Buriram is an unusual mix for a small Isaan provincial capital: a thousand years of Khmer temple history sitting alongside one of Thailand's most modern sports economies. Phanom Rung -- Thailand's largest and best-preserved Khmer sanctuary -- anchors the historical side, while Buriram United's Chang Arena and the FIA Grade 1 Chang International Circuit have turned the city into a genuine motorsport and football destination since the early 2010s. Two extinct volcanoes you can actually climb, a smaller sister temple, and a lively weekend night market round out a trip that rewards a car or motorbike and a couple of days.

Temples & natural sights

Phanom Rung Historical ParkCulture

The largest and best-preserved Khmer Hindu sanctuary in Thailand, built between the 11th and 12th centuries atop an extinct volcano roughly an hour's drive southeast of Buriram city. Four times a year, sunlight aligns directly through all 15 of its doorways -- sunrise around 3-5 April and 7-9 September, sunset around 5-7 March and 5-7 October (dates shift slightly year to year, so confirm before planning a trip around it). Open daily 6am-6pm; entry runs ฿100 for foreigners (or ฿150 on a combined ticket with Prasat Muang Tam), ฿20/30 for Thai visitors. The annual Phanom Rung Festival, usually timed to the April sunrise alignment, adds extended night hours and a light-and-sound show.

Prasat Muang TamCulture

A smaller, wonderfully restored Baphuon-period Khmer temple roughly 8km southeast of Phanom Rung, built in the late 10th to early 11th century -- predating its more famous neighbour by decades. Major restoration ran 1984-1995 before it reopened to the public. Most visitors pair it with Phanom Rung on the same trip; open daily 6am-6pm, with foreigner entry around ฿30 standalone or bundled into Phanom Rung's ฿150 combined ticket.

Khao Kradong Forest ParkNature

An extinct volcano roughly 6km outside Buriram city, its crater dated to somewhere between 300,000 and 900,000 years old. Climb the 297-step Nakkharat staircase (built 1969) or drive up to reach the summit's Phra Suphatthara Bophit Buddha image and a suspension bridge spanning the water-filled crater, with views back over the city. Free entry, with vehicle road access 8am-6pm; the site hosts the Khao Kradong Festival on the full moon of the 5th lunar month (around April) and the Buriram Volcano Festival between Christmas and New Year.

Wat Khao AngkhanCulture

A little-visited temple on top of another of the area's extinct volcanoes, with origins dating to the 8th-9th century Dvaravati period and buildings that mix Dvaravati, Khmer, Chinese, Thai and Sri Lankan architectural styles around a striking red-brick pagoda. A small reservoir fills part of the old caldera below the temple, landscaped with rest shelters and, in the dry season, visiting waterfowl.

Sport, motorsport & markets

Chang International CircuitMotorsport

An FIA Grade 1-certified, Formula One-capable race track that opened in 2014 and has hosted the MotoGP Thailand Grand Prix annually since 2018 (with a pandemic-era pause), turning Buriram into one of Southeast Asia's few genuine motorsport destinations. It sits within the wider Chang Sports Complex alongside Chang Arena. Check the current-year race calendar before planning a visit -- event weekends fill the city's hotels and can slow local traffic and mobile networks.

Buriram United & Chang ArenaFootball

Chang Arena is a 32,600-seat stadium that opened in 2011, home to Buriram United -- one of Thai League's most successful and best-supported clubs, with a roofline that echoes local temple silhouettes. Thai League matches typically run February to November; tickets start around ฿300 and can be bought via 7-Eleven Counter Service, official online platforms, or the stadium box office on match day. The club also runs guided stadium tours on non-match days.

Buriram Walking StreetMarket

A Saturday and Sunday evening street market on Rom Buri Road next to the old town moat, known locally as "Sro Ground" or the River Market. Roughly a hundred stalls sell clothes, footwear, inexpensive jewellery and glassware, with about half turning over Thai street food, plus a stage with live music. Runs 5pm-10pm both nights.

Planning your visit

Getting to the sightsPractical

Buriram city has no meaningful public transit to its main attractions -- Phanom Rung is roughly an hour's drive southeast, Khao Kradong about 6km out, and Wat Khao Angkhan further still. A rental car or motorbike, a hired driver, or an organised day tour is the realistic way to see them; Buriram Airport (BFV) sits about 30km from downtown with no direct public transport, and the railway station is a roughly 15-minute walk from the city centre.

Best time to visitPractical

The cool, dry season from November to February brings the most comfortable temperatures for climbing Khao Kradong's steps or walking Phanom Rung's grounds. Layer in the city's event calendar -- MotoGP weekends at the Chang International Circuit and Buriram United's home matches (February-November) -- since both spike hotel demand and local traffic well beyond a typical weekend.

Being honest about the border situationGood to know

Buriram province borders Cambodia, and its southern border districts have seen real, serious conflict as recently as December 2025, with a ceasefire signed 27 December 2025 that has broadly held since. That situation is specific to those southern border districts, not Buriram city or Phanom Rung -- both sit well inland -- but it's worth reading honestly rather than assuming it's fully resolved. See our full Buriram safety guide and check current government travel advisories before finalising any trip that goes near the border itself.

FAQ

Things to do in Buriram FAQ

What are the best things to do in Buriram?

Start with Phanom Rung Historical Park, Thailand's largest and best-preserved Khmer temple, paired with the smaller Prasat Muang Tam 8km away. In the city itself, climb Khao Kradong's extinct-volcano staircase to its summit Buddha, catch a Buriram United match or a stadium tour at Chang Arena, and browse the Saturday/Sunday Walking Street on Rom Buri Road.

Is Phanom Rung worth visiting?

Yes -- it's widely considered the finest Khmer sanctuary in Thailand, built atop an extinct volcano in the 11th-12th century. If you can time a visit to early April or early September (sunrise) or early March or early October (sunset), you may catch the rare alignment where sunlight passes directly through all 15 of its doorways, though exact dates shift slightly year to year.

How do you get around Buriram's attractions?

There's no meaningful public transit to Phanom Rung, Khao Kradong or Wat Khao Angkhan, so most visitors rent a car or motorbike, hire a driver, or book an organised day tour. Buriram Airport (BFV) is about 30km from the city with no direct public transport link, and the train station is a short walk from downtown.

When is the best time to visit Buriram?

November through February brings the coolest, most comfortable weather for outdoor sights like Khao Kradong and Phanom Rung. Also check the MotoGP Thailand Grand Prix calendar at the Chang International Circuit and Buriram United's home match schedule (roughly February-November) -- both draw crowds and are worth planning around, whether to join in or avoid the peak demand.

Is Buriram safe to visit given the Cambodia border situation?

Buriram city and Phanom Rung sit well inland and are not part of the affected area. The real, serious conflict has been confined to the province's southern border districts, most recently in December 2025, with a ceasefire in place since 27 December 2025. It's a genuine, evolving situation worth checking current government travel advisories on if your plans go anywhere near the border -- see our full Buriram safety guide for the honest detail.
