What it is & why it matters

Connectivity is one of the easiest parts of settling in. Thailand has fast, inexpensive mobile data from three main carriers — AIS, TrueMove and (the dtac network, now merged with True) — and home fibre that's cheap and installed within days. Grab a tourist SIM at the airport to get going, then switch to a monthly plan once you're settled and have a Thai address. The one non-negotiable: install LINE immediately. It's the default messaging app for everything in Thailand — friends, landlords, condo offices, food delivery and even businesses all run on LINE.

Step by step

  1. Buy a tourist SIM at the airport on arrival (bring your passport — SIM registration is required) so you have data immediately.
  2. Once settled, switch to a monthly postpaid or prepaid plan from AIS or True for better value.
  3. Choose a home-fibre provider — AIS Fibre, True or 3BB are the main options — and book installation.
  4. Have your passport and address ready for fibre installation; it's often completed within a few days.
  5. Install LINE first, then Grab (rides and food) and your bank's app — these three run daily life.
  6. Set up PromptPay once your bank account is open to pay by QR code almost anywhere.

What it costs

Mobile plans are cheap — unlimited or generous-data monthly plans commonly run a few hundred baht. Home fibre is typically around ฿500–฿900 per month depending on speed and provider, usually with quick, low-cost installation. Tourist SIMs at the airport carry a small premium for convenience.
