Koh Samui isn't a reef destination in its own right — the island has no fringing coral to speak of — but it has become one of the Gulf of Thailand's busiest dive bases, thanks to its international airport, deep pool of accommodation and fast speedboat access to Sail Rock, Chumphon Pinnacle, Koh Tao and Ang Thong National Marine Park. Four PADI 5-Star centers anchor the island's diving scene, spread across North Chaweng, Bophut and Lamai. For getting around the island and where to base yourself, see the Koh Samui areas guide and Area Score rankings.

FAQ

Koh Samui diving FAQ

Where are Koh Samui's dive shops based?

The island's PADI centers cluster around the north and east coasts: Discovery Divers is at the Amari Koh Samui Resort in North Chaweng, Silent Divers and 100 Degrees East are both based in Bophut (Bang Rak Beach for 100 Degrees East), and Easy Divers runs a dedicated training center with a private pool on Lamai Beach on the east coast.

Where do Koh Samui dive trips actually go?

Samui isn't a reef destination in its own right — operators run speedboats out to the Gulf of Thailand's famous sites, chiefly Sail Rock (a granite pinnacle known for its 'chimney' swim-through and whale shark sightings), Chumphon Pinnacle, Southwest Pinnacle, Koh Tao's reefs, and Ang Thong National Marine Park. Most trips take 60-90 minutes each way by modern speedboat.

How much does diving cost in Koh Samui?

Based on published 2026 rates, a Discover Scuba Diving taster runs roughly THB 5,500-5,850, a PADI Open Water certification course runs about THB 16,700-18,200 depending on operator, and a two-dive day trip to a site like Sail Rock starts around THB 4,650. Exact pricing varies by operator, season and included extras (lunch, equipment, transfers) — confirm directly before booking.

Is Koh Samui or Koh Tao better for diving?

Koh Tao remains Thailand's dedicated dive-training hub with the highest concentration of schools and the most competitive course pricing. Koh Samui is a strong alternative for travelers already staying on the island for its beaches, international airport and infrastructure — several Samui operators run day boats directly to Koh Tao's and Koh Tao-adjacent sites, so divers based in Samui can reach the same waters without relocating.

When is the best time to dive in Koh Samui?

January through April brings the calmest seas and best visibility in the Gulf of Thailand, and is also peak whale-shark season at Sail Rock (with a secondary window in August-September). November, during the northeast monsoon, is generally the month operators flag as toughest for conditions. Confirm current schedules directly, since some operators adjust trips seasonally.
