Hat Yai has no BTS or MRT, so a scooter is a common way to cover ground beyond the compact, walkable city centre. Hat Yai is less touristy than Phuket or Samui, so there are fewer rental shops overall — many locals and long-term expats simply own their own bike — but several genuine, named operators serve visitors and short-term residents. Below are those real shops, what a scooter actually costs, what the law requires, and how to ride Hat Yai's roads and border routes safely.

01

Which scooter to rent

Hat Yai has no BTS or MRT, so a scooter (or Grab/songthaew) is how most people cover ground beyond the compact, walkable centre around Lee Gardens and Central Festival. A 110-125cc automatic (Honda Click, Honda Scoopy) is cheap and easy for flat city riding. If you're planning day trips toward the Sadao or Padang Besar border crossings into Malaysia, or out to Songkhla and Samila Beach, a 150cc+ automatic handles the longer distance more comfortably.

02

What it costs

Rates in Hat Yai are in line with the rest of provincial Thailand and cheaper than the tourist islands. A 110-125cc automatic typically runs THB 150-250 a day, with lower per-day rates for weekly or monthly hire — several shops above offer monthly plans as standard. Bigger bikes from PG Shop or Marqil cost more, priced per model. Always ask for the monthly rate up front if you are staying a while.

03

Licence & International Driving Permit

To ride legally in Thailand you need a Thai motorcycle licence, or your home licence together with a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) specifically endorsed for motorcycles — a car-only IDP does not cover a scooter. Many small Hat Yai shops rent to anyone with a passport and never check, but riding unlicensed is illegal, draws fines at checkpoints, and can void your travel insurance and medical cover after a crash.

04

Helmet law, checkpoints & fines

Helmets are legally required for both rider and passenger in Thailand, and Hat Yai police run periodic checkpoints, including on routes toward the Sadao and Padang Besar border crossings. Typical stops are for no helmet, no licence or IDP, and no motorcycle endorsement. On-the-spot fines are usually a few hundred baht, but the real risk is a crash while unlicensed or helmetless, which routinely voids insurance and leaves you covering Thai hospital bills yourself.

05

Insurance, deposits & the passport warning

Never leave your passport as a deposit. It is the single most important rule of renting a scooter anywhere in Thailand — a held passport has occasionally been used to pressure renters over minor or pre-existing damage. Several Hat Yai shops, including Salan, already work on a cash-deposit-only basis without holding the passport, which is the standard to look for. On insurance, Thai rental bikes typically carry only compulsory third-party cover that pays very little, so you are personally liable for damage — photograph the bike thoroughly before riding off and note every existing scratch on the contract.

06

Riding Hat Yai's roads safely

Hat Yai's city centre is compact and manageable, but conditions change on longer trips: routes toward the Sadao and Padang Besar border crossings (roughly an hour by road) carry more truck traffic, and Songkhla town and Samila Beach are a straightforward but faster country road away. Residents sometimes ask about the southern Thailand insurgency; that conflict is concentrated in Thailand's three southernmost provinces and rarely affects Hat Yai or Songkhla directly, but ordinary road safety — scooters and city traffic — is the more relevant daily risk. Ride defensively, keep to a sensible pace on unfamiliar roads, and take extra care during the rainy season.

Other real named options include MY Motorbike Rental Hatyai (102 Chotiwit Road), Rent-A-Ride Hatyai/Songkhla (near Kho Hong), PG Shop Hatyai Motor Rental and Marqil Motorbike Rental. Hat Yai is less touristy than Phuket or Samui, so there are fewer rental shops overall — locals and long-term expats often own their own bikes.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Hat Yai?

A 110-125cc automatic typically runs THB 150-250 a day, with better rates for weekly or monthly hire — ask each shop for their current monthly plan if you're staying a while. Bigger bikes cost more and are priced per model.

Do I need a licence to rent a motorbike in Hat Yai?

Legally, yes. You need a Thai motorcycle licence, or your home licence plus an International Driving Permit endorsed specifically for motorcycles — a car-only IDP does not cover a scooter. Many small shops rent without checking, but riding unlicensed means fines at checkpoints and can void your travel insurance and medical cover if you crash.

Should I leave my passport as a deposit for a scooter in Hat Yai?

No — never leave your passport as a deposit. Several Hat Yai shops, including Salan Motorbike Rental, already operate on a cash-deposit-only basis without holding the passport. Favour operators that work this way.

Is it safe to ride a motorbike around Hat Yai?

The compact city centre is manageable for a careful rider. Routes toward the Sadao and Padang Besar border crossings carry more truck traffic. Southern Thailand's insurgency is concentrated in the three southernmost provinces and rarely affects Hat Yai or Songkhla directly — ordinary road and traffic safety is the more realistic day-to-day risk.
