Overview

The short version

There is no direct Koh Tao airport transfer — the island has no airport, so the trip always combines a flight, train or bus leg with a ferry crossing to Mae Haad pier. Chumphon is the closest gateway and the shortest crossing; Koh Samui and Surat Thani are the other two mainland routes, trading price against journey time. This guide pairs with our Koh Tao safety guide for getting around once you are actually on the island.

01

Why there is no "Koh Tao Airport" — pick your gateway

Koh Tao has never had an airport, so every arrival ends the same way: reach the mainland or a neighbouring island, then finish the journey by ferry to Mae Haad pier. There are three practical gateways — fly or travel overland to Chumphon and take the shortest sea crossing, fly into Koh Samui (USM) and connect by ferry, or fly into Surat Thani (URT) on a budget carrier and take a longer bus-and-ferry combination. Which one makes sense depends on your budget, your flight origin, and whether you would rather pay for speed or save money and add hours.

02

Via Chumphon — the closest gateway

Chumphon sits directly across from Koh Tao and offers the shortest sea crossing of any gateway. You can fly a short domestic hop into Chumphon Airport (CJM) from Bangkok Don Mueang, or skip flying and take an overnight train or bus from Bangkok — both routes end at Chumphon's pier area (Tha Reua Chumphon), where Lomprayah and Seatran run high-speed catamarans to Mae Haad in roughly 1.5-2 hours. A slower overnight car ferry (Songserm) also runs the same route in around 6 hours, cheaper but far longer, and useful if you would rather sleep through the crossing than pay for speed.

03

Via Koh Samui (USM) — the easy mid-priced route

Landing at Samui International Airport (USM) on Bangkok Airways is a comfortable, well-trodden route. From arrivals, a short transfer takes you to Maenam or Bophut pier, where Lomprayah or Songserm high-speed ferries run to Koh Tao in roughly 1.5-2 hours — some sailings stop at Koh Phangan en route, which can add 30-45 minutes. USM fares run higher than a standard domestic airport, so you are paying a premium for reliable schedules and a shorter, calmer crossing than the Surat Thani option.

04

Via Surat Thani (URT) — the budget route

The cheapest way in is usually a low-cost flight (AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion, Thai VietJet) into Surat Thani (URT) on the mainland, followed by a bus-and-ferry combination through-ticket sold at travel-agent desks in the arrivals hall. Routes typically run overland to Chumphon for the short crossing, or via Donsak pier and a longer sea leg through Koh Samui or Koh Phangan first. Either way, budget 5-6 hours door-to-pier — noticeably longer than the Chumphon or Samui routes — in exchange for the lowest combined airfare-plus-transfer cost.

05

Direct ferries from Koh Phangan

If you are already island-hopping or relocating from Koh Phangan, direct boats run from Thong Sala pier to Koh Tao in roughly 1-1.5 hours, making it one of the more convenient short hops in the Gulf. This is a useful option for movers who are scouting multiple islands before settling, or who are transferring between our Koh Phangan and Koh Tao listings.

06

Pre-booked private door-to-door transfers

For a late arrival, heavy moving luggage or simply a calmer first day, travel agents and transfer companies on the Chumphon, Samui and Surat Thani routes sell a single package covering the pickup, the ferry ticket and the songthaew or private car on to your accommodation on Koh Tao. You are met with a name board and the price is fixed in advance — typically THB 1,200-2,000 all-in via Chumphon and somewhat more via Samui or Surat Thani, depending on your final destination on the island. Many Koh Tao dive resorts and long-stay landlords can arrange this for incoming tenants on request.

07

Arriving at Mae Haad pier — what happens next

However you arrive, Mae Haad pier is where the boat leg ends and the island leg begins. Expect a short walk from the boat to a strip of songthaew (shared pickup-truck taxi) drivers and private-transfer pickups waiting outside — there is no fixed queue or ticket booth, so drivers call out destinations and you agree a fare before climbing in. Shared songthaew rides to Sairee Beach or Chalok Baan Kao typically run THB 50-100 per person; a private charter costs more and is common late at night, with heavy luggage, or for the quieter east-coast bays. If you pre-booked a private transfer, your driver will usually be waiting with a name board just outside the pier gate.

08

Grab, Bolt & the on-island leg once you're there

Grab and Bolt operate with reasonable coverage around Koh Samui airport and Surat Thani, so they are a workable way to reach the pier on either gateway. Neither app has meaningful driver coverage on Koh Tao itself, so once you step off the ferry at Mae Haad, ride-hailing is not an option — you are into songthaew and private-transfer territory as described above. Once you are actually living on the island, a rented scooter is the practical everyday choice for most residents; see our Koh Tao safety guide for scooter and road-safety notes before you rent one.

FAQ

Koh Tao airport transfer FAQ

Does Koh Tao have an airport?

No. Koh Tao has no airport of its own. Arrivals fly or travel overland to Chumphon, Koh Samui (USM) or Surat Thani (URT) and connect by ferry, or take a direct boat from Koh Phangan — every route ends with a crossing to Mae Haad pier.

What's the fastest way to get to Koh Tao?

Chumphon offers the shortest sea crossing — around 1.5-2 hours by Lomprayah or Seatran high-speed catamaran. Reached by a short domestic flight into Chumphon Airport (CJM) or an overnight train/bus from Bangkok, this is typically the closest and quickest gateway to the island.

What's the cheapest way to get to Koh Tao from Bangkok?

The budget route is usually flying a low-cost carrier into Surat Thani (URT) and taking a bus-and-ferry through-ticket, or taking an overnight train or bus directly to Chumphon and the slower Songserm night boat — both trade a longer journey (5-6 hours or more) for a lower combined cost.

How do I get from Mae Haad pier to my accommodation?

Shared songthaews (converted pickup trucks) wait outside Mae Haad pier and run to Sairee Beach and Chalok Baan Kao for roughly THB 50-100 per person, agreed before you get in. If you pre-booked a private transfer, your driver will be waiting with a name board just outside the pier gate instead.

Is there Grab on Koh Tao?

Grab and Bolt work reasonably well around Koh Samui airport and Surat Thani, so they can get you to the pier on either gateway. Neither app has meaningful driver coverage on Koh Tao itself, so once you are on the island you rely on songthaews, pre-booked transfers or a rented scooter instead.
