Koh Tao has no malls, department stores or large-scale markets - shopping here is small-island practical, spread across two main villages. Mae Haad, the pier town, has the widest range of everyday shops including the island's closest thing to a department store; Sairee Beach carries the densest dive-shop and boutique scene along its beachfront walking street; and Chalok Baan Kao on the south coast covers the basics for its own quieter community. For anything bigger - a proper supermarket shop, appliances or serious furniture - the standard move is a ferry to Koh Samui. Here is how shopping actually works for residents.

Village shops & where to shop

Mae HaadMain pier & commercial centre

Koh Tao's practical hub - the main pier, banks, the post office and the widest range of everyday shops, all walkable. Chaiwat, on the main road, is the island's closest thing to a department store: an Aladdin's cave of homeware, hardware, furniture, stationery, toiletries and alcohol. Pen Wholesale nearby covers bulk and grocery basics for residents and small businesses.

Sairee BeachLongest beach, north of Mae Haad

The densest cluster of dive shops, restaurants and low-key nightlife on the island, Sairee also carries the best boutique and beachwear shopping - swimwear, dive accessories, sarongs and gift shops line the walking street that runs the length of the beach. Smile Mart, on Hin Wong Bay Road, is the main supermarket serving the Sairee area.

Chalok Baan KaoSouth coast, quieter

The island's second hub has a smaller but sufficient range of minimarts, dive-shop retail and a handful of boutiques serving its bungalow- and resort-heavy community - fine for daily essentials, though residents still make the trip to Mae Haad or Sairee for a bigger shop.

Everyday essentials, dive gear & building supplies

7-Eleven, Family Mart & minimartsEvery village

7-Eleven and Family Mart branches sit in each of the main villages and along the Sairee-to-Mae Haad walking street, making snacks, SIM cards, toiletries and late-night essentials easy to find anywhere on the island. Independent minimarts fill in the gaps between the chain stores.

Fresh produce & Thai street foodMae Haad & Sairee mornings

Fresh produce stalls set up in Mae Haad and Sairee for fruit, vegetables and Thai street snacks - a smaller, more informal version of the day markets found on the mainland, since Koh Tao does not have a large-scale market of its own.

Dive gear, swimwear & beach shopsSairee Beach & Mae Haad

Given the island's identity as a dive destination, dive-gear shops, swimwear boutiques and beach-lifestyle stores are unusually well represented for an island this size - most concentrated on the Sairee walking street and around the Mae Haad pier.

Hardware, furniture & building suppliesLimited, Chaiwat (Mae Haad)

Chaiwat in Mae Haad covers basic hardware, homeware and small furniture items for anyone furnishing a rental or dive-staff room; larger furniture and building materials are far more limited than on the mainland and often shipped in specially by resorts and dive operators.
