Things to do in Koh Phangan.

Best known worldwide for the Haad Rin Full Moon Party, Koh Phangan's daily life is calmer and more deliberate — waterfalls and jungle hikes inland, a west-coast yoga and wellness scene, diving at Sail Rock, and a working fishing-village pace on the north coast.

Most visitors know Koh Phangan for one thing — the monthly Full Moon Party at Haad Rin — but that's one beach on one night a month. The rest of the island and the rest of the calendar are built around waterfalls and jungle trails in the mountainous interior, a globally known yoga and wellness corridor on the west coast, quality diving at Sail Rock, and a slower fishing-village rhythm on the north coast. Here's how to fill your days, grouped into nature, active pursuits, and local flavour.

Beaches & nature

Haad Rin & the Full Moon PartyLandmark

Koh Phangan's best-known export: a monthly all-night beach party on Haad Rin's curved sand, timed to the full moon and drawing visitors from across the region. It's one night a month, not a description of daily life on the island — Haad Rin itself is a normal, if dense, beach town the rest of the time, with a quieter Half Moon Festival and Black Moon Party filling out the wider party calendar nearby.

Phaeng Waterfall (Namtok Phaeng National Park)Nature

The island's biggest and most accessible waterfall, inside a small national park in the central highlands. A short, well-marked jungle walk leads to tiered pools that are swimmable after good rain — strongest flow typically falls in the rainy season from roughly September through December, and much thinner in the dry months.

Than Sadet WaterfallNature

A royal-linked waterfall on the island's east coast — Thai kings have historically visited and carved initials into the rocks here. It's a rougher, less-trafficked trip than Phaeng, usually combined with a stop at the nearby Than Sadet National Park beach, and best reached by rented truck or a tour given the rougher roads in.

Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat)Nature

A secluded north-coast cove reachable only by longtail boat from Chaloklum or via a steep jungle hiking trail — no road access keeps it undeveloped. A handful of simple bungalow resorts and beach bars sit right on the sand, making it a popular day-trip-by-boat or an overnight escape from the busier south of the island.

Mae Haad & the Ko Ma sandbarNature

A natural sandbar on the northwest coast connects the mainland at Mae Haad to the small island of Ko Ma, walkable at low tide and one of the island's best snorkeling spots on either side. A relaxed half-day out, easily paired with sunset at one of the beachfront bars nearby.

Wellness, diving & activities

Yoga & wellness in SrithanuWellness

The west coast around Srithanu and neighbouring Haad Salad is one of Southeast Asia's best-known wellness hubs, with a dense concentration of yoga studios, detox and fasting retreats, ecstatic dance nights and raw-food cafes. Drop-in classes and multi-week retreat programs both run year-round, drawing a global long-stay wellness community.

Diving & snorkeling — Sail Rock (Hin Bai)Diving

Sail Rock, roughly midway between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, is regarded as one of the Gulf of Thailand's best dive sites — a submerged granite pinnacle with a vertical swim-through chimney and regular whale shark sightings in season. Dive operators run day trips from both islands; Chaloklum on Koh Phangan's north coast is the closer launch point.

Wat Khao Tahm meditation templeCulture

A hillside meditation temple on the island's south coast, long known internationally for its 10-day silent Vipassana retreats. Even without joining a course, the temple grounds offer a quiet viewpoint over the southern coastline and a contrast to the island's party reputation.

Island-hopping & speedboat day tripsDay trip

Speedboat tour operators run day trips from Koh Phangan's piers to Angthong Marine Park's limestone islands and lagoons, and to neighbouring Koh Tao and Koh Samui for diving, snorkeling or simply a change of island scenery — a practical way to see more of the Gulf without changing accommodation.

Local flavour

Thong Sala Walking StreetLocal flavour

The island's main Saturday-night market takes over central Thong Sala with street food stalls, local produce, clothing and handicrafts — the best single stop for cheap, authentic Thai food and a look at everyday island life away from the beaches.

Sunset at Amsterdam Bar, Haad RinLocal flavour

A cliffside bar above Haad Rin's Sunrise Beach with one of the island's best sunset views over the Gulf of Thailand, popular with both long-stayers and visitors as a calmer alternative to the beach-level party scene below.

Chaloklum's fishing-village paceLocal flavour

The north-coast fishing village of Chaloklum runs on its own working rhythm — boats out at dawn, a small daily market, and some of the freshest, cheapest seafood on the island — and doubles as the launch point for Bottle Beach and Sail Rock diving trips.

FAQ

Things to do in Koh Phangan FAQ

What are the best things to do on Koh Phangan?

Beyond the Full Moon Party at Haad Rin: Phaeng and Than Sadet waterfalls, Bottle Beach by boat from Chaloklum, the Mae Haad/Ko Ma sandbar for snorkeling, yoga and wellness retreats around Srithanu, and diving at Sail Rock. Thong Sala's Saturday Walking Street market is the best stop for local food and everyday island life.

Is Koh Phangan only about the Full Moon Party?

No. The Full Moon Party happens one night a month at Haad Rin. The rest of the island and most of the month are much quieter, built around a well-established wellness and yoga community on the west coast, diving and fishing-village life on the north coast, and waterfalls and jungle hiking inland.

Are the waterfalls on Koh Phangan worth visiting?

Yes, especially in the rainy season from roughly September to December when flow is strongest. Phaeng Waterfall is the easiest to reach with a short, well-marked jungle walk; Than Sadet is rougher and less crowded, with historic royal carvings in the rocks. Both run much lighter in the dry season.

How do I get to Bottle Beach?

Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat) has no road access. The two options are a longtail boat from Chaloklum on the north coast, or a steep jungle hiking trail — both are half-day trips best started in the morning before the heat builds.

Is Koh Phangan good for diving?

Yes — Sail Rock, roughly midway between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, is one of the Gulf of Thailand's best-regarded dive sites, known for its vertical swim-through chimney and seasonal whale shark sightings. Dive shops in Chaloklum and Thong Sala run regular day trips out to it.
