Koh Chang shops on an island scale, not a mall scale - and that turns out to be more workable than it sounds. There's no department store or IKEA, but Big C, Lotus's Fresh, Makro Food and a wide spread of 7-Elevens cover everyday groceries better than most islands this size, the nightly White Sand Beach market is a genuine draw in its own right, and Klong Prao, Kai Bae, Bang Bao and Salakphet each run their own smaller, more local markets. Here is how residents actually shop: the supermarkets and the mainland run, the markets worth building an evening around, and the practical business of furnishing a rental and finding imported groceries on a mid-sized island economy.

Supermarkets, convenience stores & the mainland run

No mall, no IKEA - but real supermarketsReality check

Koh Chang has no shopping mall, department store or big-box furniture chain of its own. What it does have is a genuine spread of supermarkets: Big C is based in Pearl Beach, Makro Food sits at the southern end of White Sand Beach, Lotus's Fresh has branches in Klong Prao, Kai Bae and Klong Son, and Mini Big C outlets are in Klong Son and White Sand Beach. It is more grocery coverage than most Thai islands this size get, just without the mainland-style mall experience.

7-Eleven, V-Mart & everyday convenienceEveryday

7-Elevens are dotted along the west coast from White Sand Beach through Chai Chet, Klong Prao, Kai Bae, Klong Son and down to Bang Bao and Salak Phet, covering basics, snacks and late-night essentials at fixed, mainland-similar prices. V-Mart in Chai Chet (north Klong Prao) is a well-stocked local supermarket for cereals, toiletries and household goods, and CJ Mart - a newer convenience chain - has been expanding across the island since 2025.

Western groceries & imported goodsLimited but present

Foodland (underneath Top Resort in White Sand Beach) and Anna Store (further up the hill, same beach) are the best-stocked spots for Western foodstuffs, with Sing Thong in southern Klong Prao another solid option for pantry basics. Alcohol selection is decent for an island: Anna Store and Sing Thong carry a wide range, and dedicated shops like Wine Gallery in Kai Bae and Wine Fans in White Sand Beach focus specifically on wine.

Furnishing a rental & the mainland runSetting up

There is no confirmed HomePro, Global House or IKEA-style furniture superstore on Koh Chang or in Trat town itself, so furnishing a rental works differently than on Phuket or Samui. Most long-term rentals come at least part-furnished. For anything extra, residents order online through Lazada or Shopee (delivery does reach the island), buy secondhand via Facebook expat groups, or make the same longer supply run to Pattaya or Bangkok (roughly 4-5 hours) that covers Koh Chang's bigger legal, medical and self-storage needs.

Markets - night, village & seafood

White Sand Beach Night MarketNightly

The island's best-known market: every evening from around 5pm to 10:30pm, a stretch of roadside through the centre of White Sand Beach turns into a food-and-shopping strip, with vendors grilling meats and seafood, selling fruit and Thai street-food classics, and a scattering of clothing and souvenir stalls alongside. It is the default evening activity for most visitors and residents on this beach.

Klong Prao MarketLocals' market

Running Monday to Saturday from roughly 4pm to 9pm near Zhong Zi Pad Pad, this is one of the more local markets on the island - fresh produce, prepared meals and household goods aimed at residents rather than tourists. It is a genuine spot to shop and eat cheaply away from the more polished tourist strips.

Kai Bae Village MarketSmall & atmospheric

A smaller, quieter evening market in Kai Bae village, open daily roughly 5pm to 11pm and busiest Thursday to Sunday. Expect local fruit, vegetables and snacks - a good pick if you're staying somewhere with cooking facilities or just want an unhurried browse without White Sand Beach's crowds.

Bang Bao Fisherman's VillageSeafood & crafts

Built on stilts over the water at the island's southern tip, Bang Bao mixes a working fishing pier with seafood restaurants, souvenir stalls and local crafts. It's a market experience as much about the setting as the shopping - worth combining with a sunset dinner.

