days, shown on the listing), upload photos, and the platform holds the seller’s money until it is resolved. Film a quick unboxing of anything valuable and keep the packaging. The single most important rule: keep everything inside the app. A seller offering to “refund you directly” by bank transfer is a red flag that voids your protection.

06

Scams & shopping safely

Used sensibly, both apps are safe — but a few traps catch newcomers. Be wary of prices that look too good to be true and brand-new sellers with no reviews; favour official stores (LazMall / Shopee Mall) for branded electronics and cosmetics. Never let a seller move you off-platform to LINE or a direct bank transfer, never share card details outside the official checkout, and ignore “you’ve won a prize, pay the shipping” messages. Counterfeits exist, so read recent reviews and check the seller rating. For the wider picture of fraud in Thailand, see our guide to common scams in Thailand.

07

Sale days, vouchers & furnishing a home

Thailand goes all-in on the “double-digit” sale dates — 11.11, 12.12, 9.9 and monthly pay-day sales — when prices drop and free-shipping vouchers multiply. If your purchase is not urgent, timing it to one of these can save real money, especially on electronics and appliances. Both apps also have grocery and daily-essentials arms. For new arrivals, Lazada and Shopee are the backbone of furnishing a condo on a budget — mattresses, kitchenware, fans and storage all arrive at the door. Pair them with the food-delivery apps and a surprising amount of daily life never requires leaving home.

Frequently asked

Is Lazada or Shopee better in Thailand? Both are excellent and most residents install both. Shopee tends to win on price, vouchers and free-shipping deals, with a more game-like app full of coins, flash sales and coupons — great if you enjoy hunting for the best deal. Lazada feels slightly more streamlined and is strong on official brand stores (LazMall) where authenticity is guaranteed, which matters for electronics and cosmetics. In practice people open whichever has the item cheaper or the better voucher that day. Prices and delivery for the exact same product often differ between the two, so it is worth checking both before you buy anything more than a few hundred baht.
Can I use Lazada and Shopee without speaking Thai?Mostly yes. Both apps offer an English interface and the checkout flow is visual and self-explanatory. The catch is that product listings, titles and seller chat are very often in Thai only, so you lean on photos, the translate button, specifications and reviews. For anything where details matter — sizing, voltage, compatibility — paste the Thai text into a translator or message the seller (their replies translate reasonably well). Your delivery address is the one place worth getting a Thai speaker or your condo staff to help format correctly the first time.
Can I pay cash on delivery in Thailand?Yes — cash on delivery (COD) is widely offered on both Shopee and Lazada and is popular with newcomers who do not yet have a Thai bank account or card. You pay the courier in cash when the parcel arrives. Have the correct amount ready, inspect the box before paying where the option exists, and note that some sellers, vouchers or high-value items are prepaid only. Once you have a Thai account, most people switch to card, PromptPay or the in-app wallets (ShopeePay, Lazada Wallet) because they unlock more discounts and faster refunds.
How long does delivery take in Thailand? For items shipped from within Thailand, expect roughly 1–4 days in Bangkok and major cities, a little longer to islands and remote provinces. Listings increasingly show a delivery estimate before you buy. Both platforms also sell cross-border items shipped from China and elsewhere; those are usually cheaper but can take one to three weeks, so always check the dispatch location and estimated arrival on the listing if you need something quickly.
Can I return items or get a refund?Yes. Both Shopee and Lazada run buyer-protection systems: you can open a return/refund request within a set window (commonly 7–15 days, shown on the listing) for items that are wrong, damaged, fake or not as described. You request it in-app, upload photos, and the platform holds the seller's payment until it is resolved. Keep the packaging and unboxing photos. The key rule is to keep everything inside the app — never accept a seller's offer to refund you off-platform, as that voids your protection.
Is it safe to shop on Lazada and Shopee?Generally yes, provided you stay on-platform. The real risks are fake or wildly underpriced listings, sellers asking you to pay or chat outside the app (LINE, bank transfer), and counterfeit goods. Protect yourself by buying from official stores (LazMall / Shopee Mall) for branded electronics and cosmetics, reading recent reviews and the seller rating, paying only through the app, and never sending money or sharing card details outside the official checkout. Done that way, both platforms are safe enough that millions of Thais and expats shop on them daily.
