Rents are broad indicative monthly ranges in Thai baht for a furnished unit in popular areas — orientation only, not quotes. Cost, healthcare and school notes are qualitative and mirror each city's guide. Verify current prices and details locally before you commit.
The budget-and-community champion: lowest costs, the biggest remote-work scene, mountains and temples. The trade-offs are no beach and the burning-season air from roughly February to April.
A calm, royal seaside town and a longtime retiree favourite — an easy drive from Bangkok, moderate rents, golf and beaches, with a quieter scene than Phuket or Pattaya.
Dramatic Andaman scenery and laid-back, low-cost living for those who want nature over nightlife. Healthcare, international schools and direct flights are more limited, with Phuket the nearest big hub.
Beach plus big-city amenities under two hours from Bangkok, with moderate rents and a large, established expat community — busier and less polished than the islands.
Genuine island life with strong beaches and a relaxed pace, decent private healthcare and an airport on the island. Rents run high and the choice of homes is narrower than on the mainland.
The default for big-city living: BTS/MRT at your door, the deepest job, food and nightlife scene, the country's best hospitals and international schools — at Thailand's highest, though still sub-Western, rents.
Thailand's most developed island — beaches, villas and resort living with good private healthcare and international schools, but the priciest rents outside Bangkok, and you'll want a car or scooter.