Salakphet Seafood MarketFreshest catch

Salakphet, on the quieter east coast, is a genuine fishing village where the day's catch is sold fresh and can often be cooked to order at nearby restaurants. It's the place to go for seafood rather than souvenirs, and sees far fewer tourists than the west-coast beaches.

Lonely Beach Walking Street & Siam Royal View marketNightlife & expat

Lonely Beach's walking street leans into nightlife - street food, drinks and live music alongside the shopping. On the other end of the spectrum, the weekly market inside the Siam Royal View housing development is open to the public and offers food vendors, handicrafts and occasional live music, giving a glimpse of the island's smaller expat and long-stay community.

Souvenirs, clothes & seasonal reality

Souvenirs, gifts & tailorsGifts

White Sand Beach has the pick of craft shops - Peace Moon for handmade jewellery and leathercraft, Chujai for handicrafts and coffee - while Kai Bae has Nagaraja, Made by Saloly and Clean Beans for clothes and knick-knacks. Near the bridge before Salak Phet, a small shop sells souvenirs made entirely from coconut. Nepalese tailors work on most major beaches for a made-to-measure suit or dress.

Clothes, fakes & the customs caveatBuyer beware

Beachwear, shorts and t-shirts are sold everywhere, and bargaining is normal at stalls and with beach vendors (fixed prices apply in supermarkets and most fixed shops). Copies of Ray-Ban sunglasses, designer bags and similar branded goods are widely sold at prices that make clear they're not genuine - buying them carries a real risk of confiscation and fines at customs when travelling home, so factor that in before treating them as bargains.

Low season & closuresSeasonal reality

Like the rest of Thailand's eastern islands, Koh Chang's night markets and smaller stalls thin out noticeably during the May-October low season when tourist numbers drop. If you're moving here outside the November-April peak, expect a quieter retail scene and plan grocery and market visits with that in mind.

Where to shop by areaAreas

Pearl Beach has Big C for a proper supermarket run; White Sand Beach combines the night market, Makro Food, Foodland and Anna Store; Klong Prao and Kai Bae carry Lotus's Fresh, V-Mart and their own evening markets; Klong Son has a Mini Big C and 7-Eleven cluster; and Bang Bao and Salakphet trade on seafood and craft markets rather than everyday retail.

FAQ

Koh Chang shopping & markets FAQ

Is there a shopping mall on Koh Chang?

No - Koh Chang has no shopping mall, department store or big-box furniture chain. What it has instead is real supermarket coverage: Big C in Pearl Beach, Makro Food in White Sand Beach, Lotus's Fresh across Klong Prao, Kai Bae and Klong Son, plus Mini Big C outlets and a wide spread of 7-Elevens. For the mall experience itself, residents make the longer run to Trat, Pattaya or Bangkok.

What is the best market on Koh Chang?

The White Sand Beach Night Market is the best known - a nightly street-food and shopping strip running roughly 5pm to 10:30pm. For a more local experience, the Klong Prao Market (Mon-Sat evenings) and Kai Bae Village Market (daily, busiest Thu-Sun) sell fresh produce and household goods to residents rather than tourists, while Bang Bao Fisherman's Village and Salakphet Seafood Market are the places to go for the freshest seafood.

Where do you buy groceries and imported food on Koh Chang?

Everyday groceries come from Big C, Lotus's Fresh, Makro Food and the island's many 7-Elevens and V-Mart. For Western and imported goods, Foodland and Anna Store in White Sand Beach and Sing Thong in Klong Prao are the best-stocked options, and Wine Gallery (Kai Bae) or Wine Fans (White Sand Beach) cover a dedicated wine selection. Prices carry the usual island mark-up over the mainland.

How do you furnish a rental on Koh Chang without an IKEA?

Most long-term rentals on Koh Chang come at least part-furnished, which covers most needs. There is no confirmed large furniture retailer on the island or in Trat town itself, so for anything extra residents order online via Lazada or Shopee (delivery reaches the island), buy secondhand through Facebook expat groups, or make the same Pattaya or Bangkok run used for bigger legal, medical and storage needs.
